QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) Funny there was only one post disagreeing with yanking Sale before the bullpen failed. Then the experts came out. Last time Sale faced Boston, Robin left Sale in too long and he ended up on DL. This time everyone complains he pulled him too early. But he was over his average number of pitches for the season so I have no problem w pulling him. Sale's arm is more important than a single game. As far as choices in the BP, they all are mediocre. We traded our closer and went into the season hoping to find one. They still haven't so there will be more late game collapses. On the positive side, Gillaspie and Abreu are having great series. Now the Sox have to beat Lester to take the series. Should be a good match up w Q.

Red Sox cut AJ loose today. Peavy looks like he will be traded to St Louis.

When Does Flowers Get Replaced As Everyday Catcher?
SCCWS replied to Feeky Magee's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (sammy esposito @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) Lately he appears to be swinging the bat anywhere that the ball isn't. The damn thing keeps moving on him. In fairness, he made a great play last night on the roller w bases loaded. Since the pitching staff is really on a roll lately, I doubt Robin will want any changes at catcher. -
I think the home plate ump was perfect for Carroll. He called the low strike all night long and Carroll did a great job of hitting the bottom of the strike zone. Now if the ump last night was not vcalling low strikes, the outcome may have been very different. That is the fine line for a pitcher who has to nibble.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 08:27 AM) The reality of the situation for us is if we trade Viciedo now, we enter next offseason with holes at LF & DH and a huge lack of power in our lineup. Given some of our other needs, primary C & SP, that's a pretty large to-do-list for just one offseason and with no solid internal options to fill them. What's it going to cost us in terms of cash and prospects to fill all these holes from the outside? Will there be other options even available? People can hate all they want on Viciedo and be eager to move him, but when Jordan Danks is the next best option we have in-house, things can get a lot uglier. Having said this, I'm sure the stats-oriented posters will say Danks' superior defense and base-running would make him a more valuable player, which I would find laughable. At some point, certain posters have to accept the fact that baseball is not context-neutral and teams with the highest WARs aren't awarded automatic playoff spots. A team playing 81 games at the Cell with Conor at 3B, Garcia in RF, & Danks in LF (or someone like him) isn't going to do well offensively over the course of a season. It's critical to have some balance in your lineup and having those three guys at power-based positions would be a disaster IMO. Wait. That is not the reality of the situation. You are not going to trade Viciedo for cash. The object of trading him is get a a player(s) back who fill a hole. So if you trade him and get another outfielder, a SP or C in return, you are not worse off. You only trade him if you get something of equal value back. The Boston article yesterday mentioned one of their 3 young right handed starting picthers in AAA/ML and a prospect. That might fill the 4th SP spot and maybe you get lucky w a prospect. You don't trade Viciedo unless it fills an existing need or unless you get what you perceive to be a better OF option.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) The second player would not be from the current roster, it would be a prospect. Nava is up because Victorino is injured. He has struggled all year both in ML and AAA. He is 31 years old

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 11:26 AM) I'd be thrillied with Webster or Workman for Viciedo. Actually I like DeLa Rosa the best. I do get the benefit to see them at AAA and Boston. Webster gives up too many homeruns although maybe that can be fixed. Workman seems to be struggling once he got in the Red Sox rotation. The Cubs really worked him over this week. But I would take a package of DeLaRosa and guessing they will throw in Nava which would would give us another LH outfield bat. Hopefully Cherington feels Viciedo could tear up the wall in Fenway. Boy that would be a steal.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 04:58 AM) Let's face it. He's gonna be around as our manager as long as jerry is alive and owns the team. He's the polar opposite of Oz's personality and that's what everybody on the Sox front office wants. It is important to remember that this is a rebuilding year and the roster reflects that. I think the biggest problem facing this organization is still the minors. Until the Sox can have a AAA team with players who can help when the need arises, any manager will struggle. Who was the last non-pitcher that came up through the White Sox system and turned out to be an adequate ML player???? I would guess Beckham and Flowers and certainly Flowers is still questionable.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 08:12 AM) I think 3 players, one similar to Avisail, on similar to Montas who was the second piece, and then instead of 2 longshots at the end you have someone in between the Avisail and Montas types, maybe an MLB reliever or a good prospect, something like that. Alexei better get hot quickly. He is down to .297 and has 0 RBI's in last 10 games.

Gamethread to continue the good feeling of a win

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) Lineups https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/4818771...0577024/photo/1 OK, I'm calling it...Gillaspie finally runs into one tonight. Don't say that. The railing in front of their dugout can easily take out a 3rd baseman on a foul pop. -
Who do you most want to keep after the Core 4?
SCCWS replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 05:11 PM) Which makes ZERO sense unless it's only once per week...you don't take a Top 100 prospect at a position where power is at a premium (and you're in the bottom 1/3rd of organizations still) and sit him for players who are more likely to become utility infielders or 4th/5th outfielders. They continue to use him but he most likely will not be top 100 next year. He strikes out at a 35%+ clip besides hitting below .200. He is over his head in AAA so far. -

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) Good to know. It would absolutely be great if the Sox found suitable trades for both Alexei and Beckham before August 1st. Get Micah and Sanchez two months of at-bats. I hope they don't. Semien came up struggled and now he is struggling worse in AAA. Bringing him up in April may have resulted in a lost season. Bring up Micah and Sanchez in September so they get as much time as possible in AAA. At this point in late June, neither one is even playing the same position on a consistent basis. Both have been bounced around although the last week Johnson has been moved to 2nd. But that bumped Sanchez to 3rd and Davidson to the bench. -

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 24, 2014 -> 03:02 PM) I am excited for the end of Flowers/De Aza/Viciedo. So next year we have... C - no one 1B - Abreu 2B - Johnson/Semien 3B - Gillaspie/Davidson SS - Alexei LF - no one CF - Eaton RF - Garcia DH - no one Hahn has to find a catcher, 1B/3B/DH, outfielder, a SP and maybe one serious bullpen piece and a couple of fliers. Either way, we have some in house talent that could factor next year (Johnson, Semien, Davidson) and some money to spend. I think we'll be in for another fun offseason. Before you plug in guys at the ML level, they have to produce at AAA. So far this season, Davidson really belongs at AA. He continues to hit below .200 and is striking out at Flowers/Dunn type rates. Semien hit 260 last year at AAA after getting promoted from AA. He is hitting in low 200's since he was sent down. Now obviously some of that can be attributed to being sent down but he is far from ready and unfortunately a good ST showing put him in the ML and he probably belonged in AAA all year. Johnson started slowly since being promoted but is hot right now. He is playing 2B but my guess is they will not deal Beckham during the season and force him coming up too early unless they get a great offer. Saladino has struggle defensively but has hit pretty well. Sanchez has played the best of all of them so far but he is being bounced around the 3 infield positions. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) What is the purpose of acquiring Putz? You can't trade him for anything and he won't be a part of the future.i will always be amazed at how popular other teams' crap is on this board. I know the whole doesn't cost much thing, Coop will fix him, and maybe there is a chance of that happening, but it is slim. And keep in mind, every minute Coop or the staff spend trying to fix these past their prime guys is a minute not spent on a player that might have a shot at helping the team. Hopefully someday, the Sox will have enough legit prospects where guys like Putz aren't thread-worthy. I agree. We are trying to take last place in the division away from the Twins. Why waste time trying to correct Putz as opposed to trying to develop one of the younger bullpen projects. Jones will bump someone out so I hope the younger relievers get to stay under Coop for development for the future. Putz would only bump another spot. Now if someone in the organization thinks Putz could be salvaged and used next year then that is a reason to consider it.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 12:45 PM) Meh, this is a team coming off a 99 loses and going into a rebuilding year, you don't really need a top notch closer when you're not expected to win. Reed was gonna be on his way to making "big bucks" so you trade him while he's still cheap. Hahn seemingly had a plan for the bullpen as well, that plan was loading up on guys who didn't give up the long ball. Reed doesn't fit that plan. He's given up 8 HRs in 29 innings, only John Danks has given up more HRs on this team with 9 in 82. The bullpen as a whole has given up 12 HRs, and that includes 2 by Frank Francisco who wasn't originally "part of the plan". Reed does allow homeruns, many solo ones. But he also has only allowed 13 earned runs and 4 walks in 29 innings. His replacement , Belisario, making big bucks now has allowed 18 earned runs. Reed is only 25 so maybe he gets better. Belisario is 32.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 11:55 AM) Absolutely. Davidson is a top 100 prospect. He obviously hasn't worked out thus far in hindsight but to get a guy who was viewed as highly as he was for a reliever is somewhat impressive. To say they got nothing is a little silly. I have a problem with the Reed trade. He was not just a reliever, he was a closer. At this point, we have tried 4-5 relievers and have yet to find a ML quality closer. Now maybe Belisario will be that closer. If not maybe Jones. But luckily this year doesn't matter but we better find a real closer by next year. Because Reed on a lousy team has more saves than our entire bullpen. Meanwhile Davidson is over his head in AAA and is a below average fielder at 3B. daidson is still young but so is Reed. I have no problem w Peavy and Rios trades as they freed up serious payroll. Reed made literally nothing at $550,000 , they signed big buck relievers in Downs and Belisario ( 6.7Mil) and we still are not sure if we have a Reed replacement

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 07:18 AM) Flowers neeeds to sit for 3-5 straight games. In Charlotte. He has had the worst strikeout % in all of baseball this season. But with his recent tear of strikeouts he is quickly closing in on Howard to have the most K's regardless of PA.

One of the worst Sox losses I've ever witnessed

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) I would rather have the best pitcher on my staff face the best hitter on the other team. I'll take those chances. This one just didn't work. \ I think you missed the point. No question you want your best pitcher facing Trout. But the question is was Sale out of gas. If so, he was not your best pitcher at that point. But if he pulls him, fans would complain as well. Hell, Ozzie won a WS and fans say he couldn't manage. Robin loses 99 and he can't manage. Walker stunk/not his fault. It is what message boards are for. -

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 08:06 AM) To be fair, many Sox fans were pretty tough on Robin during the Q & A session at Soxfest this year. I'm sure fans will forever be fond of his playing days, but Sox fans are not blind. In fact, I'm calling it now- if the Sox have another 2nd half collapse and they only win between 70-75 games, Robin will be on the hot seat. If they don't fire him, then Hahn should be on the hot seat for not bringing in a better manager. Well if you go back and look at the Pre-season poll, many fans predicted 70-75 wins. Heck 75 wins is a 12 game improvement over last season. -

QUOTE (qwerty @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 08:27 AM) Makes you wonder how Sale gets disciplined by the White Sox for his temper tantrum? I would figure out a way to fine him, and fine him hard. A message needs to be sent that no matter who the player is, liabilities cannot be had. What he did very well could have been career ending. Think about it. Agree that is why he was not allowed on team bus after the game. He had to walk back to the hotel. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 01:40 AM) At the end of the 7th inning inning Sale let up 2 hits before recording the 3rd out. He was at around 90-92 pitches. He came out for the 8th (no problems), let up a single, Alexei bobbles a sure out at 2nd (Sale is not up to 100 pitches with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs), Sale then lets up another hit to make it bases loaded, another hit to score a run, and then Coop came out to talk to Sale who was at 115 or so pitches and left him in to face Trout and gave up a grand slam on a 3-2 pitch.... You make the judgement Fire Coop -
Sox lost last night because they only scored 5 runs. Tigers-Indians-Twins-Royals all scored 8 runs last night and won their games.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) I've already mapped out all possibilities: Warriors trade Harrison Barnes and 2 future #1s for Kevin Love Celtics trade Phil Pressey and Brandon Bass, 2 future #1s for Kevin Love Lakers ask for Kevin Love and receive him Nick Friedell interviews Gar Forman after: "We like our team." Nick Friedell: But who would we trade for! Celtics have 4 Number 1's in next two years so they will probably offer 1 each year and Green and/or Sullinger and Bogens. Bogens is cap clearance.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) We will draft Kolek at 90% slot and then take Hoffman in the second round with the leftover bonus going to Hoffman as well as 10% of our Round 3 pitcher who will also be awesome. And then we will win. Everything. Doubt Hoffman will be there. Story in Providence Journal last weekend was Red Sox liked him( they often choose players who drop due to injury when picking in mid-late 20's.) But they felt he would be going 15-20
