  1. I was referring to the part about the rebuild being fucked if he was still on the team in 2 years. I though that was obvious. There's a lot more that hinges on the rebuild than a backup catcher.
  2. How is Maldonado's defense? I feel like I read someone talking about how good he was (may have been someone else) in the comments of MLBTR. I can't remember if it was about him or not.
  3. That's a little extreme considering he would be a fine backup.
  4. And people thought we wouldn't add any veteran relievers for some reason.
  5. I keep going back and forth on it. I guess if the Mariners are still trying to compete, then it makes sense to rid as much of the deal as possible but then also, why deal Paxton?
  6. It all depends on their health. All their SP are ticking time bombs. It actually might be smart to deal one of them if they can get some good pieces for the system and try to add a SP that can eat innings at the back of the rotation.
  7. I think he wants to move him with the idea that they can get a few young MLB ready players on the roster. Kind of like the idea of the Indians dangling Bauer out there.
  8. Mariners are sending $60m in the deal as well. Honestly if the Mets suck this year, they have some nice trade chips (Diaz, the starters depending on their health, Conforto if he bounces back) in the summer time or even next off-season if they do decide to blow it up. And Cano being paid down that much could even be an asset.
  9. You can sort of look at it as 2 separate deals. The first as Cano for Swarzak and Bruce and the second as Diaz for the rest of the deal. The only thing that doesn't make sense about the deal is that the Mets are more towards the rebuilding side than competing. There was no way it was going to be Cano and Diaz for nothing though. On the Mariners side, there were reports that they did explore a bunch of scenarios with other teams, separate players and packages and I guess the Mariners felt the package they got from the Mets, even including Cano, was the best choice (granted, it is early in the off-season). Personally from the Mariners perspective, I would have pushed hard for a Cano for Bruce, Swarzak, Cespedes deal. Get out of some bad money sooner and trade Diaz in a separate deal.
  10. Well not get bit back it but keep it in the first place I believe.
  11. They've been having a lot discussions about all their players including some that saw combined packages of players so they might be further ahead on other possible deals. I do agree though that it does seem unlikely.
  12. Weird deal for 2 teams that should be rebuilding.
  13. You can literally break it out as 2 separate deals and it looks good.
  14. I think they have to at least offer that minimum when they exchange arbitration numbers during that process. However, agreeing to a deal before tomorrow is not arbitration. No reason they can't agree to a lower number. Literally the same thing as non-tendering and re-signing a player.
  15. The Mariners might as well trade Cano and Diaz in separate deals if they're going to add money for Cano and take on another bad contract.
  16. Yep. You can almost look at is as 2 separate deals in a way. Cano's salary dumped to the Mets and then Diaz for two top prospects.
  17. I kind of had a feeling that he could go back to the Nats since he doesn't seem to have a big market. Especially with their rumored extension of 10 years,$300m. Once you're willing to go that much, you might as well offer a bit extra AAV per year with another year or two added to the deal. Good starting point for negotiations for sure.
  18. To be getting 2 of those prospects, I wonder how much money the Mariners are eating.
  19. Yeah they could always re-visit the idea of dealing him in the summer or next off-season. They also might net themselves a good trade chip in Diaz as well for a later date.
  20. Outside of the off-field issues, he's not that good of a player and has back issues. No thanks.
  21. So are the Mariners rebuilding or do they plan on re-tooling and plan on using the money in other areas on the field? I would assume trading Paxton and a great closer would signify it I guess.
