  1. QUOTE (Special K @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:52 PM) It couldn't seem more obvious that we need to get positional player talent back. We can't just assume guys like Basabe will succeed or even that Anderson is going to continue to do well (see Beckham's first year). Right now, there are two guys I think we can count on to produce - Collins and Moncada (and even they are not proven). Aside from that, 7 other positions need to be filled. We are pretty set on pitching prospects at this point. Need a position player headliner or don't trade Quintana because we have him for 4 more years. Cubs went all in on position player talent. Got lucky w/ Arrieta, and pretty pretty much bought the rest of their staff... Easier to do than trying to spend on a lineup: 9 (8 in NL) spots vs 5.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:55 PM) And I see no reason for Robert to settle for that when other teams can and will offer him so much more. The ONLY thing that the Sox MIGHT have is the ability to put him in the majors today and start his clock. But even with that, San Diego could offer him the same PLUS more money as they are already over the caps. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:55 PM) We are barely under. He's not signing for less than $1 million. Exactly. I wasn't suggesting he would take a significantly less deal. Just that it is the only way for us to be involved. Padres make a ton of sense since they already signed a lot of the best amateurs this signing period and are already over.
  3. It only makes sense if we don't go over our cap. Otherwise we should have just gone all out and tried to sign everyone this period.
  4. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:21 PM) Several scouts have indicated he lacks fundamentals there, but he does make highlight reel plays so its just a matter of consistency. He was passable at 3B when the Red Sox put him there, but some believe he would be utilize his speed in CF. It will be very interesting to see what Sox do with him. Well they will obviously give him time at second. How long before they decided he should be used at 3B or in the OF is the real question.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) If that is the scouting report, I don't know why anyone would trade a #1 or #2 starter signed for 4 years at a bargain for a package headlined by a guy who might be almost as good if everything goes right. Well I think it would be because you are getting 2 additional cheap years of control (might benefit us more than someone on a 4-year deal) and 3-4 additional pieces.
  6. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 09:12 AM) Q and Santiago have to be the two randomest no ones to All-Stars in recent memory for a while due to their sustained success (outside of this last year for Hector). Love that we turned Santiago into Eaton and then Eaton into Lopez, Giolito and Dunning. Can't wait to see what we get for Q.
  7. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 08:44 AM) I have not seen any reports of talks advancing with any particular club. Astros and Pirates seem to be in the mix, with the Yankees lurking. I was just basing it off of that one blogger (who seems to have connections but not 100% certain) that posted about the Sox going back to the Pirates' offer. Remember, you won't always have info from the main guys about a deal being close until it's almost already done really.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 07:41 AM) Yep, we "sold high" on a closer for once (at the time) only to use him for a pitching prospect from blue jays already showing decline. Brutal. Coop will fix him! /green
  9. So if it is true (I take this kind of stuff with a grain of salt), then the Sox have an offer they like and are seeing if the Pirates can match it (or beat it)? Reminds me of Sale and Boston kind of.
  10. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 08:21 AM) Am I the only one who really really does not want a package centered around Glasnow? Depends on what the rest of the package looks like.
  11. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 08:04 AM) FWIW, the Pirates are looking to extend Jordy Mercer. This is pretty odd given that he's not very good, has two years of control left, and the Pirates have a high-end prospect who should be ready to take over at SS when Mercer's contract ends. Some speculation by rumbunter that such a move would allow them to include Newman in a Quintana trade. With recent reports that the Pirates are now holding onto McCutchen, I'm keeping hopes alive for a Quintana for Meadows, Newman, + deal. God I hope so. How good is Mercer's defense? They must like him enough to play him every day and bat him 8th.
  12. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 12:44 AM) If the Sox were able to get both Glasnow and Keller, they'd be so stacked with pitching that I'd hope they'd flip a couple to Colorado for Brendan Rodgers. Not sure the Rockies would. And any team with pitching prospect depth (Pit to name one) could just trade for Rodgers if they wanted to.
  13. Dodgers close to signing Jose Fernandez to minor league deal. Moving on from Dozier? Also, didn't realize he was still out there.
  14. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 8, 2017 -> 12:25 PM) I don't think they are interested in re-signing Arrieta, but that's just my gut. It won't be for lack of money though, they are already swimming in it and these ticket hikes aren't going to dampen demand one bit. Agreed. They may let Arrieta walk and sign one of the arms available next off-season instead
  15. Cubs aren't in a position where they need to deal their top prospects.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 8, 2017 -> 07:36 AM) I normally don't object to minor league deals, but this is a bad player, bad actor, getting older, who plays positions you have plenty of mediocreish guys you can look at instead. I would imagine this is a Rick Renteria deal from his SD days. Agreed. This guy is probably the backup MI for Charlotte and even then that seems a stretch. I'd be shocked if he's with the organization past Spring Training.
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 11:10 PM) It means next to nothing. Cabrera may not even get out of spring training. This. It seems like we have too much middle infield depth. Doubt everyone stays past Spring Training (minor league signings that is).
  18. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 08:57 PM) So, is this thing any closer to a resolution or is this dragging on until ST? Doesn't appear any closer to resolution. No idea when it will drag out until.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 04:59 PM) Houston will improve their rotation. It really doesn't hurt you in the standings ifyou get the pitcher at the Winter Meetings or a day before the season starts. I honestly think its plausible they open with their current rotation and add in June/July if they need to.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 09:31 AM) Beware of tweets that say "team X" are the frontrunners in a trade. Beware of tweets from Jon Morosi, who needs to spew verbal diarrhea on MLB Network for 10 minutes. It's all horses*** until it's actually done. This. Most of the time they need to fill time on TV or they have to write an article about something.
  21. QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 09:26 AM) Is there any chance Reed sticks at C? Since Reed has never caught before, I'm going to go ahead and say no.
  22. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 08:22 AM) I really think a deal happens with the Astros pretty soon. I'm going to predict a Martes, Tucker, Reed, & Laureano package. That may feel light to some, but Reed was a top 30 prospect just 12 months ago and Laureano appears to be criminally underrated. Short of the Pirates offering Meadows, I think I take that deal, although I'm pretty high on Tucker. I hope.
  23. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 08:27 AM) I am not enamored with the Astros prospects. My hope is that Hahn holds out for one of the Yankees elite prospects. Don't think the Yankees are going to move their elite prospects imo.
  24. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 08:06 AM) McCann and Gattis are going to catch more than you think...they have to. They let Castro walk and Max Stassi is their only other C and he can't hit a lick. C- McCann/Gattis 1B- Gurriel/McCann 2b- Altuve SS- Correa 3B- Bregman LF- Beltran/Gattis/Aoki CF- Springer RF- Reddick DH- Beltran/McCann/Gattis Gattis and Aoki are not going to keep Alex Bregman from playing. Bregman could even see a decent amount of time in LF while also filling in at SS and 2B when needed. That team has a lot of depth. Is it a guarntee that Springer is going to play center?
  25. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jan 6, 2017 -> 06:25 PM) Via Sean Sears on Twitter : "The #Astros are willing to part with Tucker, Martes, and Paulino for #Sox Jose Quintana, per source" Based on comments and tweets following, it looks like he has no idea.
