White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 02:38 PM) Until this came up, I have never read one post on this board discussing the advantages of trading prospects for prospective free agents to better position you to sign them in a year. Not when the Sox were trying to win, when it would at least make a little sense, and certainly not during a rebuild and a season where they aren't going to win. Because of the news connecting the Sox to Machado. No one really thought about it until it became a realistic possibility (Sox trading for Machado that is). It's pretty much just figuring out why.

Hector Rondon to Astros
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 02:20 PM) I think Nate Jones will close. Until he gets hurt at least. Pretty much the one thing we can guarantee about any player on the team next year.

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 01:09 PM) It also increases the cost of an Abreu extension. The deal is very similar to the Edwin deal.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 01:08 PM) What were the market dynamics at that time? Who else was involved in the bidding? How much extra did the Mariners have to offer? Found an article that the Yankees highest offer was 7/8 years at $175 mill and he signed for 10 years $240 mill. https://nypost.com/2013/12/12/robinson-cano...-seattle-intro/

Angels sign Zack Cozart. Should have done that before the Kinsler move and had him play 2B.

2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 12:31 PM) Jon Heyman @JonHeyman Sources: phillies agree to deal with Carlos Santana Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal now Source confirms: Carlos Santana in agreement with #Phillies, three years, $60M. First reported: @JonHeyman. Glad a team that could be interested in Abreu didn't sign him (Red Sox, Cardinals, Rockies, other?). Hopefully Hosmer signs with the Padres as rumored.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 12:31 PM) I'm much more ok with that example. For sure. But Cano also might be a relevant example in another 3-4 years.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 12:27 PM) Robinson Cano has actually outplayed his contract so far with the Mariners. He's been worth more than what he's being paid. That could turn around in the next few seasons, but so far that's not the issue. The issue was that the team signing him wasn't competitive with him, and convinced themselves they could be incorrectly. I was just referring to if we're going to be a team that spends that kind of money on a player, I'd gladly spend it on someone who won't be up 30s/40 when it's at the end. I just used Cano as an example. Pujols is another one.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) Yes, I have noticed the teams that pay the most money sign the most and best free agents. Eventually, the Sox need to be one of those teams. And I would hope it would be on a player that is a 26 year old free agent than one that is at least 30 likes the M's did with Cano.

I have so much on my plate at work right now but it's so hard not to check this site.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 11:21 AM) If you're locking him up for 10 years 300+ million there's no opt out. It would probably be a dealbreaker for me. Having an opt out at say 28 would be brutal. He'd almost assuredly take it and would leave the Sox holding all the downside risk on the deal and none of the upside. These opt outs are poison pills. There's no way they'd sign him then. Yankees love giving out those opt-outs. I wouldn't mind giving him one after his 4th and/or 5th year (which would be after his age 30/31 seasons).

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) Left out of a ton of this conversation is whether it is a good idea for the White Sox franchise to pursue a free agent like Machado, who is predicted to end up with a $300-400 million contract over 10+ years. We all would love to have Machado, but I really wonder if it is in the club's best interest to sign a player to mega money for 10+ years, full NTC, multiple opt outs, etc. It looks like a great idea now, but paying a player $30-40 million when he is over ago 30 might not look so good. Thoughts? I have a lot more interest in signing a 26-year old star at 10 years as opposed to the 30/31-year old stars at 10 yeras (Pujols, Cano...I'm looking at you).

All I can say is Orioles really f***ed up by extending Davis lol should have thrown money at Machado like 2-3 years ago.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 11:10 AM) I think the Dodgers would be more inclined to go after Harper. Didn't you hear that he's already signing with the Cubs because he's friend with Bryant, owns a Bulls hat, and has a dog named Wrigley?/green

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) Really, the Dodgers, with Turner at 3b and Seager at SS, are going to be after him? Seriously, where would he play? Hypothetically they could move Seager to 2B. Really would not put that past the Dodgers.

I like discussing this as we have nothing else to talk about right now but holy hell please make a decision already, O's. We're all just repeating ourselves.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 10:50 AM) Sure if the Sox want to pay top dollar. Stanton to the Yanks was bad for the WSox as it made Machado more likely for them instead of Harper. We're talking about if the Sox matched the top offer (or even went over) and then tried to sell him on other reasons (culture). You're arguing he wouldn't accept due to a s*** record and awful bullpen yet if he is a free agent and had no experience here, he suddenly wouldn't see that?

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 10:44 AM) There's not a single reliable pitcher on this roster right now. Could possibly have the most unstable starting/relief group in the majors at this moment. But don't worry, I'm sure Manny will love the culture on a team that blows leads late due to its minor league bullpen Well then for all the hopeful people who automatically write him into their 2019 dream lineup, I guess they have no hope either then.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (yesterday333 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 10:41 AM) To me this is saying we will be willing to at least match anything somebody else is willing to give. Yeah and then hope his year here puts them over the top.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
Maybe the White Sox do fully intend to top or at the very least match any offer he receives? If he has the same offer in hand, he could choose to stay with his teammates and friends he makes here for a year. Remember that payroll will be low for a while. Also remember, we're talking about the same team that would NEVER rebuild or NEVER spend $60 million on a teenager.

QUOTE (Sockin @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) I think he ends up with the Cardinals if he's traded at all. If they are in on him they have no reason not to try to top our offer. There's too much chatter with us to end up with him IMO. Same. They've been linked to Donaldson for months it seems. Might as well pay a little extra and get the better, healthier player.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:16 AM) Anyone in a weird in-between where they don't want this deal to happen but also love baseball trades and so you find yourself rooting for a trade even though you dread it? Anyway. Can the cards just please take this to the finish line? Yeah this is how I feel lol if it ends up being a lot more reasonable than we expect, I'll be fine.

Hector Rondon to Astros
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/941689422109659136 Dang. Pretty sure we are only going to go after the bullpen scraps left in january. It was reported the other day that teams still in contention were after him. Figured we had no chance if that were the case and apparently it was.

Is Contention Upon the White Sox earlier than expected?
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:01 AM) This was a 95 loss team that has added Wellington Castillo. Fulmer won't be as good as he was his last 3 starts. Pretty good odds Giolitto won't be as good as his starts, considering his ERA in AAA was about 2 runs higher. They still suck. Many growing pains are still in store. Yeah everyone seems to think these guys are going to come up and hit and pitch great right away.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 15, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) Cease is a guy I would hesitate to toss away in a trade. He has dealt with injuries and needs to build up his innings, but his stuff is legitimate mlb quality. He's a player I could see us regretting dealing too soon and could be primed for a breakout with his plus plus fastball and plus power curveball. If he can't handle starting he certainly has the stuff to be a setup man or closer. Dunning is a guy who profiles as a solid #4 starter in the majors who can eat a ton of innings for you. That is still a valuable player. I actually didn't mean to put Cease there. I meant it as just Dunning.
