  1. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 05:32 PM) YUCK Disgusting offensive performance. We just like quit after Crede was robbed. The term Corpseball is often thrown around without reason, but today it was just. Cubs pitching retiring 24 of our last 27 hitters is truly the definition of Corpseball. Hopefully tomorrow I won't have to witness many first pitch swings against Prior early in the game. Prior's on a definite pitch count--work him early. If by the fourth it's obvious his pitches have command, than the offense can pick their pitches and swing early in the count. By then there should be 3 runs across the board.
  2. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 04:43 PM) The sox need to bounce back tomorrow. Got some money on this series. You have money, I have civic pride on the line. I don't want to see Prior beat us. Before this series, If there was one game I was looking to win it was tomorrow. They've never been completely dominated by Prior--it's always a set of one or two offense plays which seemingly go against us. I'd be more willing to take this lineup against a hard throwing pitcher such as Prior than a soft tossing control pitcher like Maddux. Prior's off the DL, probably not throwing his pitches with the command and velocity he had prior to being injured. I expect no less than 4 runs off him tomorrow. Anything less and I'm placing the blame squarely on the offense. They hit him hard at Wrigley-- not everthing fell in. Here's there opportunity to give Garland his 13th victory. Best against Best tomorrow.
  3. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 07:35 AM) We should/must win 2 if not all 3....and I'm not saying that because we're playing the Cubs. I'm just saying if we pitch smart or around Lee and take a lot of pitches early on from Prior (he's gotta be on a pitch count) there is no reason to believe we can't win all 3 games. One thing to keep in mind is that this year the shoe is on the other foot. By that I mean the Cubs are the team with nothing to lose and can come in, play loose and let it all hang out. The Sox on the other hand, who sometimes cry about attention, have to put up or shut up. LOS, you have the roles reversed a bit here. Currently, we're holding a comfortable lead in the American League Central. Cubs are trailing both the wild card and (obviously) the NLC. A good series is desperately needed from their team more than us. At worst, we're 6 1/2 AHEAD of the Twins exiting the weekend. At worst, Cubs are 11.5 behind the Cardinals and 5 games out of the Wild Card lead.
  4. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 12:44 PM) Mariotti, Padilla and another columnist from Chicago have said the same. Found Mariotti's article: http://www.suntimes.com/output/mariotti/cst-spt-jay01.html Nowhere does it say he's correct. And I've browsed others in his archive, this is the only one concerning the White Sox which mentions Phillips.
  5. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 12:44 PM) Mariotti, Padilla and another columnist from Chicago have said the same. My fault if I've overlooked this, but I don't remember these many journalists agreeing with Phillipps. If anyone could possibly dig up the articles I'd appreciate it.
  6. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 12:21 PM) I agree with him actually. Ozzie does get away with alot more stuff and lots of people say that reporters don't always print what he says because he would be in a boatload more of trouble. How can you assume this? I couldn't imagine if there's actually more to his post-game rants than what is broadcasted on TV or printed in the papers. Steve Phillipps suggesting Guillen is protected by journalists is not a credible source. Besides him, where have you heard anyone suggest the media protects Ozzie?
  7. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 11:03 PM) I think Mitre is as good if not worse than Diaz. Mitre had a good 2 game stretch. Big whoop. Mitre's fastball is quicker, in addition to more movement in comparison to Diaz. He also has a decent slider. Diaz couldn't pull together two stellar outtings if he were facing the Sweeneyless Royals. Point is the officials responsible for scouting and drafting minor league pitchers are doing a terrible job. Waiting over five years for a contributing arm to come out of the system is not acceptable on a contending club not spending 90million+ on payroll.
  8. QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 07:39 PM) This Hill kid is just mowing down Brewers. Looks like their main bullpen will live None of our pitching prospects would be able to pitch 4 + innings with 6 SO and no hits in relief. I wish our organization could develop a Rich Hill. Or, good forbid, a Sergio Mitre. --Instead of Felix Diaz clones.
  9. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 06:53 PM) I don't think so. It didn't look like it hit him that hard. You watch the replay? Lee smoked the ball. Obviously it wasn't hit hard enough to warrant his removal, but it still may have bruised his hand.
  10. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 06:49 PM) Wow. Are you guys watching this? He gave up a 2-run double to Doug Davis, the Brewers' horrible hitting pitcher and then he serves up a 3-run bomb to Carlos Lee. 8 earned runs in 1.2 IP and he's yanked. Zambrano appeared to deflect a Carlos Lee line drive off his hand earlier in the inning. I'd have to believe his hand was effected. Good to see this demoralizing effort right before our series.
  11. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 10:16 PM) Say what you will about the guy; he handled the situation like a gentleman. That's exactly the problem. I don't wan't to observe celebrities maintaing their composure during these moments. Instead of pushing the douche and providing quality entertainment, Cruise called the alleged journalist a jerk. What was entertaining was the feminine hold applied upon the prankster's hands to keep him from escaping.
  12. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 12:07 AM) McCarthy looks like he has a good curveball. But I also saw that he has a straight 91 MPH fastball with no movement whatsoever. That pitch will get killed in the big leagues. Which is exactly why it doesn't matter whether or not he can pinpoint where he throws this fastball. Starters with wwo pitches, one good/one mediocre, won't go far in this league unless they're both capable of striking you out. Ben Sheets can throw a straight 96 mph fastball because his curveball is devastating. McCarthy, similar in repetoire, obviously can't. Either McCarthy works intently on his changeup or prepares himself for an extended career in the bullpen.
  13. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 11:43 PM) Why is that? Is the difference between being a phenom and not being one really a gopher ball thrown by Luis Vizcaino? That pitch didn't define his outting. There's no telling how well he would have faired if Ozzie would have left him in the game. I didn't merely look at his final pitching lines to determine whether or not "phenom" was approrpriate in describing McCarthy. In his start, there were hard hit outs recorded the entire 5 innings he pitched. He was locating his fastball and curveball well, but it was obvious in the 4th inning Cub hitters were catching up. I held criticism aside until his start in Texas. You may suggest their lineup could make any pitcher look like AAA fodder, but again, he just wasn't fooling these hitters. Today's start against a lineup of minor leaguers only proves he needs work. All I've learned about the collection of these two terms: "phenom" with "Chicago White Sox" is the concept of waiting. Regardless of how well Giovanny piches from this point on, and how many people believe he's the next Zito, I'll hold myself from expecting something special. And by something special, I mean Sergio Mitre "special." Have to set realistic standards.
  14. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 11:42 PM) He is going to be a good future pitcher. He just isnt ready right now. I hope so. I remember in spring training watching a poised pitcher locating his changeup, fastball, and curveball at ease. HItters were chasing McCarthy's high fastball and buckling under his curveball. Where's that pitcher gone? He better get ready soon, because he'll be on this club in September.
  15. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 11:38 PM) The minors would help him find that changeup. I agree. From this point on, I hope no one attaches "phenom" infront of his name, or any other future prospect, until he atleast wins 1 game in the majors.
  16. QUOTE(ScottPodRulez22 @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 11:33 PM) Agreed he need to gain some confidence in the minors. He needs to develop his changeup. No confidence building exercises with Matt Foley, no "working down in the zone" baseball rhetoric either. However, if he never does find that changeup or velocity, he could be a welcomed addition to the bullpen.
  17. Understand McCarthy supporters, it's more than control which is ailing our top pitching prospect. He needs better stuff--period. In past starts Brandon couldn't throw his changeup for a strike. Tonight, his curveball (best pitch) couldn't find the plate. What's left besides a straight 91 mph fastball? I don't care how well you locate a fastball, especially one without movement, it means s*** unless there's other supplimentary pitches to throw off hitters. He needs to develop a changeup. It's really that simple. I don't believe suggestions of learning to "keep the ball down in the zone." How exactly is that something you can work on without tweaking his delivery? Either you have the ability to pitch down in the zone or you don't. When I've seen McCarthy hit his zone, which he has done well, it's been murdered. No one is fooled with McCarthy. And yes, I noticed Dye misjudged a fly ball, which added 2 ER to his line; but it was obvious aside from that moment he was not pitching well. This is exactly why I become frustrated with our minor league pitching. No one ever delivers on their supposed talent--it's always some pitcher with some noticeable flaw that needs correcting. Anyone else aware it's been 5 years since our system has produced a pitcher who has contributed to our team? That's just ridiculous. Even a Sergio Mitre would be a welcome addition. Atleast he's strung together consecutive quality outtings. Something which, apparently, is impossible with our collection of Felix Diaz clones.
  18. Take the high road. Oh wait, that would take the fun of the moment. Say whatever you can to completely dismantle his psyche.
  19. I'm hoping the best for McCarthy, but unless he's magically developed a servicable changeup, or 3 mph on his fastball, it may be a struggle. He's essentially a two pitch pitcher: plus curveball, straight low 90's fastball. With these soft tossers, if you don't have good location up/down, inside/outside, you will be hit hard. Perhaps a start against the lowly Kansas City Royals will be just what is needed for his confidence. However, both of his starts, most noticeably in Texas, hard hit outs were recording throughout his innings pitched . If Sergio Mitre can string together two quality starts, anyone should be able to. You'd think by accident some pitcher from our minor leagues within 5 years would experience immediate success. And we don't even need a complete game, 10 K shutout--just enough to keep our team in the game.
  20. It's a shame this game was on WGN, because I wish I had an opportunity to tape it. Unbelievable 9th inning comeback.
  21. QUOTE(Texsox @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 07:34 PM) Keeping Freddy in for the 8th really looks smart now. Ozzie's philosophy of leaving in pitchers for wins has once again failed. If it's obvious the pitcher doesn't have it, take him out. And this always seems to happen with Garcia. And it always kill us.
  22. You know this would never happen to our pitchers if the opposition was looking for fastballs and hitting them. Christ, all Brazobahn does is throw first pitch fastballs and you can't do anything with it. This is frustrating.
  23. I happened to tune into this ripfest just before it started, and honestly, was not shocked to hear Buehlre receive heavy criticism for his radio interview. Why is it these analysts/sports personalities are more willing to criticize Buehlre for "breaking baseball codes" than Maddux for potentially doctoring a baseball? Sounds like ESPN once again resorts to preserving all things Cubdom. Reminds me of Carl Ravich and Harold Reynolds honestly believing Sosa corking his back was a mistake. These goofs are just not mentally prepared to admit a pitcher of Maddux's maginitude may have been throwing spitballs. Rome and his forum guests only seemed to support Maddux because it may "taint his career," and "EVERY team has a person who does it." Buehrle didn't even mention Maddux by name. He can deny alluding to Maddux as the spitballer or simply apologize. Either way, Cubdom is in an uproar now.
  24. So-- no one is going to suggest this is God's punishment to California for failing to convict Michael Jackson? Because it is.
  25. QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) Good read but didn't even reply to this at all I guess they just think they never "pulled it" edit: also one of those pictures shows one of the towers coming down and it certainly wasn't coming straight down. WTC 7 entire south structure received heavy damage in the collapse of both towers. Rather than risk people working around it, he suggested it would have been the best option to demolish the building. I agree. Either it was going down on its own, or due to controlled explosives. Which makes you wonder what would have happened if one, or perhaps both, Twin Towers hadn't of collapsed. It would have been impossible to rescue anyone with a 1400 ft tower on the brink of destruction right next to you. IMO, the WTC Tower 2 would have been demolished no matter what. The damage was too extensive and was at such a pivotal point at the tower to risk rebuilding.
