Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
Correct, back injury was last season.

Cordell has missed the majority of the season with a back injury. I believe he is OPSing over .800 since his return. Realistically with Leury hurt, Cordell should be up getting regular at bats over a guy like Ryan LaMarre. Cordell is probably nothing, but they're going to give him a shot at some point.

8/23 White Sox at Tigers 12:10
Things look pretty bleak without Jose in there.

Castillo rehabbing in Charlotte
Castillo placed on DL this morning with "shoulder inflammation". His suspension must have been up. Sox twitter says he will continue to rehab in Charlotte.

Eloy Jimenez: I'm Ready (Players' Tribune)
This would be great. But why would Eloy do that? He seems like a confident dude. Me thinks he'd rather bet on himself.

Eloy Jimenez: I'm Ready (Players' Tribune)
The Sox are doing the right thing here. Long term, 162 games in a potentially meaningful season is far more valuable (even if is an expensive season) than 40ish in a lost season.

2018 White Sox catch-all thread
I assumed he'd go Sunday on regular rest. I'd be a little surprised to see him go Friday on short rest even though he had an abbreviated start on Tuesday. I figured they'd go Shields (Thur), Lopez (Fri), Gio (Sat), and Kopech (Sun). But I see what you're saying with the listed probables today.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
I don't see the Sox outrighting Cordell or Rondon this offseason. I think they'd probably rather hang onto Clarkin too. But the point still remains.

Wouldn't hate a 3 run bomb off Hector here.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
Its not quite that simple. Just because someone didn't claim a player doesn't mean they wouldn't be interested in acquiring said player simply at the price of his salary. Teams that are out of the race aren't giving up assets for a reliever at this point. So ignore them. Teams that could use bullpen help in the AL, like the Indians for example, know the Sox aren't just going to hand him over for free. So if you put in a claim, you know you're going to at least going to have to give up some asset to get him.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
If they really didn't want him in 2019, they could have non-tendered him and had an extra 40 man spot to protect someone from the rule 5. Basically puts us in the same spot we are today. I don't pretend to think that I can do Rick Hahn's job better than him, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he either believes Paulino was as good as it was going to get or that he's actually more interesting than his reports and numbers indicate. But from the outside looking in, it looks like a nothing/garbage return on a useful LH reliever that isn't paid much and still has 1.25 years of control. Similar pitchers with less control (Zach Duke) returned more in recent weeks. I just think it was possible to play the long game here and end up a little ahead of where they did, but ultimately, we're bordering on splitting hairs, so I will just leave it at that.

Race for the worst 2018 record (Top 5 pick) again
He'll be in here in a week and a half. But I agree, drop LaMarre and get him up here.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
Not if you get something that may actually help you in Chicago down the line its not. Whether or not that would come to fruition, who knows. But well worth risking $500k IMO. Teams have done quite a bit better in recent weeks for similar arms.

They saved $500k. While that sounds like a ton of money to me, it's basically nothing. They theoretically could have told the Phillies to pound sand if they didn't provide a better offer and then try to move Avilan in November before the Rule 5 deadline and maybe done a little better, perhaps find a more interesting guy that a team wasn't going to be able to protect. But you never know. The fact that Paulino is Rule 5 eligible and would need to be added anyway is a bit telling. Not a huge deal either way, but still a tad curious IMO.

Hard to put lipstick on a pig. But with his lineups and bunting the last 2 nights, not super impressed with McEwing in an admittedly very small sample.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
Right, but that holds a little less water when he is controlled thru 2019 and can be traded to anyone again in the offseason.

Also still have three lefties in the pen in Santiago, Cedeno and Fry.

BR says he's controlled thru next season.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
Right. Just a little puzzling. Its certainly not a huge deal. Avilan was never going to return anything significant.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
The Sox have plenty of spots for guys that are a real risk to be taken unless they plan on signing multiple FAs. It definitely isn't to the point of hurting negotiating power ala the situation a team like the Yankees are in this offseason, and likely the Sox next offseason.

Rondon also being recalled
Nice. Hope he can get somewhat regular PT. I'd let him play some 3B somewhat regularly. Yolmer has been pretty exposed at this point.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
Yah, I don't really get it. Avilan has come back to earth quite a bit lately, but still....would think Hahn would have been able to do better at some point if he held onto Avilan. He is a quality major league reliever.

Luis Avilan traded to Phillies for Felix Paulino
Seems like a pretty uninspiring return. With Avilan controlled next season, surprised we didn't see Hahn hold onto him in hopes of getting a better offer this winter. Paulino reads like he is minor league filler.
