Sox Sign Jon Jay; 1 year/$4 mil, Charlie Tilson DFA'd
The offseason after Cordell was acquired Hahn mentioned that many teams asked him repeatedly about Cordell. We haven't really seen a healthy Cordell yet, but not sure we'll ever get the chance. He does have an option left, so would be great to get him a bunch of healthy ABs in Charlotte through June and see what we have.

Yah, really no one on that list that I feel great about giving away for nothing. I think pretty much all of them get claimed if DFA'd.

That is precisely my point.

Ya, I disagree.

At this point, if they're flipping guys in July, they need to flip for single A upside lottery tickets or recently signed interesting international guys. There isn't space for more AAAA or close to majors but blocked fringy guys. There isn't room.

For sure, but just looking at right now, you can see how there will be a crunch with a large number of guys that will need to be protected next offseason. Most guys currently on the 40 man are keepers, or at least interesting enough to think they'd have some value around the league.

In other news, the 40 man is getting a bit crowded. Starting to get to the point that cutting guys may get a bit painful. Order of next guys to go, IMO: Manny Banuelos, Ryan Cordell, Dylan Covey, Kodi Medeiros, Thyago Vieria, Jose Rondon, Carson Fulmer, Jordan Stephens, Nicky Delmonico, Adam Engel. The first few could go without much pain, but you start to lose guys that are interesting and you'd like to hold onto. Everyone on this list but Medeiros and Stephens have MLB experience. The roster crunch next season is going to be real. Hope Rick thinks about some creative trades over the next 12 months to trim some of this and get back value that doesn't need to be protected for awhile.

Machado signs with Padres 10/300
I think the Phillies would potentially have interest in other 3B options if MM goes elsewhere. The Sox, ya - this is their plan. The Yankees, they have internal options they can roll with at the position

Machado signs with Padres 10/300
For Manny - so he doesn't lose more suitors. If the Phillies sign Harper, who is he left with other than the Sox. For the teams - so they can move on with their offseason plans. I agree there isn't a rush, and this certainly has not been completed in hasty fashion, but at some point, it makes sense for both teams to get the deal done.

Tilson will probably clear and be stashed in Charlotte. Leury is a China doll, so decent chance we see him again this season.

Yah...that's a big deal.

No apologies necessary. Just curious what @Whitesox27 concluded from it.

Correct, I am referring to that neon sign. But Mike seemed to indicate that that sign was in one of the Chicago airports (I don't know one way or the other). Didn't see it blow up, so figured it wasn't accurate, but wanted to ask.

@Whitesox27 I saw a post on your Twitter yesterday that appeared to be a screengrab of Machado's instagram story that showed him in the Chicago airport? Was that actually in the case? Were you able to dig any deeper on that?

2018-9 MLB off season free agency thread
Definitely. This is one of the drawbacks of this Machado process taking so long. Perhaps the Sox plan is to just roll with internal option if they fail to sign MM, and I won't fault them for that. But with bolstering the pen to the extent they have and the secondary pieces that have been added, grabbing a guy like Dozier for 1 year / $9M and plugging him in at 3B (or more likely 2B, and moving Moncada to 3B for Madrigal in the future), made a ton of sense IMO.

I hope Charlie Tilson is enjoying his final minutes as a member of the 40 man.

There is basically nothing out there that backs up this take.

Man, was really hoping for some positive news/developments today.

Stanton's AAV was $25M. It will be much higher. Beating Greinke's $34.5M AAV is the hurdle IMO.

I'd prefer $330M to $250M as well. So can't really blame him. Even after taxes, that is enough for like 10 mansions!

Where's he gonna play? They already paid Donaldson $20M for this season, and have Swanson at SS, Albies at 2B and Carmargo hanging around. I agree Braves would have made a ton of sense without Donaldson, but I don't see it now.
