Man, we really needed a team like the Mets to overpay for McCutchen. And I mean like 3-4 really good prospects haha

Mariners acquire Drew Smyly for Mallex Smith, Carlos Vargas, and Ryan Yarbrough. How many trades has JeDi made now? -
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 02:49 PM) When do you realistically expect him to be a productive member of our team? How many years of control will we have over our core by that point? With a rebuild you want a core of players all hitting the majors in a short period of time. That's how you extend your window of contention. The way to "extend your window of contention" would be to have high-upside talent flowing through your system constantly. I do agree though that Maitan shouldn't be a centerpiece.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 02:45 PM) Watch Seattle jump into the Q sweepstakes with an offer of Smith/Vogelbach/O'Neill/Lewis. Would be nice if Houston had a division rival involved in the negotiations. He's on his way to Tampa. Not that I think he is any good.
-
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 02:33 PM) I'd prefer Meadows, Glasnow, Bell, but if it's not that, then I would think Keller or Newman (especially Newman) would warrant an additional fringy prospect thrown in. Or even their competitive balance pick.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 02:05 PM) I kept thinking mariners could be in on our bullpen pieces. But I doubt its us. Damn thats a good point.

QUOTE (Username @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) Probably unrelated, but the Braves just traded Mallex Smith and a bullpen piece for two class A pitchers. One of which is a pretty well-regarded lefty. Would make sense if they're about to unload some young pitching for a front-line starter, like a bunch of people have been speculating recently (Justice, Bowman, etc.). Then again, could be absolutely nothing. Edit: Crasnick is now reporting another trade is coming, but from the Mariner's side. Mariners have made a lot of trades this offseason.

Braves and Mariners make another traded. Braves receive: Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows (2 lefties). Mariners receive: Mallex Smith and Shae Simmons. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 10:50 AM) Not when you remember they depend on their farm system to feed their MLB team with low cost players due to a very low (comparatively) budget. They can't afford to lose multiple prospects, especially ones close to the MLB. They may gain Q but in a few years they will drop to a bad team again without the constant flow of prospects. They need to maintain a team with at least a chance to make the playoffs. i can see both sides. They do need Q to make a run at the WS. However, are they willing to take the chance of going back to being bad and broke with no prospects coming along. This is why they want to trade Mccutchen. They can get a couple of good prospects to replenish the system while trading others for Q. It wouldn't surprise me that if McCutchen is traded, a Q trade comes shortly after. This is why I said a deal seemed so unlikely with them from the get-go even if it made sense for both teams. Based on their fans' comments a few weeks ago, they felt the same way: that nothing would happen.
-
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 10:51 AM) They're actually not as bad as you think. I actually kind of agree. Especially if they get a 3B and Swanson hits.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 10:07 AM) Definitely. Signing Holland would also hopefully force Washington to get desperate and trade for Robertson. That's my dream as well. -
Anyone else think it is premature for Atlanta to have interest in guys they have to trade 4-5 prospects for? I feel like they should still be in the "hording as many prospects as possible" phase. Pretty crazy that their rebuild actually started what, 2 years ago? Then again, Q is under control for 4 years so I guess they can continue building around him hoping to be good for the last year or two of that deal.

Greg Holland wants 2 years with an opt out. Seriously, Sox should be all over this guy. Let him rebuild value and deal him off in July. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 07:51 AM) I'd see if there was any way possible to make him a LF or CF. He's running out of time. But if you could get him for nothing, it's not like he's blocking good prospects. He doesn't need a great arm. Can't see how his would be any worse than Juan Pierre, or Lance Johnson, or the future HOFer, Tim Raines. Coco Crisp has had a pretty nice career throwing flyballs back to the infield. It's a long shot, he's getting old to be a prospect, but for free or next to it, why not? Toss him in LF at AAA and let him learn. -

QUOTE (MnSoxFan @ Jan 11, 2017 -> 07:07 AM) We do not need Johnson at 2B, we want a good defensive infield, he does not fit that description. Agreed. I've changed my stance. His only hope is becoming a speedy, leadoff hitting LF but idk how many teams would waste their time on him. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 09:24 PM) Bastardo for $6.5 million isn't a terribly big deal to the White Sox but it could be a terribly big deal to the Pirates. Hell, he gets off to a good start and he could be movable at the deadline. Not large enough to send over a good prospect I would think. I read the other day (forgot where) that they were shopping both him and Watson trying to move one or the other. Doubt they would want to include him in a deal where they would have to include another prospect just to unload him.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 06:58 PM) They shouldn't, but if money is the only thing keeping the Sox from getting a guy like Meadows or Bell, I absolutely do it. Well I'm assuming its because money isn't the only thing holding up the deal.
-
QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 06:54 PM) I wonder if Atlanta would have interest in McCutcheon. They've been signing geriatric pitchers this winter. McCutch to Braves, Q to Pitt and we take two from column A and two from column B. We'd probably have to sweeten. The return for Atl, a reliever say, but it could break the stalemate. No room for McCutchen. Kemp Inciarte Markakis is their OF currently.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 06:59 PM) I'd take him for sure. Assuming Frazier is traded, Lawrie can shift to 3B and the Sox can give Johnson a half season tryout or whatever until Moncada is ready. Give me Johnson over Sanchez or Leury anyday of the week. Definitely agree with that last part. I like Garcia as a potential 25th man but that's not what Micah would be.
-
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 06:30 PM) Just saw on mlbtraderumors that Micah Johnson has been designated for assignment Anyone think we should bring him back? No. Not really enough at bats to go around between him and the rest of our options.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 04:19 PM) With his lack of positional versatility due to arm injuries, basically he'd be a backup 2b only, and if Frazier or Lawrie were moved you still have Sanchez filling the backup role and he (and Leury) are more flexible at handling multiple positions. He could work only in the case that you trade both Frazier and Lawrie and prefer him to Sanchez/anyone else on the scrap heap. Personally, I'd prefer him to Sanchez. But yeah he probably doesn't make sense on this team. -

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 04:16 PM) Trade them $10k, a bucket of balls and log of chew. That should do it. Honestly though, see no reason to not give Micah back in the fold. If there was an opening at second (there could be with a Lawrie or Frazier trade) I could see it. Maybe bring him back and see if he could become backup 2B/OF? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2017 -> 03:58 PM) One less prospect we have to hear about missing out on. Goes on the long list of "prospects traded away that never mounted too much." Edit: also one less 2B option for them. Do the Dodgers really have the same (if not, then similar) roster they did when they got knocked out of the NLCS? -
