If the Marlins trade Yelich, I really hope Ichiro is at least brought back as a semi-every day player.

Rule 5 draft preview
QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 03:10 PM) I really don't see why we wouldn't take 2 relief pitchers.. Why not.. If one doesn't work he goes back to the original team.. Not a big deal. There's some talent here and we have 7 open relief pitcher spots lolll Exactly. Plenty of wide open competition. I would actually be shocked if they didn't take 2 players in the MLB portion of the Rule 5 draft.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 03:04 PM) That would be a very smart plan. All of the NLW ballparks are huge so defense goes a long way. Yeah and Span and Pence were both brutal out there. They need guys who can cover ground in their own ballpark.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 12:42 PM) Did you know Harper owns a Chicago Bulls shirt? That can't be a coincidence. He was hanging out with Kris Bryant, a friend from the same town he grew up in! And has a dog named Wrigley!/green

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:45 PM) Aren't the Giants linked to Cain and Bruce as well as McCutchen? I kinda doubt they would be interested in Avi. And have made an offer to the Reds for Hamilton apparently. They could potentially pull off a deal for Hamilton and sign Cain for RF and greatly improve the defense in the outfield.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:48 PM) Jon HeymanVerified account @JonHeyman 1m1 minute ago Marlins are regrouping now and plan to talk to Christian Yelich about how he feels about staying. He’s frustrated to see 3 best friends/top players go. So he may say he wants to go, which may trigger trade of him, too. They could wait until the deadline too. Or next off-season.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:40 PM) Yawn. I'm bored. Yeah. That one Winter Meetings where there was like 20 trades and then the Meetings last year spoiled us. It's the last full day and there's been minimal action.

Rule 5 draft preview
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:41 PM) Nestor Cortes just seems like one of those guys who can end up producing if given an opportunity. He's not that big, his stuff is not great, but it's hard to ignore how well he has produced. I'd take him. Thin on lefties.

Rule 5 draft preview
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:35 PM) I would like to see the Sox take a position player; they can take a pitcher in round 2 - always a lot. ONe that strikes me is Jason Martin of the Astros. He's only 22, hit pretty well in the Carolina League, and can play CF. Astros are the best in the biz re developing talent. I think Leury Garcia will get a nice bulk of time in CF (to start the year anyway). I don't really want a position player unless they deal Garcia in the next like 18 hours.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:15 PM) Not much in the SF farm that the Sox would want though. Arroyo? Ramos? Beyond them their system is scary thin on talent. Jordan Gonzalez? I have a feeling a team isn't going to need to overpay for Garcia or anything.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:08 PM) After Piscotty goes to the A's, there's still Yelich, McCutchen and the free agent outfielders available. Hopefully the Red Sox can lock up JDM soon. Would he DH mostly though? I thought I read that Hanley is moving back to 1B next season. IF JDM is in the OF, then Bradley is available even more.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:07 PM) I don't think these new owners are worse. It was a s***ty situation and new ownership has to start somewhere. They are in the process of building equity. The sale of the Astros was finalized in November of 2011. I don't believe their financial situation was quite as dire, but they cut $16 million from 2011 to 2012, and then cut $34 million from 2012 to 2013, as their ending payroll in 2013 was $29 million. To start to become profitable again, the Marlins needed to save money elsewhere, and that involves trading away guys who make a lot of money. It sucks, but it is what it is. That's true.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:03 PM) I thank the baseball gods everyday that we pulled the trigger on our rebuild when we did because we are now kicking it off with a f***ton of talent and should only endure two or three non-competitive seasons if things go as planned. The Marlins are easily looking at a 5 plus year rebuild based on what they got in their first three big trades. Rebuilding is always going to be far more risky/painful when relying on draft picks rather than semi-proven minor leaguers. Tigers and Royals also have a long road ahead of them. Great timing indeed.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 01:59 PM) Giants would still seem to be a fit. A's if Piscotty deal falls through. I'm not sure 2 years of Avi makes sense for the A's. Piscotty is signed for 5 years with an option for a 6th so I kinda get that one.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 01:55 PM) Different situations for sure, but I feel so bad for anyone that calls themselves a Marlins fan right now. From Fernandez' death, to completely gutting the team for what I consider to be a mediocre return (for now), the Marlins have become an embarrassment. They went from awful owners to somehow worse owners as well.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 01:42 PM) Yelich is not going to want to stick around during a rebuild. Having an unhappy player in the clubhouse would not be a good thing at all. Joel ShermanVerified account @Joelsherman1 9m9 minutes ago More Alcantara is big piece going to #Marlins in 4-player package, hear other 3 are minor leaguers of less ilk #Stlcards Wow, if Alcantara is the best piece heading to the Marlins I am calling right now about Yelich^ It will have 0 effect on his trade value as most teams would want him. He has no say in where he can go (like Stanton) so it doesn't matter if he says he wants to get dealt or not. He just has to go out there and play, whether he is happy or not. I doubt we read an article headlined: "Yelich unhappy with Marlins" in coming months. You didn't hear Q complain when he was in the same situation or any other leftover veteran on a rebuilding team.

White Sox have shown interest in Machado
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 01:27 PM) In theory, yes it should. Remember we are dealing with a fire sale Marlins organization right now and Yelich will be requesting a trade. They essentially have to trade him or they will have a very upset player on their hands. The Sox did not have to deal Eaton unless the return was great, I can't say the same for the Marlins and Yelich now as they have lost leverage. You know this how? He kinda just has to shutup and play honestly. I don't remember him being outspoken towards the Marlins like Stanton has like every year the past few years.

QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 01:32 PM) Wow. guess we know he isn't in the Marlins deal.. How many years did Ozuna have on his deal? 2 years of control.

Yelich should bring back a few legit prospects so I don't see the fit here. 25, 5 years left of control and more pop in his bat than Eaton. Like I said above, it takes more than that deal.

Cards will likely still be in the market for a CI whether it be at 1B or 3B (Abreu, Longoria, Donaldson and even Machado).
