Robin Ventura Named White Sox Manager
How often does this happen in modern baseball, for someone with no prior experience in ANY form of coaching to be given a major league managers job? It's not even an issue of mine that he'll be over his head (I personally believe it's always more a "you have to earn your dues" type of job), but what it suggests with Williams. I just see this as a manager who will be constantly under the direction of the GM. In some ways, I can cheer the oversight-- Guillen was reluctant to sit veterans and give rookies extended playing time. If Ventura does this s*** Willaims can give him a kick in the ass. But, the game is about respect, too -- and I wonder how the players will react to him. Overall, I don't have a problem with the hiring. The team will likely have a few mediocre seasons as it is, and if they're attempting to rebuild then it won't matter who is managing the team.

9/27 Blue Jays at White Sox
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 08:59 PM) He'll be back. Sure, as some part of our organization one day, but that whole display doesn't appear to be anything less than a goodbye gesture. Cooper knows better than anyone, and I'd say he knows Buehrle is gawn.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 08:15 PM) Like I've said, it's a slap in the face of the fans. "Players look forward to the bonus as a nice Christmas present" -- Hawk yesterday

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 07:26 PM) I think I've agreed with SS2K5 and Balta more in the last month (mainly since Victory registered) than I have in the last two years combined. I don't like this at all. I would join filibuster (that would make things normal again). But that could get ugly - aka the Gordon Beckham gay thread. I've rarely had the motivation to even browse Soxtalk these last few months, but I've taken notice of Balta's shift in demeanor. He's much more critical of this team. Not that any of it isn't justified, but coming from him I'm not used to it. For anyone not around that often it's even more noticeable.

HAHA, no fan touched that ball. One whiffed and the ball hit the guard rail on a bounce.

"I hope we don't get swept by the Tigers"
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 5, 2011 -> 06:37 AM) Ozzie is not why this team did not win the division this season. What is with you continuing to post this? I don't know of one person that has said that line. It doesn't even f***ing matter, either way. He's unable to properly use his lineup, often his pitching staff, and has a demeanor that has just run its course.

And that, my friends, is a White Sox season

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 10:25 PM) Even though I joked about Dunn pitching, it's insane to hear the news that he almost did pitch. And then watch him stand up there and throw a 99 mph fastball. He's sure built like Jenks.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
I haven't done so in awhile, but I'm listening to the post-game show tonight. I have to hear Rongey talk about this.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
The most selfish act of the game was Escobar jumping up for that ball. For a split second I was hoping it'd split the gap, perhaps rattle around to allow another run to score.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
Well, our guys are doing their best to throw back out the pitching staff as quickly as possible.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:37 PM) Wow, what a debacle. Shane Lindsay is absolutely awful. I'm sorry though, having Cabrera bat there in a 14-0 game is worthy of someone getting thrown at. Unless he wants another pitch, his time in the majors won't be very long.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:34 PM) Ozzie should thank his lucky stars tomorrow is a holiday. He'd get torn to shreds by the sports media/radio tomorrow if not. They came in having to sweep and instead soiled their panties. All of these losses were terrible, too. They finally did what we all expected, and fall apart in September. KEEP THE RUNS COMING, DETROIT!- ESPN Sunday Night Game
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:33 PM) Morel looks like a 10 year old. Morel actually looks like Derrick Turnbow.....which is part of the problem, here.- And that, my friends, is a White Sox season
At this point, everyone should just take joy in their losses. Let it be a fun mixture of bad baseball, terrible coaching, and hopefully more in-fighting between Williams and the coaches!- ESPN Sunday Night Game
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:28 PM) Did you play in the major leagues? How do you know coaches win games? U think for a minute Ozzie might be right about that? Even if he is, I'd rather be 'right' with another coach. His time is done.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 09:26 PM) OG before the game tonight wants ALL coaches back. With the recent flap over a shouting match between hitting coach Greg Walker and GM Ken Williams, Guillen was asked if he were offered an extension by Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf only if he would give up some of his coaches, what would he do? "I'd say, 'Wow, we got to talk about it,' because I feel comfortable with our coaching staff," Guillen said. "Coaches don't win games. They help players, but they don't win games. ... I got the greatest coaches for me. I've got very good coaches." CAN I F'N PUKE! He can take Cooper with him if that's what it takes to rid this team of Walker and Guillen.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
Pitch around Konerko. Preserve the shutout.- ESPN Sunday Night Game
The White Sox just can't make me happy.......- ESPN Sunday Night Game
Please no hit us. Why not at this point?- Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) So the 2005 team won despite Oz and the 2011 team lost because of Oz. His time has come. Just be at peace with it.- Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) Yeah, but you end it still friends right? And it's not personal. Winning changes everything. Maybe 2012 becomes the make or break for Ozzie, the coaches and KW MAYBE 2012 is the year?! You sound ridiculous right now. Why exactly should any of those names be given another season? I'll take a guess -- "see what happens with Dunn, maybe Guillen will understand not to hesitate substituting struggling veterans, watch young players progress with team." But then there's always the unexpected, every season has it. A surprise injury, or maybe another mystery player or two under performs. You'll never have your perfect term by which to judge the coaches and general manager.- Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) Walker is a class act. That said, I have wanted a new hitting coach since 2006. Even in 2005 Dye and Konerko had long slumps. The way he handled those questions was excellent. Team first. I try to never wish another person to lose their job. Perhaps Walker can have a different role in the organization or maybe they add a second hitting coach which Hawk always suggests. The Sox can not dump Rios and Dunn and would be crazy to dump Bacon until another coach tries to fix him. The Sox would be foolish to risk Viciedo, De Aza, Flowers future as hitters as well. 1. Replace the manager and coaches 2. See if team improves 3. If they don't improve, KW has to be accountable NO, enough chances; Williams is done. Everyone stop coming up with these scenarios that give anyone currently in a coaching/managing position one more chance. Everyone has been here for long enough that we know what they've done, and what they're capable of. The time has come to start over. And what exactly is "improvement" in your eyes? If I was a Williams fan, I'd say that exact line too and then when the team wins 85 games next year I'd come up with some other excuse to justify holding onto him. There will always be a million.- Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 12:41 PM) Where is Dick Allen in all of this? It took this long for KW to figure out the swing that Gordon took with him from Georgia was better? LOL, I thought most of us with the exception of the Walker apologists believed that. The guy was a stud. Now he's a headcase. And good luck getting him back to where he was, I don't see it happening, even after Walker is fired. I think the damage is done, but I hope I'm wrong. LOL and I recall people suggesting his personality and level swing would allow him not to be in extended slumps. He may look and have the personality of some rugby meathead, but he obviously knows that something is fundamentally wrong his his swing. I remember one day (I don't watch games too often, now) hearing a different song when he approached the plate at home. The Outfield was s***canned. I guess he's to that point now where even a different entrance song would be a welcomed change.- Walker and Williams Argue
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) And we'd be pretty much in first place if it weren't for that 11-22 start, right? I don't believe players think about themselves any differently than us. When I read posts that basically amount to shoulder shrugging and pointing out the calendar date to avoid feeling urgency, I honestly feel the same is felt in the clubhouse. Next season begins in early March, not April. That doesn't mean manage to win meaningless spring training games, but everyone should be putting forth the full effort. Not just using it as an extended vacation, and then thinking to themselves "I'll wait until the season to begin giving a s*** and working on my swing." - ESPN Sunday Night Game
