This thing was never going to work if the Sox weren't going to open up the checkbook a bit and get into that upper 25% of payrolls. I know you have your ownership bone to pick and I don't really care to get into a discussion about that. Guys like Grandal and Keuchel are needed on legit WS contenders. But if the Sox will never graduate to the big kid pool, the whole thing was never going to work anyway. I was as disappointed as anyone in the last offseason and their lack of willingness to spend $. But I am not convinced they won't eventually stretch into that top 25%. We're still in the early stages of this thing. But, despite having a pretty big gap between our opinions on most things Sox related, I do get where you're coming from. Its frustrating. But you can't have it both ways - b**** about not spending money, but when they sign two very well respected vets who filled major team needs, then complaining about the money they spent on them.

We are in year 1 of the window. The window is an extended one IMO when looking at the roster and control - through at least 2026. I get the urge to want to be good right away, but trading Crochet for a 4 month stop gap would be beyond stupid.

Bryant is a FA getting paid market value or slightly under. Giving up Crochet for a few months of any player is idiotic, not to mention when the Sox are well under full strength and likely will be for the rest of the season. I want the Sox to be in a position to win multiple championships - not push their chips in year 1 as a knee jerk reaction to Eloy/Robert getting hurt. Id love to trade for Bryant, but zero percent chance I am giving up Crochet for him, or really any of our top guys. Which means we won’t get him, which is also fine. Go trade for David Peralta or someone similar and give up very little - this team is still plenty good to make the playoffs. Sacrificing the backend of our window to go all in on 2021 would be beyond shortsighted, and Hahn isn’t going to do that. Sorry.

The bolded below says it all. The amount of cluelessness you see here with regard to Grandal is simply amazing. Grandal deserves to heat for 2021 - injured or not - he's been terrible at the plate and behind it. But the guy was exactly who he has always been last year, and bafoons were mad mouthing him daily.

At least its not the arm or shoulder with Crochet.

THIS. 100% THIS. I don't think 90% of this board realizes how few good all-around catchers there are. It amazes me every single day. Lost in their own world, I guess. Yasmani is a frustrating player to watch, but he's an elite overall catcher. There are few guys who are good defensive catchers and above average offensive producers in the entire history of the game. if you don't like Grandal's game, there isn't a catcher on the planet outside of maybe Realmuto you're going to be impressed with. And Realmuto and Grandal literally produced shockingly similar numbers in 2020.

Fair enough, I won't really argue that. As I said a few mins ago, the defense has been very disappointing. Offensively, I am not too concerned (and definitely not ready to declare him terrible like most of Soxtalk) but its been ugly the first few weeks. No doubt about it.

Was he wearing a harness when he had all the errors pre-injury? Tatis is really good. Not saying he's not. But I'd bet my bottom dollar he isn't a SS long term. Heck, if he keeps playing like he is now, he may not be a SS in a few months.

Except he wasn't average at best last year. He was exactly who he has always been last year. He has been bad so far in 2021. A lot of the stats point to a significant amount of bad luck, but he has been bad. The defense has been much worse than I expected as a whole. Definitely agree there. Good catchers don't grow on trees. Yasmani, despite his faults, is one of the best. The stats bear this out clear as day, whether you want to use them or ignore them. I do hope he figures it out and his luck starts to even out, because the 2021 version has been very bad. But the sample remains very small.

Lol, effort isn't the problem with Grandal. And Williams didn't trade Tatis, Hahn did. Tatis is a superstar and that remains a colossal mixture of fuckup and bad luck, but he's also not long for SS. Not sure where he ends up longterm, but it isn't going to be SS or 3B. He leads the league in errors and missed at least 10 games.

I love the common narrative among Sox fans - rip the Sox for not spending enough money (fair compliant). And then rip the Sox for actually spending what it takes to get one of the best catchers in the game that fills multiple needs for the ballclub. "No - don't spend the money that way!" Its comical. I too want the Sox to suddenly become the Dodgers financially, but its not happening.

He doesn't. I too would prefer Madrigal be in the lineup over Leury.

I mean....one of Leury/Hamilton has to play CF....

Not sure if serious or not, but honestly it might if he keeps hitting the ball right at the 2B playing short RF. Honestly, he looks helpless at the plate right now. Pretty disappointing, though I suspect he'll figure it out eventually and end up around where he always does.
