  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 05:20 PM) Do you agree with me that because of this, careers are going to be shorter in the future and good luck compiling Hall of Fame numbers if you are a ballplayer? Do you at least agree with my premise that it's going to be VERY HARD or at least much harder for players to put up Hall of Fame numbers in the future with a changing mindset regarding age? Only for the counting stats that people aren't putting as much significance on anymore.

  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 03:12 PM) The fact Moustakas can't get a good contract at 29. He's not a superstar but he's above average player. The fact that I sense a general vibe that Abreu is "too old" to get excited about and won't produce through the length of even our next WS window. Opinions like that. It's not that people/teams think players suck after they're 29. It's just that no one wants to pay for their mid/upper-30s years.
  4. Doing a little more thinking about it, if his price comes down enough, the Orioles could actually be a fit with Machado moving to SS. Beckham could move back into a bench role.
  5. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 02:22 PM) aka, us next year or the year after.... I love me some White Sox and I want to believe in Machado or Arenado, I'm just not hopeful. Same.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 02:18 PM) Bear with me please. Jake Burger is 21 not projected to be a big leaguer til he's 24. The new line of thought is you are washed up after your age 29 season. So Burger has five seasons to do something in baseball. Interesting. The way this is going nowadays, not many ballplayers are ever going to compile Hall of Fame-ish numbers. Players aren't going to be getting started til 24 or 25 minimum and will be considered expendable at 30, 31. How did we get to this point there's such a small window for baseball players? Every ballplayer should be furious at the age of analytics. Killing their checkbooks. According to?
  7. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 01:56 PM) I get this, but at the same time ... dry powder this year might be a hell of a lot cheaper. I feel like teams have saved their cash for next years' FA market. So maybe for a complete guessing game..... What do you think Moustakas gets on the market next year if he takes a pillow contract this year? Maybe next year he gets the 5 year deal at like $75mm (15mm average). If that's the case, I don't see the issue of taking a shot at 4yr/44mm this year when the Sox have been historically really bad at plugging 3B. My other issue is I really don't trust Yolmer -- and that's coming from a really pro-Yolmer guy since like 2015 (also coincidentally after his best year in the majors). Yolmer types are better suited as super utilities or as #9 guys on teams. You can have one MAYBE two yolmer type guys on your team as starters if you're really actually serious about playing for a championship. (This is where WAR arguments are always brought up -- I get he had a good WAR last year) If he goes back into free agency a year, he would be consolation prize to those teams who need a 3B and didn't sign one of Machado and Donaldson. And if he takes a 2 year deal, he's a consolation prize for anyone who doesn't sign Arenado.
  8. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 09:26 AM) Great signing for the Mets at that price. Have to wonder where Moustakas ends up now. There are no obvious fits left except maybe the Yankees, but it seems likely they'll stick with Andujar to start the season and upgrade at the deadline if necessary. Maybe the Phillies? 1-year pillow type deal with the Yanks maybe? Dude would drop 40 bombs in that ballpark with that short RF. Also help balance out the lineup.
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 09:49 AM) Has David Wright officially retired yet? Seems like every year he is trying to make a comeback and the Mets let him think it’s gonna happen Dude has had multiple back and neck surgeries. I would have thought by now the Prince Fielder route would have happened.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 08:18 AM) 1b: Adrian Gonzalez 2b: Asdrubal Cabrera 3b: Todd Frazier ss: Jose Reyes The Mets are locks to win the 2012 World Series! lol can even add Bruce and Cespedes to that.
  11. I really hope that Mets team can stay healthy this year. They were fun to watch a few years back.
  12. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Feb 5, 2018 -> 08:01 PM) #Mets in agreement with free-agent 3B Todd Frazier on two-year, $17M contract, sources tell The Athletic. Pending a physical. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/960690951982379009 Always liked this fit. He has to be better than anything they've had at 3B the last few years.
  13. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Feb 5, 2018 -> 02:10 PM) Well, Harrison was about 35 in the original movie and Billy Dee Williams is about 5 years older than Harrison. The new actor playing Solo is about 28 and Donald Glover is about 6 years older than him. So you could say it's set around 7 years before the first movie. The actor is 28 but that doesn't mean the character has to be.
  14. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Feb 5, 2018 -> 12:59 PM) The MLB The Show 18 trailer featured, by my count, 0 White Sox players- but don't worry, a solid 75% of the video was Aaron Judge, Trea Turner, and Marcus Stroman. https://twitter.com/MLBTheShow/status/960558707846217731 Are you really surprised?
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 5, 2018 -> 10:45 AM) It will be interesting to see how long they will sit on him to get a price. From the White Sox discussion end of things, what would people think of a deal that started with Zach Collins as the top guy?q Too soon to make that type of move IMO.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 07:41 PM) On paper this is a miserable bullpen. Nate and Soria are very bad and they are the best of the bunch. Sign Holland or lose 105 games Wow completely forgot Holland is still out there.
  17. If hes offered the most money fo play 3B for a team, he will play 3B. Bet Greg's house on it.
  18. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 03:42 PM) This could turn out to be the worse bullpen in the history of the franchise. Trading David Robertson was nuts. Yes, trading a guy signed for one more year, a year your team isn't expected to compete is nuts. Pure insanity.
  19. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 03:00 PM) Something else to keep in mind is that our 40 man is currently full, so if it comes down to a NRI and a guy on the 40 and they are about equal, the spot will probably go to the guy already on the 40. Also I could definitely see us going with 13 pitchers for a lot of the year, because it will help protect the young arms as well as showcase more guys who we are open to trading. They could try to sneak guys through waivers when teams are making their cuts at the end of camp. If Rodon ends up missing time, that could be a 60-day dl stint. Same goes for anyone else who gets injured in camp (circles Charlie Tilson's name).
  20. QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 02:58 PM) I think with the way the game is going an 8 man bullpen is most likely, especially early in the season when they are still building endurance for the starters. Yeah and they went 3-man bench/8-man bullpen all of last year. It helps when you have the DH spot as a rotating spot (Davidson getting a chunk but can also play 3B and 1B while Sanchez sits or fills in at 2B/SS).
  21. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 02:25 PM) I don't really believe in spring training competition anymore. They start out with a 25-man roster, and if they stay healthy, that's who they go with. Just a guess, if healthy- L- Avilan, Cedeno R- Farquhar, Infante, Minaya, Jones, Soria Gomez or Rondon as the 8th guy. Somebody won't be ready to go on Opening Day though, and they'll end up using around 30 pitchers this season. Also, I don't think Germen got a big league camp invite. ? When the bullpen is this wide open, there is competition.
  22. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 02:03 PM) The White Sox have added a lot of interesting Non-Roster Invites and minor league guys to compete for bullpen spots. As of last week, I assumed the bullpen was pretty set with something like this: Jones/Soria/Avilan/Bummer/Infante/Minaya/Farquhar. A lot has changed since then. There are a few minor league signings that could very easily make this team. RHP Nate Jones Joakim Soria Juan Minaya Danny Farquhar Gregory Infante Chris Beck Dylan Covey Connor Walsh Michael Ynoa Thyago Vieira Jose Ruiz Gonzalez German Rob Scahill Jeanmar Gomez Bruce Rondon LHP Luis Avilan Xavier Cedeno Aaron Bummer Jace Fry TJ House Brian Clark I believe that Nate Jones, Joakim Soria and Luis Avilan are all locks for the bullpen. I could see any of Scahill, Rondon, Gomez, and Cedeno displacing someone from above. Vieira and Ruiz will be given a shot as well. If I had to guess, I would think they'll try and send down the "prospect" types and keep as many veteran flip types as possible even though that means creating roster spots. I could see this for Opening Day (Yes it's way too early) RHP Nate Jones RHP Joakim Soria RHP Jeanmar Gomez RHP Bruce Rondon RHP Juan Minaya LHP Luis Avilan LHP Xavier Cedeno. This allows Sox to send Aaron Bummer, Jace Fry, Jose Ruiz and Thyago Vieira to Charlotte for a 1/2 season if necessary. Obviously these veterans could all suck in spring training but I would imagine that we see a couple of them break camp with the major league club. What do you guys think? I could see an 8-man bullpen depending on what the bench looks like so you could even add one more.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 01:36 PM) I'm just trying to use the same standards regarding Avi and Abreu as Hosmer and Manny. For instance except for Hosmer's defense, Abreu looks like the better employee. Avi and Manny are about the same age and one is considered a god and the other a blah. Not a single person on this site would argue Hosmer being better than Abreu so idk where that's coming from.
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 12:28 PM) What about Manny Machado's stat line last season makes him worth all the money he's going to get? If he has an off year it should be interesting to see the excuses of fans still wanting to pay him 30 mill a year. Last year .259, 33, 95 RBI. His OBP .310 with 50 walks against 115 strikeouts. Since everybody's talking Avi's BABIP, what does Manny's suggest for this year? Decline? Or he's going to be great? I mean I like Machado's traditional stats OK enough. .259 is blah. But at a similar age, Avi hit .330 with 18 HRs, 80 RBI. 33 walks, 111 Ks. Avi's BA was much higher, Manny's HRs and RBIs greater. Manny had more than 100 more at bats. Hosmer, who is considered a god and about to make 20 mill or more year hit .318, 25 HRS, 94 RBI, 66 BBs, 104 Ks. He's about to enter his age 28 season and wants 8 years. Abreu hit .304 with 33 HR, 102 RBI and .354 OBP with 35 walks, 115 Ks and he's entering age 31 season. Arguably he's better production than Hosmer only 3 years older. You're only looking at one year's worth of data....and even then, his second half was a lot better than his first half, even with a bad September: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...mp;t=b#all_half
  25. QUOTE (Sarava @ Feb 2, 2018 -> 12:22 PM) For starters - it looks to me like he has 2 years left on his deal? So we're conceding that they aren't even trying for a free agent in next year's big free agent class? Also, even if it were off the books, the money is still spent. $40 million is still $40 mil. It's going to eventually come out of something. The Sox don't have an infinite amount of money to spend. Why would this be the case? Payroll would still be low.
