Covey is frustrating. If he learned to push off and really drive through his pitches he’d be so much more effective. He stays too tall and leaves almost everything belt high. If he worked his fastball knee high consistently he’d be incredibly hard to hit

I still think Jose's value could be underrated around here. He unfairly gets lumped into the "1b slugger" category that definitely doesn't have a great market. Jose is flat out a better hitter than the 1B that struggled to get contracts though. Maybe I'm overly optimistic but I'd hold out for a top 50(ish) prospect + another top 10 prospect from the team.

Jose showing his worth...what team wants to give up a top 50 prospect for him? -

Let him go back out? I know the pitch count isnt high but think I’d be content with 6 scoreless and leave it up to the pen -

This is the 1st time I’m watching a full Covey start...has he worked this up the zone the whole time or struggling with location tonight. Shows how good his fastball is though with the 0 still on the board -

Yeah I agree. Even worst case scenario you have to stick Yoan in LF, his bat SHOULD still play plenty there. -

If Covey was locating his fastball 6-8 inches lower he’d probably be perfect right now -

I’ve been very anti moving Moncada from 2B...starting to look like it might not be such a bad idea. -

Don't get me wrong, you don't change anything with the way he's going now...but am I the only that sees closer in Covey? That fastball is just filthy, would love to see him throw it as hard as he can for only 1 inning. Only if the starter thing doesn't work of course -
How eventful will be this years deadline?
TheFutureIsNear replied to wrathofhahn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ok got ya. I understand your point, but I think/hope the mindset of the team has to change. I can understand not getting into bidding wars with high price free agents, but I think it’s going to be hard to establish a long term winning franchise without retaining our own players. To me it just seems unrealistic to expect to continuously develop and replace high level players. Obviously Rondon hasn’t established himself on a consistent high level yet, but in this hypothetical situation of him getting a huge contract he would be and trying to replace him with a young/unproven arm to save $ would be frustrating to me as a fan. -

1. Nobody owes anybody a “discount”. Don’t understand why you’d be critical of any person trying to maximize their value. There isn’t even a “for the good of the team salary cap” excuse in baseball. 2. That’s called counting your chickens before they hatch. -
Damn that hurts Yoan. Almost like this team enjoys shooting themselves in the foot
-
It wasn’t a good throw, but it was certainly catchable. As a little leaguer you are taught to find the base and then stretch to where the ball is going. Jose was both off balance and trying to stretch before he saw the direction of the throw. That completely killed his catch radius. That ball could have been only 2 feet away from the bag and he still wouldn’t have gotten to it.
-
Yikes Jose. This team is hard to watch...

That’s the type of play that kills a pitcher of his defense can’t make it. Especially a rusty pitcher, needs all the help he can get

The White Sox have lost the most strikes in baseball
TheFutureIsNear replied to daggins's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Love how you say that so casually...you’re talking about a fraction of a fraction of a second to differentiate the 3 feet or so of where the ball crosses to where it hits the catchers glove. It’s just not realistic, the catchers need to their job so the umpire can do his -
Cedeno called up, Bummer sent to AAA
TheFutureIsNear replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Cedeno had an opt out clause coming up so this makes sense. Try to showcase him in the majors for a month or so for a trade instead of just letting him go. Bummer will be back -
The 2018 MLB Draft Thread (Tracker in OP)
TheFutureIsNear replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
Bohm was scared out of his mind to the point that it was almost comical. Probably overthinking it on my part, but as a GM I’d have a tough time taking a kid that can’t handle pressure. He’s going to have to be on a much bigger stage to be a successful big leaguer -
Draft Day Poll: Who is your guy at #4?
TheFutureIsNear replied to Eminor3rd's topic in FutureSox Board
I’m still going out on my limb saying Cole Winn will be the best pick. Tough pick to make obviously, Madrigal is the much safer and obvious pick other than Mize tho. -
I know it would be extremely unconventional and risky, but I really think I might take Cole Winn at #4. I expect no one to agree and know there’s almost 0% of it happening, but I think he’s the #1 pitcher in this class. He has a fluid smooth delivery, the ball explodes out of his hand, and he has a 12-6 curve that already flashes plus. I think he’ll have a very bright future once he fills out and gets a few years in the minors under his belt.

Like I said, more of a slight flag that raises a question than a real critique. I don’t think it’s crazy question though. As you said, it happens in other sports. And in other sports players get overdrafted because their production was elevated surrounded by other great players. Is it not possible Madrigal saw a lot of fastballs hitting 4th surrounded by a bunch of guys with near .400 OBP’s?
-
1st, I fully admit that I don’t follow college baseball so I could be very ignorant in my observations. Not afraid to admit that... But when I saw the Oregon st offense it threw up a red flag for me. Weak competition? favorable hitting environment? My 1st instinct when I see 5 guys (Kwan has great #’s too) in a batting order that seemingly rarely get out is that something has to be up. Maybe team stats like this are more common than I’m aware of, but just seems almost too good to be true that all 5 guys are that good of hitters. I wont be upset with a Madrigal pick, but as I said earlier it’s definitely not a good year to have the 4th pick. The high end talent in this draft is lacking. Hopefully we can make up for it with a good haul of overall talent
-
Not to sound like I’m bashing Madrigal...but is not concerning that pretty much all of the 2-6 part of ORegon St’s lineup has video game like #’s?
