So trading him (or McCann) for scraps accomplishes what exactly for the White Sox? Collins will get chances in 2020. He will be the first guy up if about 20% of the roster gets IL'd (Grandal, Mccann, Abreu, EE). Sox could move McCann mid season as well. No need to just punt Collins because he doesn't have an OD 2020 roster spot. What you're advocating for isn't good business.

He meant closer. As in, any time he spends on the MLB roster is that much time closer to FA. All of this is moot anyway. Collins is going to be in AAA. He'll get some chances with the Sox in 2020, but they're not going to give McCann away just so they can downgrade the major league team. Collins and McCann are both worth more to the Sox than they are in trade. Therefore, Collins will be in AAA.

"Trading the poor guy and let him have a decent shot somewher else" is a terrible way to run a baseball organization.

I don't think there is a bullpen in baseball that is filled with guys that don't give their fans anxiety. Sox pen isn't a major plus, but it should be average with upside.

At least we don't project to have any complete gas cans in the pen (assuming Herrera can bounce back some). With plenty of interesting arms in the upper minors in Hamilton, Burdi, Johnson, Heuer, Ruiz and Foster as back stops - not to mention SP like Dunning, Lambert, Steiver, Rodon, Lopez and Gonzalez who could be used in relief roles to ease into action or due to change of roles.

Just refreshed my memory on those rules, and yah, he can't elect free agency. You need either 3+ years of MLB service time (he has 2 and change) or been outrighted previously, which he hasn't been. So chances are if Covey clears waivers, he'll be in Charlotte. Which is fine.

Flores, Kubat and (ugh) Detwiler should all be in the AAA rotation as well and could take a spot start if need be (hopefully there won't be a need). Flores on 40 man so probably top of the list with Dunning and Lambert missing the first half, at least.

Isn't it a requirement that in order to be able to elect free agency, you have to have been outrighted previously? I don't believe Covey has, and therefore I am not sure electing free agency will be an option for him. I could be wrong on that, but pretty sure that is the rule. Sox could elect to do a him a solid and release him upon request though.

Genuinely surprised here. Figured Covey was a few guys down the list. We have 5 "catchers" on the 40 man. But not sad to see him go. That said....he's likely to clear, so don't get too excited!!

He will be suspended as soon as he is hired. So if he doesn't get a job in 2020, he will be suspended for a season as soon as he is hired. I don't expect his next job to be a managerial job for this exact reason. And no, I wouldn't do this. But I strongly support other ideas to get Ricky Renteria away from this clubhouse.

I don't really think the Sox want to ask Mendick to play on left side much either. Frankly, I don't really care if they roll with internal options, or resign Yolmer. I personally would be after Brad Miller, Brock Holt or even Zobrist on the cheap. Yolmer would be ok. I'd also be fine giving Mendick some run early in the year. At the end of the day we're talking about the 25th or 26th man that is going to get 2B at bats against LHP in the early going. I am not going to get too worked up about it, but I do think having an IF that could fill in at 3B and SS for multiple games would be nice - especially with the way Yoan gets knicked up - and I don't really see that guy on the roster currently.

I don't think Leury could be asked to cover 3B or SS for multiple weeks though. He would get eaten alive defensively IMO.

With being fired, if anyone hired Luhnow/Hinch, they'll have to serve their suspensions then. Effectively a ban for Luhnow. Hinch may get a job as a bench coach or some shit - sit a year- and then come back.

No need to apologize. I guess its better than nothing, but its not very much. At least make it hurt. No top 5 picks and no ITNL $ for three seasons, the max fine ($5M) and the suspensions is the least it should have been.
