  1. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 08:07 AM) That's a good deal from the Pirates end though. The problem we have with that deal is it's so pitching heavy. Glasnow is a top 10 prospect in baseball. Newman is somewhere in 35-50 range. Keller is rising and will most likely be top 50. That's 3 top 50 guys for Q. That's a lot of s***. It's just not the package packed with position players that we are expecting. If they added KeBryan Hayes or another high upside type and possibly their Competitive Balance pick then that's a fair deal. Not sure I'd be super excited because of the lack of position players but Glasnow/Newman/Keller trumps anything the Astros can do. I would like this to be a final piece (but more like a 5th piece).
  2. QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) You would do this after having traded Sale and Eaton? Along with punting our first round pick to sign Bautista.
  3. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 06:19 AM) Today is the day everyone. Get ready Hopefully we don't see tweets or anything until at least 3 o clock. I need to be productive lol
  4. This basically confirms what we are all thinking: Pirates have an offer out but Sox want Meadows.
  5. QUOTE (credezcrew24 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 05:39 AM) Can anyone explain to me how Kevin Maitan who some claim to be a "Once in a Generation Talent" signed for 4.25 million while Moncada signed for 31.5 million the year before? Furthermore, highly hyped Cuban prospects such as Yadier Alvarez signed for (16 million) and Lazarito (3 Million) I would be very surprised to see Luis Robert sign for over 3 million due to the fact that I assume teams have already spent a good portion of there allocated money for international free agents. I may be in the minority and having no inside information I could certainly be horribly off base, but my initial observation is that the White Sox can offer a competitive amount of money without going over the spending limit and incurring penalties. Teams that are over their cap and will be penalized the next 2 years can still sign him if he is cleared before next signing period so he could still do very well.
  6. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 01:46 AM) Would be a huge pickup! Having Moncada and Abreu hopefully gives us an edge. Would have to be next signing period.
  7. QUOTE (Deadpool @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 06:16 PM) I definitely feel like Matt has earned it at this point. I also feel Bernstein is so difficult to mesh with, it might be worth just moving Matt over now. Unless they move Rozner to a permanent basis, which I would kind of dislike. I don't dislike Rozner, but the golf talk is awful. Agreed. He's a fine filler but that's about it. And Matt has earned it for sure.
  8. QUOTE (Deadpool @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 06:07 PM) I can't imagine anyone wanting to play 81 games a year in that stadium...and yet, it's still Florida. May not have been his choice if there wasn't any other suitors.
  9. QUOTE (Deadpool @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 05:30 PM) I lol'd. Really good stuff. I'm just not sure I'm ready for Mike North on a day to day basis and I can't imagine him working with Bernstein. I would expect Matt Abbatacola to be the guy. I like listening to Bernstein and Abbatacola to be honest. Boers was lame and just kind of agreednwith everything Dan says. Abbatacola at least push back if he doesn't agree.
  10. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 03:53 PM) He only pitched 65 innings last year. It's going to take him at least 2 to build up the innings to be a full time starter. Actually, 65 innings was in 2015. He only threw about 56 last season (2016). So yeah not very close at all. 2+ at best.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 04:14 PM) Mind me asking what the blip last night was? I think it was the Pirates blogger tweeting out that Rick Hahn went back to the Pirates to discuss an offer or something.
  12. It doesn't even make sense that they would want a left handed hitting OF when they've got Smith and Kim at the corners (unless they want one that can share DH at bats). I think they have Rickard platooning with Kim but Smith is also more of a platoon guy so he could really use a platoon partner. They way they operate, they will totally sign one of Crisp, Jackson, Francour, Raburn or Stubbs...and they'll somehow hit 30 homers out of said platoon lol
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 04:13 PM) So basically the article is showalter saying they want another LH hitter but then the reporter showing how terrible they were vs LH pitching  But either way Melky is a switch hitter, does not strike out much (which showalter mentiones) and is a terrible fit in basically every other way. lol after I replied to you I decided to check out the article and was like wtf.
  14. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 04:04 PM) His lefty stats aren't bad either. .289/.344/.789 Not world beating, but useful. I get that but was curious. He's definitely a good get for someone.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 03:57 PM) Ridiculous idea that for money reasons isn't a fit at all...on the other hand: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles...0109-story.html "Orioles manager Buck Showalter still seeking another left-handed bat in outfield" Melky vs LH .322 .352 .496 .847 I'm confused. If it says they are seeking another left-handed bat, why are you showing his stats vs Left handed pitching?
  16. God this thread needs a rumor/tweet whatever.
  17. QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 01:31 PM) Can we stop for a second to acknowledge this: The Yankees acquired Frazier for 2.5 years of a relief pitcher, and Torres for half a season of a relief pitcher. First of all, what an extraordinary strike of good fortune. Second, how strange that, a few months later, both seem off the table for four years of a starting pitcher!! Yes, the Indians/Cubs and Yankees were in different situations, but still. Should be able to give some better perspective on Quintana's trade value and market. Goes to show you how in it the Yankees are. I don't think they are involved as much as others on here seem to think. If I were Yankees, I'd try to sign some stop gap types and look to flip veterans (like Tanaka if healthy and good) at the deadline while allowing the kids time in the MLB to develop more. Then go add 2 SP next off-season (maybe go after Tanaka again since there won't be compensation on him) and keep all the young talent you've horded for the 1.5 years.
  18. QUOTE (Special K @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:52 PM) It couldn't seem more obvious that we need to get positional player talent back. We can't just assume guys like Basabe will succeed or even that Anderson is going to continue to do well (see Beckham's first year). Right now, there are two guys I think we can count on to produce - Collins and Moncada (and even they are not proven). Aside from that, 7 other positions need to be filled. We are pretty set on pitching prospects at this point. Need a position player headliner or don't trade Quintana because we have him for 4 more years. Cubs went all in on position player talent. Got lucky w/ Arrieta, and pretty pretty much bought the rest of their staff... Easier to do than trying to spend on a lineup: 9 (8 in NL) spots vs 5.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:55 PM) And I see no reason for Robert to settle for that when other teams can and will offer him so much more. The ONLY thing that the Sox MIGHT have is the ability to put him in the majors today and start his clock. But even with that, San Diego could offer him the same PLUS more money as they are already over the caps. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:55 PM) We are barely under. He's not signing for less than $1 million. Exactly. I wasn't suggesting he would take a significantly less deal. Just that it is the only way for us to be involved. Padres make a ton of sense since they already signed a lot of the best amateurs this signing period and are already over.
  20. It only makes sense if we don't go over our cap. Otherwise we should have just gone all out and tried to sign everyone this period.
  21. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) Several scouts have indicated he lacks fundamentals there, but he does make highlight reel plays so its just a matter of consistency. He was passable at 3B when the Red Sox put him there, but some believe he would be utilize his speed in CF. It will be very interesting to see what Sox do with him. Well they will obviously give him time at second. How long before they decided he should be used at 3B or in the OF is the real question.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) If that is the scouting report, I don't know why anyone would trade a #1 or #2 starter signed for 4 years at a bargain for a package headlined by a guy who might be almost as good if everything goes right. Well I think it would be because you are getting 2 additional cheap years of control (might benefit us more than someone on a 4-year deal) and 3-4 additional pieces.
  23. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 09:12 AM) Q and Santiago have to be the two randomest no ones to All-Stars in recent memory for a while due to their sustained success (outside of this last year for Hector). Love that we turned Santiago into Eaton and then Eaton into Lopez, Giolito and Dunning. Can't wait to see what we get for Q.
  24. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 08:44 AM) I have not seen any reports of talks advancing with any particular club. Astros and Pirates seem to be in the mix, with the Yankees lurking. I was just basing it off of that one blogger (who seems to have connections but not 100% certain) that posted about the Sox going back to the Pirates' offer. Remember, you won't always have info from the main guys about a deal being close until it's almost already done really.
  25. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 07:41 AM) Yep, we "sold high" on a closer for once (at the time) only to use him for a pitching prospect from blue jays already showing decline. Brutal. Coop will fix him! /green
