Rating the Rebuild: Completed Year 1 Edition
Bob Sacamano replied to chitownsportsfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:54 PM) The rebuild is off to a good start. It has a long way to go. I'd have given it a 5 (at this early early stage) but a.) did you see our record this year? b.) have you read the posts here? Some well respected posters in the last couple days have expressed some doubt regarding Burger, Rutherford, Rodon, Fulmer and during the season expressed concern about Lopez and TA. Also to have a great rebuild we're gonna need a bullpen someday; we're gonna need a DH, etc. Hence, 4 (AT THIS TIME). Why is my position so offensive? Cause I haven't drank the koolaid yet?? Be patient. My grade can go up. We're rating the rebuild right now. Our record should clearly factor into a discussion about the first year of a rebuild. Because that makes sense lmao -
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 4, 2017 -> 05:59 AM) Uh...I don't think there's very many people, if any, that didn't think this. And it wasn't Ventura's fault that a lot of the guys "who looked good on paper" sucked. Clearly Adam LaRoche's inability to hit was Robin's fault, duh.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:45 PM) Maybe they had a decent manager to work with the stars. Just a thought. Yep. Has nothing to do with the fact that they are just better teams. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:44 PM) You guys all love the Sale trade. A small percentage of us Sox fans think Sale and Q were a pretty potent 1-2 to head a pitching rotation and only a lousy manager in Robin prevented some pretty good success. We had some pretty good ballplayers on paper during the Sale/Q era. Hopefully the Sale trade will fuel a nice rebuild; we shall see. Are you f***ing serious? Only a "small percentage?"

QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:08 PM) Interesting topic.. If we do a draft we will get less good players coming.. Abreu, Cespedes, Moncada, Otani, aand others wouldn't come if they were just going to get the 1st overall pick money.. It's interesting. I'd love a draft but if they do that I think you lose out on lots of top talent.. Well, they could cut it off at some age (say like, 23 at the oldest). For example, a 27-year old Abreu wouldn't be restricted by it.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 04:00 PM) How does the Player's Union feel about that? I'm not sure but I know players would love it. I base that off of the criticism some players had for the system when Moncada signed for $31.5 mill while top draft picks are signing for significantly less.

QUOTE (yesterday333 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) I wonder if Rutherford had come over and hit .300 with some power if people wouldn't be so disappointed with the yankee deal. I really like Tito Polo so I don't hate this trade very much.At the time of the trade yanks fans were really upset they gave up Polo so that says a lot to me. And if Rutherford turns it around next year it will be a great trade. I gave the rebuild a 10. Right now we have so much potential that guys a year ago I really liked are after thoughts. There has yet to be a move I hate, and most the moves got more than I thought they would. Plus the signing of Robert... This -
MLB needs an international draft. And make it so the kids have to be at least 18.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 11:54 AM) It becomes really important the distinction of if he is under the international signing rules or a true free agent. If he is under the international rules, we have zero chance. Yeah if that's how the Red Sox signings were handled, I would imagine this is the same.

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2017/...epublicans.html This is f***ing awful. Glad they canned her.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:37 AM) So I actually went back and searched the previous case. The Red Sox prospects did count against the international caps when signing with their new teams. I am not sure if playing in the US makes any difference or not as the most important thing is that neither player would have been union represented at the time of their release, so I don't know if Maitan playing in the US will make a difference or not. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/...om-Boston-.html Makes sense if this is the case.
-
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 10:05 AM) Guys, Sox can't sign him because of the Robert restrictions. I believe they can't sign anyone for over 300k until 2019, IIRC. There is no way they aren't going to have him subject to International Pool money There is a really good chance that he won't be an amateur foreign signing though so it wouldn't fall into the same category as signing a Robert or a Moncada.
-
QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Oct 3, 2017 -> 08:15 AM) Let's do a Soler type sign.. 7 years, 30 million.. If he does become a FA How does this work with a 17-year old free agent? It makes sense with draft picks and when international free agents come over as amateurs since the amount of money is just a bonus but I'm not sure how this works here. Say if he signs the same deal Soler signed: does that go in effect right away or when he comes up in 3-4 years?

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 10:04 PM) https://theathletic.com/116743/2017/10/02/r...igning-scandal/ Braves also had a deal with a 14 year old for 2019 class. This is quite the slippery slope if true. The majority of teams have agreements for guys already in 2018, 2019, and 2020. It's the nature of the international market. This could get really interesting. keithlawVerified account @keithlaw Following More Related: There are int'l kids who can't legally sign until July 2nd, 2020, who already have verbal agreements with teams. This is SOP. JJ CooperVerified account @jjcoop36 Following More JJ Cooper Retweeted Ken Rosenthal If coming to agreement with players before they turn 16 becomes something MLB cracks down on, very few teams would avoid getting caught up.JJ Cooper added, Hmmm...is this story the tip of the iceberg?

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 09:53 PM) Is there anything actually behind signing this guy or is it just baseless wishful thinking? Considering everything just released about the situation earlier today, wishful thinking.

What do you take from the 2017 season?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 03:24 PM) How could ANYBODY enjoy one iota of Holland, Pelphrey, Shields, those relievers. Insulting to me as a fan. I listed many positives in my post BTW. That doesn't change the fact it was a horrible, embarassingly bad season, one of the worst I've had as a Sox fan, simply because I couldn't watch so many games cause of the rotten players dotting the roster. I enjoyed this season 100× more than the previous seasons of "going for it" and sucking. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 02:48 PM) I'm not a "rebuild guy" so I realize my post will be different from most. Please let's not start a big argument in respect for what's really important (the Vegas tragedy). But you asked. ... I thought it was a miserable season. As a fan I was insulted and irritated that we had to trot Pelphrey, Holland and Shields out there as three starting pitchers. They were disgustingly bad and insulted me as a fan. I mean if they were trying to tank, fine, but those guys were embarrassments to the uniform in terms of performance. As far as other negatives ... I feel like we had about 5 bullpen pieces "almost" as bad as the above mentioned starters. Disgusting bullpen. The positives for me are different from some of you. I appreciated some key hits this season from Avi, Davidson and Abreu. I especially enjoyed Avi's season, which was splendid. And I absolutely loved Abreu's season. Also as much as I hated Dunn, I did like Davidson. I felt like he did the uniform proud as a rookie. Some of his blasts were absolute bombs. I also liked watching Moncada and feel like Tim Anderson showed well the last six weeks. I disagree with some of his hitting approach but enjoyed his hitting the last month and a half. Enjoyed some of the performances of our young starters especially Rodon. In short, I loved Abreu, Davidson and Avi. Hated a bunch of things. This season is only "miserable" if you don't actually understand what's going on. So many positives this season. Sucks you can't enjoy it. -
Great timing of this...watch out teams interested in Otani.
-
Shohei Otani is likely coming to the USA
Bob Sacamano replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Sep 29, 2017 -> 09:16 PM) Not every team was able to bid on Abreu either, some big players ( Dodgers, Yanks, Red Sux) were out, much like Robert. Plus the Sox had a very strong connection with Cuban players. Otani is a very different situation from Abreu. This explanation is inaccurate. Abreu wasn't a restricted amateur signing. -

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) Sam PanayotovichVerified account @spshoot Expect a White Sox injury announcement within the hour. Pretty important piece of their future. I literally just told someone earlier that it would suck to find out Rodon is going to miss all of next season with some kind of injury.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 12:35 PM) Yeah, I don't buy the Collins thing. Maybe they meant #1 given their draft position, but if they had the #1 pick, they wouldn't be picking him. Yeah this is what I'm thinking too.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 12:25 PM) How good would Houston be with Rodon and Bryant in their fold? MIA Rodon?
