  1. QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 08:28 PM) This show is awful What I don't like is how the contestants already been exposed to the questions. It would have been better if they were being judged spontaneously. Even if one were to assume lie-detector tests can be manipulated (which they can), it'd bring much more drama live.
  2. I'd never go on. I know that much. I do like the entire concept behind this show, but how slowly everything is moving is excruciating. This most applies to the contestants answering and the woman narrator thereafter giving the answer.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 23, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) LOL, it's about a couple centimeters tall. Well, shrinking down to a few centimeters was probably necessary for this species to survive a planet without (available) water, oxygen and average temperatures well below -30 degrees.
  4. No one could have predicted this. When I heard Renfro died, I didn't think twice about it. It was almost something you'd expect to happen. However, this is very surprising; since Ledger was both a talented actor and devoid (to my knowledge) of any personal issues. This is definitely be similar to River Phoenix in that people will always think of how much more he could have accomplished.
  5. Whenever I ride the train downtown for school, I always sit within close distance of the emergency exit.
  6. Anyone else believe the new single from Jordan Sparks Ft. Chris Brown "No Air" is a great song? I probably couldn't get away with telling my friends, so I just thought I'd post my thoughts here. ha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfWkzBEtGck
  7. I just watched Idiocracy and absolutely loved it. Great satire film. Hollywood needs more Mike Judge films. "Joe could understand them, but whenever he spoke he sounded pompous.........and f**gy." lol.
  8. I haven't seen either in awhile, but Gillespie Auto Dealers ran several of the most annoying commercials I've ever been witness to. One was where some loud guy was calling himself the "Big-Dog", cropped next to a bulldog. Another had the same character does his stinct, followed by several young girls singing this chorus (it has stuck in my head): "I love my ABCs.....and counting 1-2-3.....- but I'd really like a good deal on a car at Gillespie auto." That doesn't even f***ing rhyme! Additionally, if anyone remembers the commercial it's terribly off-cue and the girls couldn't look less interested. I had to change the commercial out of embarassment whenever either came on.
  9. Without question Billy Koch. I HATED him. It's almost as if he embodied everything wrong with our ballclub. Most notably, failed expectations. And when people would say, "he's a terrible pitcher, but a great guy," it'd make me hate him even more.
  10. Steve, I don't know why you are avoiding strength training. Lifting weights (70% of maximum) with low reps/high sets would assist your weight loss. If nothing else, it compliments any cardiovascular workout. Personally, I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum -- 6'2, 175 and looking to gain weight. You lose weight without strength training and you'll liable to look like me -- little muscle definition. I'm more interesting in toning and eliminating excess body fat (esp. around my face) than creating some muscular physique that'll be difficult to maintain when I'm older.
  11. Thanks for the encouragement and advice, guys. This isn't exactly a topic I'd run by my friends, :lol I gave her the gift earlier today with a card. She talked to me about half an hour ago and sounded very appreciative. I was nervous as hell leading up to this moment, because -- function wise -- all she can really do with a damn ornament is hang it up on a tree or perhaps a wall. This is exactly why shopping for women is so difficult -- they attach emotional status to presents. Atleast more often than men. A simple IPOD (another option of mine) probably would have been fine, but it's not original; or personal. Almost a lazy Christmas present for a girlfriend.
  12. QUOTE(G&T @ Dec 22, 2007 -> 10:36 PM) Back when I was looking for the first Christmas present to give my gf I went with a brooch that was about $50, but I knew she would like it. She still wears it now. In reality, she liked it more because she told me she liked brooches and I remembered that, rather than the dollar amount (she told me that). Same deal here. The price shouldn't matter, but the fact that you knew something about her interests should be enough. If not, then punch her in the head...emotionally. I honestly had no idea what a brooch was prior to reading your post and googling it. She hasn't mentioned anything as specific as brooches, unfortunately. It's sort of difficult to assign an item to represent her Irish heritage, and be appropriate as a gift for Christmas, without being too cheesy or expensive. I thought about buying a necklace but I never see her wearing one. And I made it an issue to stay away from personal items this early in our relationship. What did your girlfriend give you for the first Christmas? I spend time worrying about what she (or others) may find acceptable, but then again, if she's looking for me it has to be equally as difficult.
  13. Even though it doesn't concern me directly, I'd thought I pose a Christmas gift question here for fellow Soxtalkians. I've been officially dating this girl for about a week now, and prior to that have only known her since late October. The dilemma I have grappled with leading up to now is, what exactly should I give her? It's way too soon in our relationship to be spending a lot of money, or giving her personal items (such as perfume or clothing) yet I'm not going to give her nothing. We haven't discussed this topic; for obvious reasons on my end -- it doesn't exactly sound good if I were to ask, "what do you want for christmas?" So, today I'm walking through a store and came upon a gift -- a Christmas ornament/decal which mentions her Irish heritage. It cost roughly $25. She is rather proud of her Irish background, so I'd thought it'd be a thoughful selection. If you were a girl, or are a girl (I'm not forgetting our female members), what would this say about your boyfriend? He's cheap? Considerate? I'm more afraid of her opening it up in front of friends or family and just feeling underwhelmed. Or made fun of. Hell, it may be entirely possible she gives me nothing. It wouldn't bother me, to be honest. Prior to yesterday I was more concerned with the possibility she gives me something and I have nothing in return. I know I rather have something for her -- even if its an ornament -- then nothing. It's the though that counts, right? lol.
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 02:07 PM) Good luck with that happening. Everyone close to the organization, including people in the media, know just how tight mcNamee was with Roger and everyone knows how tight Pettite and Roger are. The stuff in there is pretty damn concrete if you ask me and I'm glad to see Roger finally paying the price. He deserves as much s*** as Barry has gotten over the years. In fact he deserves it times 10 since Barry has had to put up with about 6 years of it by now (deservingly so for the most part). Barry Bonds isn't any different than Rocket....whooo. I still would pay money to see either of them play the game at there prime though Yet, on ESPN I'm hearing people talk about 'unsubstantiated rumors by a man under threat of federal imprisonment.' No one has bothered to mention the close ties both have had with McNamee, either. LET'S WAIT AND SEE WHAT CLEMENS' CAMP HAS TO SAY!!!1
  15. Brian McNamee will be targeted for character assassination since he's only associated with two names, and two big names at that.
  16. Yeah, I was way off in predicting no notable names would be released. Even if a majority of the names are a bunch of scrubs and people we already know took steroids, Clemens alone will keep this in the spotlight for quite awhile. I'm dying to know how ESPN deals with this story. They'll probably say, "STEROIDS WERE WIDESPREAD, CLEMENS JUST DIDN'T USE THEM," or "HE'S STILL A HALL OF FAMER WITHOUT STEROIDS"
  17. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 10:18 PM) We are now the Houston Astros. Their Tejada deal was WIlliams-esque. Short term splash but it won't change the fact that its a mediocre team. Interesting that both of our teams peaked at the same time and we're both terrible and invest our money in big money deals for players in their 30's while we ignore our farm systems Hopefully, if 2008 ends how many of us have envisioned, the similarities between Houston and the White Sox can extend to the job status of general managers. Williams put himself in this mess. No one else. And I don't care whether Reinsdorf has confidence in Williams through the forseeable future. Atleast with a rebuilding project we'd expect hardships. It's almost embarrassing, if the article is to believed, that Williams had enough faith in acquiring Hunter and M.Cabrera that he first picked up O.Cabrera and Linebrick. If anything, of those four players Hunter and M.Cabrera should have been the top priorities. We miss out? Fine. We're not committed to competing in 2008.
  18. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 05:49 PM) I think it will be a colossal waste of time and energy. I'm convinced if any noteworthy names were mentioned, who haven't yet been previously linked to steroids, it would have been leaked by now. I can't believe no one within the Mitchell investigation or MLB would remain quiet if Clemens, for example, were mentioned. A recent Associated Press article suggests All-Stars and MVPs are included, but that doesn't mean much. Just looking at the previous 20 years of MVPs for both leagues I count atleast 8 names I'd associate with steroid use.
  19. Why didn't you, at any point.........MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM BEASTLY!
  20. QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 06:09 AM) lol, cubs sign fukudome to a completely unreasonable contract and mere hours later we are getting the Firesale threads hilarious Cmon, now. You could have created this thread from anytime last May forward and it would have made sense. Many on this website were calling for a fire-sale long before Williams began his offseason of embarrassment.
  21. Konerko/Crede/Broadway for Kotchman/A ball reliever. Pay all of Crede's 2008 salary. Forget about Figgens; Guillen will only abuse him. If Anaheim doesn't buy into the intangibles associated with those two, which they probably wouldn't, forget about it. Only a deal capable of bringing in an immediate (and fairly cheap) option for 1B would work. Someone, afterall, has to field first base if Konerko were to leave. Honestly, there are few other options available. I wouldn't hesitate trading Jenks, but locating a suitable partner is difficult. It has to be a team with atleast one highly touted outfielder within their system, without a capable closer or 'closer in waiting,' and serious enough about competing that they'd consider trading for him.
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 10:32 PM) Twins still have Santana. With him, they're easily better than the Sox are right now. Hopefully they'll trade him and Nathan prior to the year. I much rather they keep both, to be honest. If Nathan or Santana are gone perhaps we'll have a legitimate shot for 3rd place, but Minnesota will just be beginning their rebuilding project -- with legitimate prospects no doubt-- one year sooner.
  23. Unless Williams signs Rowand, he'll be ridiculed beyond belief for his inability to sign notable free agents. The options are dwindling. And no, overpaying for Rowand won't be the difference in our ballclub reaching the playoffs next season. Neither will this hold true for any deal involving a capable CF. The problem here is Williams -- he forced himself into this position talking about "Plan 1A, 2A..." and landing a "big fish." In addition to exchanging Garland for a legitimate trading chip and thereafter signing Linebrick. When you say the words he has said, and follow it up with the aforementioned moves, missing out on free agents doesn't make you look anything but pathetic. I don't care -- hell, I'd rather have Owens than paying someone 10 times his salary -- but I'm not the casual fan reading the paper day after day and wondering what's going on.
  24. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 03:02 PM) Flash tizzle is right. We all need to focus on the negative. This was a terrible team last year, KW is a joke to think we would compete. Its not important what it took to win a world series three years ago. It is important that we are the worst team in baseball. My hats off to greg775 for showing me the light. And the other World Champions since then, or before us? Can't we model ourselves off anyone else, or are the 2005 White Sox to team to which all others are judged? Starting pitching + defense + effective bullpen + timely hitting + luck = championship. There's your model. It's generic and doesn't require the mention of 2005. I don't know how it's possible to ignore the negatives, since no one could possibly have faith for 2008 without throwing in references to past teams (ie, the expects didn't think the 2005 team would be good!!!). I'd like to hear someone explain why they believe the roster, as currently constructed, can make up the 28+ wins necessary to reach the playoffs. Please do this without saying anything about the possibility of career seasons from everyone. Just base arguments on available statistics, and then afterwards, compare those to divisional opponents. And "that's why they play the game" or "we were paper champions in 2006" doesn't work either. It's not as if we're brimming with minor league talent, either. Unless our drafts begin producing a stream of talent, the next several seasons may be dreadful
  25. Can we please stop referencing 2005? I don't mean to ruin striker's thread, but honestly, can everyone please move on? It'll be two and half seasons beginning in April since that fateful night. Quit mentioning it. Yes, it was a tremendous time for all White Sox fans; but the manner in which the team was constructed, divisional opponents, the players itself; everything was different. My Christmas wish is for a language filter to include the numbers "2005." It has to end sometime, right?
