  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 24, 2008 -> 05:15 PM) Hmm, whenever I hear stories about someone being killed by an animal, I usually go back to the same thought. If someone very close to me was killed by an animal, I think I'd probably kill as many of said animal as possible. I know they say you can't take revenge on nature, but I'd give it a shot. I'm a believer in well placed vengeance (haha), but it'd just seem useless to me to hold a grudge against a wild animal that did nothing but be itself. Although it's difficult to say how I'd react, since these type of incidents are probably such a burden to deal with. It's not natural, or common, and can't be easy for family members to accept. You're not going to get an answer from a wild animal, and everyone will just tell you it wasn't doing wrong. Can't exactly get closure from that.
  2. Anyone ever regret watching a video online (specifically graphic in nature) that is so disturbing you can't get out of your head? Earlier today I was interested in the "Battle at Kruger" video and began browsing various link through Google. Suddenly interested in Lions I continued watching similarily themed videos, and through one website there was a side bar listing related clips. Similar to Youtube. One is entitled, "Tourist killed by Lion as family/friends watch." I don't know what compeled me other than morbid curiousity, but I immediately regretted the decision. The short clip chronicled a group of tourists in the early 70's viewing lions inside the confines of their cars, literally, within feet of the animals. Anyone could just step out and touch it. A narrator suggests the video was used in a lawsuit against an insurance company, so you know whatever is forthcoming will be bad. For whatever reason, this man -- with a camera -- exists his car to film a lion laying on the ground. From behind a Lion knocks him over and begins biting. The camera is shakey, understandably, and the clips shown sporadically cut from several lions (with blood visible on the man) attempting to kill this guy, to a shot of his children in the car; his infant child crying in the backseat. Probably due to his older brother and mother screaming. It ends with several lions chomping away on this guy's lifeless corpse. Now, I've seen numerous videos before depicting people dying or being killed, but this one was especially disturbing. I believe what made it so bad, from my perspective, was knowing this guy's family was within plain sight of this attack and nearby friends couldn't do anything about it. I couldn't help but think what happened in the following years. How did the children do growing up without their father? Or the wife, knowing her husband's own stupidity led to his demise? On camera, nonetheless. There's no dignity in that kind of death.
  3. An average fielding RF would have caught that ball. I'm so tired of watching Dye trudge through the outfield.
  4. Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend away from your family and with the chat crew! And forget about friends, since none of you have any. No one has to be alone today! http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?autocom=chat
  5. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 19, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) "The Happening" looks like it's going to be splendid. I read several spoilers and it sounds interesting. From what I recall (and this was several months ago -- perhaps it wasn't accurate), there's no ridiculous "twist" at the end which lessens the impact of the story.
  6. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 19, 2008 -> 06:13 AM) He might not even be a first rounder anymore due to the fact he's out with a stress facture in his shoulder. No way do you take him at 8 now. It's situations like this I'd love to have an additional first round pick. He'll be this years Joe Savery and Andrew Brackman -- good arms with injury issues who dropped quite a bit in value, but were still selected by someone in the latter half of the first 1st round.

  8. QUOTE (flavum @ May 18, 2008 -> 11:44 AM) I think in baseball you try to win no matter what, and let the draft order fall into place. There's no sure thing anyway. The best teams draft the best throughout the first 10-20 rounds, and hope to get a surprise after that. How many of us looked at the end of last season was, everything else equal, which scenario most benefited our future -- losing or winning? Nothing would have changed with three additional losses (I'm sure what happened in the offseason still occurs with a 69 win White Sox team), yet it's possible we could have selected as high as #3, low as #5 in the draft. Selecting #8 isn't bad-- and in fact we're lucky that everything fell our way the last week of the season to fall in the Top 10. At this point it's not much of an issue. It'll be a failure IMO if ANY person drafted after us in the first round eventually becomes a better player than our selection. I don't even care if it's someone such as Poreda with one pitch, or someone who's injured, that wildly exceeds expectations. It's so crucial for the success of our franchise to draft an instant stud. Whether to help our ballclub on the field, or through a trade. There should be jobs on the line this draft. We're not working in the 20's, anymore. If we're overdrafting someone (which shouldn't even be an issue considering the space between our 1st and 2nd pick) or receiving poor recommendations from scouts, then there should be more companions for Dave Wilder and his buddies from Latin America.
  9. 11 hits in 2.2 innings for Wasserman? WOW, that's terrible.
  10. QUOTE (flavum @ May 15, 2008 -> 12:51 PM) I have nothing to base this opinion other than reading scouting reports and watching clips, but I hope the Sox take a college position player. Somebody that could be in the 2010 Opening Day lineup. I've heard a lot about Justin Smoak, but it would be cool if they took Gordon Beckham. A homegrown shortstop would be a refreshing change for the Sox. Plus he'd probably be a prototypical 2-hitter. Eh, maybe it's me being greedy but I'd hope for more out of our first selection, #8 overall, than a protypical #2 hitter. Put it this way -- if everything goes right does his skill set strike you as someone you'd expect to be a perennial all-star? I imagine him as a slightly above average shortstop. Never at the top of the league at his position; but towards the middle of the pack. Not bad for the 20th overall selection, but I'd rather aim higher. Justin Smoak is someone, if everything goes right, you could help build a franchise around. No question which player should be selected if both were available. My expectations for this draft are ridiculously high. Look at recent drafts and players taken around our position. Many good names. There should be no excuses for playing cheap, anyways, as there has been rumors floating around the slot recommendation system would fall once and for all.
  11. I haven't placed much time in researching potential draft picks (not nearly the extent of last year), but there's one pitcher that has received attention I hope to avoid -- Aaron Crow. Watch his video and tell me he's not a TJ recepient before he reaches the majors. I'm amazed he's able to reach 95+ with his arm angle. Aaron Crow: http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/ev...dex.jsp?mc=crow SSI, here's Hicks: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/ev...ex.jsp?mc=hicks Gerrit Cole is the type of pitcher I can imagine falling a bit (before the Yankees or Red Sox take him) because of signability issues and delivery problems, but then developing into an ace four years from now. I know we'd never take a chance on him, though, and with the 8th selection I don't blame them. Need more certainty from that position then someone who needs tweaking
  12. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ May 15, 2008 -> 10:33 AM) Wow, those are great. I kind of knew those had come out, but had outgrown most card collecting by then. Only in looking back at that set do I see what a great job they did of paying homage to the 1962 original mars Attacks series with the garish colors and the over-the-top comic book graphic gore. I want that set now. I'm interested in purchasing the set, but more as a history lesson. We apparently made dinosaurs go extinct now........AND 65 million years ago!
  13. Anyone remember a trading card series from the late 80's called "Dinosaurs Attack!"? Earlier this afternoon I happened to read an article discussing a recent fossil discovery and, for some reason, thought back to the long-departed series. The ridiculous premise behind the cards is dinosaurs are transported back to our current world through a malfunctioning "time scanner" and reek a terrible vengeance upon humanity. It's 55 cards full of non-stop fatalities and often strange images. It's as if their entire purpose was to warp the minds of children. The back of the cards feature discriptions and commentary of events. These are, outside the anime world, the most gruesome cartoon photos imaginable. It's difficult to say how these cards would be tolerated in today's world, since we've just substituted images of violence from trading cards into realistic video games, but I love it how these were marketed to children. My brother owned several of the cards, and even before I found the website below I remembered one image vividy. It was quite disturbing for someone such as myself to see: Jesus, some of these are just strange. Look at this dousy: (Front) (Back) WTF? Main page link for anyone interested in viewing the complete set: http://www.bobheffner.com/dinosaursattack/indexfront.htm
  14. I have nothing to say, but just wanted to attach myself to Soxtalk history. This is going to be HUGE, and when it does take off, I want everyone to know I was here from the beginning.
  15. Offense shut out. Three hits. Unfortunately, it's difficult to win many games in this manner. Great performance from Danks. As with any starter, they're pitching under pressure to throw shutouts from the 1st inning on.
  16. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 13, 2008 -> 11:20 PM) I notice that people have already been suspended from the game threads. I guess this thread's purpose has been fulfilled, eh? Nobody will admit it, but that's the reason this thread was started. Wait, who was suspended and for what? I've been browsing the game day thread and nothing outrageous stood out. I hope we're not traveling down the path of WSI. That is, censoring ourselves for questionable reasons-- and for who, exactly? The children? The media? We don't need to impress anyone with the civility of Soxtalk. That's what WSI doesn't get. No one is impressed with their lack of negativity of "dark cloug" behavior on the main board. I understand there's occasions when posts may go overboard. Reasonable censorship is fine in this cirumstances. And if I missed whatever was removed then it's my mistake. I'd just like to believe this isn't the start of something more.
  17. It's good to see we're finally past the "OMG, tall buildings are targets" phase once and for all. I like the Aqua building. It has to be a good 1,000+ feet if it's comparable to the Aon Center, which -- at a time long since passed -- was the 10th tallest building in the world.
  18. QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 7, 2008 -> 10:35 PM) Hawk was at his absolute worst tonight, apparently Livan Hernandez is Sandy Koufax reincarnated. I understand he's a homer and all but give me a f***ing break all he's doing is adding salt to the wound. HAHA. I took a break from school work earlier, noticed the score was 8-0 on gameday, and immediately wondered how unbearable Hawk must have been at that moment. If the catch phrases haven't convinced any before, he's very predictable. I'm sure DJ threw out Hernandez's supposed "big game" status as well, noting how he has pitched in the world series.
  19. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 6, 2008 -> 09:40 PM) Rally Dolls. This years Rally Crede. YES! It needs to happen! IM IN UR CLUBHOWZ... CAUSIN' NO HITTERS THRU 8.1 INNINGS
  20. THE DOLLS WORKED! HAHAHAHA Atleast we'l have something legitimate to distract the media off that non story from earlier today.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 6, 2008 -> 09:56 AM) YEEHAWW! Them Sox sure is funny! They likes ta cuss, they likes ta put bats 'n dolls. Gosh dern wimin in thir complainin'! Where's mah rifle? YEEHAWW! LOL, so people who don't care about this story and fail to see its offense suddenly have become hillbillies? You've made quite the assumption from just a simple incident such as this. It'd be like me calling you some limp wristed Clay Aiken fan because you care about the feelings of women with a simple prank in a profession where it's hardly unexpected.
  22. QUOTE (Texsox @ May 6, 2008 -> 09:38 AM) Are you suggesting that a business can declare themselves exempt from laws? Laws are written that specifically exempt certain companies from specific laws, but it doesn't work in reverse. Companies cannot declare themselves above the law. Not exempt from the law, just above it. Atleast in this circumstance. The reaction from a blowup doll with baseball bats inserted up its ass will have two different reactions within an office building and a baseball clubhouse. Unlawful and unfair as it may be, the atmosphere associated with a baseball clubhouse should lend people to, atleast, expect acts such as this are possible. You'd never expect hazing, such as RockRaines has been talking about, in an office.
  23. QUOTE (juddling @ May 6, 2008 -> 09:23 AM) Mully and Handley are talking about this now on the Score. Couple of interesting point they brought up....first was that about 30 reporters saw the display but only 6 chose to write about it. Apparently not everyone thought it was such a big deal. 2nd point they made was that in the press box there is so much bad language, and comments that the display in the locker room was almost tame by comparison but yet...noone writes about the press box antics. I know with the Sox poor play right now there isn't much to write about but IMO this is a non-story. I don't know the written and unwritten rules of journalism for a baseball beat writer, but if I were a player I'd be grabbing my colar a little bit over stories such as these. Almost this feeling that you better watch what you say, or do -- even when you're off the record and within the clubhouse -- because you may be some journalists' attempt to fill column space. And, I know, the solution can always be "not to act poorly;" but if these people act a certain way privately, within the company of each and out of sight of the public, there should be a barrier.
