  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) While this is technically true, but providing more signing money to the teams that are the most likely and competitive to sign him they are decreasing their chances each day. We are not suitors for the guy. I would like for them to keep $300k, make a nice pitch to him and at least try. Unless of course teams come to us and offer good prospects for our remaining space.
  2. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:28 AM) Not sure how much the sox have left in pool money but most they can give ohtani is 300k. So any money they have over that is free game. Exactly.
  3. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:18 AM) With the roster now at 36, figure Covey, Petricka, Putnam, Saladino, Willy Garcia, Hansen, May, Tilson, and Palka all could be in jeopardy. Non-tender Putnam, waive Garcia, Hansen and May (and Palka later in off-season if needed).
  4. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:12 AM) We just traded away more international bonus space, so I don't even know how much we have left. We got a pretty good prospect, so it may have been the rest of our pool. Yeah I'm not sure. It would be nice if we are sitting right at the $300k max we can spend haha
  5. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:12 AM) Does anyone actually know if he will be considered a FA or international amateur signing or are we just speculating? If he is a FA we have a chance and I'd imagine a good one.. If it's international bonus money we have no shot. It seems to be an international amateur signing which I agree with. You just pretend like he never signed with the Braves (except that he keeps the money).
  6. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 10:50 AM) What would stop a guy like Maitan from taking millions to play in the NPB for three years and then come back to play in the majors? That path would create a much larger earning opportunity and he could come back to a Tanaka like deal and not have to go through years of team control and the arbitration process. If he progresses the way that people think, a 23 year old Maitain could get a huge FA deal instead of perhaps entering his second year at the league minimum. He's currently 17, not 20.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 10:30 AM) Sucks for him. Not too bad since he can collect another $3 million for his trouble. Really not awful.
  8. Yankees interested in Jurickson Profar. My comment in another thread about the Yankees moving Castro (Angels?) doesn't seem so far-fetched honestly. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/yank...ar-rangers.html
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 04:06 PM) I hated Jake Peavy's personality and wonder if some of the worst parts of Sale's personality were things he picked up from Peavy. All talk. I don't think this is true at all. Wasn't it Chris Sale's former college coach that said he was always fired up on the mound?
  10. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 07:58 AM) I wonder if Maintan will want to sign with a team where he is blocked on the left side of the infield with young players or prospects. The Yankees come to mind where they already have a solid young left side that would be hard to beat out. I mean he's still 3-4 years away. Torres could shift to second or short when Gregorious or Castro is gone as well. I've seen a few people kick around the idea that they could move Castro, sign a 3B and have Torres open the year in the minors at 2B.
  11. As much as I am ok with the Narvaez/Smith platoon behind the plate, I'm kind of expecting some regression from Smith. I would be fine with Lucroy on a 1-year deal.
  12. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 07:24 AM) You really think they’d non-tender Gattis though? He was pretty damn good in 2016 and is already under control. Plus the DH spot isn’t really empty when you consider they have Gonzalez, Springer, Reddick, & Fisher all needing everyday playing time. Best case scenario they dump Gattis and he splits the role with McCann. Worst case scenario it’s a three-way time-share with Gattis getting some playing at 1B/DH. I just don’t see how either situation is desirable for a guy who should be looking for a big payday within the next year so. He really should go somewhere where he’s certain to get the vast majority of the playing time at catcher to rebuild his value. I mean yeah it's probably not a perfect without some pieces moving but they could make it work. Especially since Gattis is pretty much a platoon player at this point. I think if Lucroy wants to rebuild value, he will take a 1-year deal in Colorado. I also forgot they have 4 guys in the OF that should play every day. Man they have so much depth.
  13. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 07:08 AM) You think he finally reaches free agency as a 31 year old catcher and he’s going to take a part time role with a competitor rather do everything he can to maximize his long-term earnings? I don’t see that happening at all. If he can’t secure a nice long-term deal this off-season, he’ll probably take a one year deal that ensures him the most playing time in an offensive-friendly environment and look for a better payday next year. Why would he be a part-time player? If anything, it would push McCann into the empty DH spot they currently have. And could probably non-tender Gattis.
  14. Would be nice if one of the AL teams that can spend more signs him or Otani leaving the other one still available. You'd have to think Maitan would be more likely to take the largest bonus than Ohtani who is already forfeiting hundreds of millions of dollars already and is looking for specific opportunities (teams that will let him pitch and hit).
  15. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 08:46 PM) A's just traded their 1B away and plan to move Khris Davis to DH. So now they have an opening in the OF for a right-handed hitting corner outfielder, but I don't know if the trade signals that they are rebuilding or if they are happy with Matt Chapman and Matt Olson in the infield corners. It appears to be the latter. They like Chapman and Olson.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) Can we please get rid of the idea that this is Takatsu or Tadahito? This isn't a mediocre and older free agent that isn't attracting much interest in the US. This is quite literally the biggest free agent play in he history of Japanese baseball. It isn't to be enough to get by on watching video's on Kenny's PC. There is zero to indicate the White Sox are involved at all, including their own actions. If there was anything other than WELL THEY COULD BE to go off of here, I could respect it, but there is quite literally zero, and meanwhile a most of the rest of baseball is doing stuff. It's a lot more fun to talk about than the boring off-season we're about to endure. You keep doing you and we'll keeping talking Ohtani If you don't like us talking about how cool it would be to see him on our squad, then why even click in this thread?
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 03:45 PM) Yeah you mean the Hahn quote? That seemed to be the case, but nothing official. Hard to say. He'd be hard to keep on an MLB roster for a year, but maybe worth the risk for $100k? I don't know. Yeah I don't think anyone would take him just for him to sit on the bench for majority of a season. With pitchers, it's easier to hide them in the bullpen since you can pick and choose their spots a lot easier.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 03:42 PM) I guess one way to operate under the radar is to not go see or scout the guy you are trying to sign. Yep because the Sox haven't done that before or anything. Look, none of us are saying nor predicting he will come here. Just that there is a case to be made that a match could make sense for both he and the Sox and it would be dumb not to try.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 03:23 PM) It kind of does. It is kind of hard to sign a guy who you aren't trying to sign, especially when you have teams of every size and shape trying to give the guy anything he wants to come here. If the Sox really want him, they sure have a funny way of showing it. Who says they aren't trying? The Sox normally operate below the radar.
  20. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 02:21 PM) Supposedly there is a lot of interest between Alex Cobb and the Cubs. This match seems like a no-brainer IMO. Although, any discussion I've had with Cubs fans about what they think they're going to do this off-season, they say, "We're going to sign Cobb and trade for Archer" just because they hired the Rays' pitching coach lol the Cobb part I agree with. I imagine a deal for Archer starts with Happ and then one of Russel, Baez, Schwarber as Archer is very valuable to the Rays and they are not rebuilding.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 12:38 PM) Bob Nightengale‏Verified account @BNightengale 2h2 hours ago MLB wants to reach an agreement with the players union and umpires union by mid January on a pitch clock and pace of play procedures You step out of the box, you get a strike. Really unnecessary to have to adjust your batting gloves after the pitch you just took.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) James Fegan‏ @JRFegan 1h1 hour ago When asked to highlight an under the radar White Sox prospect people should pay attention to, Hahn named infielder Jake Peter No way they don't protect him.
  23. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 01:01 PM) Source? RaBBit, you know anything about our level of interest?
  24. QUOTE (Quin @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) Fowler, Luzardo and Lazarito is my big ask. Gotta start high for sure.
  25. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 10:48 AM) In the NL he can bat on days when he pitches, get pinch hit opportunities on his days off and maybe start in the field one game a week or so, because there's no way teams are going to want him making max effort throws from the outfield on the days right after he pitches and the day before he pitches. However he hasn't played in the outfield since 2014 so I doubt any team is going to have him do it anyway. In the AL he can DH 3-4 games per week without having to tax his arm in the field. That will add up to more opportunities to bat than he can get in the NL unless an NL team is willing to use him irresponsibly which I don't see happening. Enter Joe Maddon lol
