I imagine he'll make the team unless he completely sucks in Spring Training. He could probably opt out if he doesn't. I bet they'll bring in a few of these types of catchers on minor league deals.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2017 -> 11:50 AM) To me it will depend on injury, but reading the STL reports on his defense, he was considered the best OF defender they had. We have 3 plus-defenders with questionable hit tools in engel/may/tilson, maybe one pans out, likely none do. But I like Tilson at least as a consistent major leaguer. Yeah hopefully one can, at the very least, be a good 4th OF or even platoon guy.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 5, 2017 -> 12:33 AM) Joel Sherman made a point on MLB Now - the Yankees are coming up on a lot of players who will need to be protected while protecting the assets the currently have. There are ways of dealing with that given situation that allow you to maximize your long term value, but you lose current value. The Yanks look like a team ready to spend heavily going into 2018. They'd rather keep their current MLB value, so it follows that logic. I don't know much about the Yankees system other than that Torres, Frazier, and like Severino, but I know they have a good system and they have a strong need. Cashman is the longest tenured GM for a reason. (Sabean and Beane are both probably final decision makers, but they are not GMs. Cashman is) Yeah I've said this before and I'll say it again. I doubt Yankees are lookong to deal anyone right now. They can deal pieces in June or July (Tanaka, Holliday, etc) if they are producing and look to add a pitcher or two in free agency next off season. Edit: I'd love to be proven wrong and see them deal 4-5 guys to us lol but just don't see it.

How our current top 100 prospects match up with past years
Bob Sacamano replied to FT35's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 03:59 PM) Current mlb.com rankings. I expect Kopech to rise a bit. Lopez to stay about the same. Moncada will still be top 3. Giolito will drop into teens, most likely. My guess is Collins is closer to 50 than 80. I don't think they've updated that since mid-season. -
Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Bob Sacamano replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 02:36 PM) Whatever, I dont believe anything I read right now. Their will come a day when a rumor pops up out of nowhere like it always does which will then gain steam and BAM trade done all in one day. Exactly. I'm not reading into anything until something is done. -
Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Bob Sacamano replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 01:02 PM) Does the lack of rumors indicate that the White Sox have an air-tight, no leaks front office or is it simply because there is nothing to disclose...that no trade offers are pending and no negotiations are happening? I'm sure negotiations are ongoing. Not everything is going to leak. -
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 12:47 PM) Meh. RH has said this is going to take time. He is not going to settle on his 2nd best trade chip that has four years of cheap control. He just won't. He'll get what he wants this offseason, or wait until he does. I'm just saying it may be disappointing to some if they really do intend to move him before spring training because there were a good amount of people on here that felt the Sale trade was a player off (myself included). Granted, it'll still be a great deal for us but not quite what we expect it to be.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 10:23 AM) The best offer might be something that we've been expecting though. I guarantee you the Sox are asking for the sun and the moon but ultimately are fine with accepting just the moon in return. For example, Sox could be asking for Meadows, Glasnow, Newman, and something else. Meadows could be the sticking point. Sox may be fine with taking something like Glasnow, Bell, Newman all along though. Hope that makes sense. I'm just saying it may be disappointing to some because there were a good amount of people on here that felt the Sale trade was a player off (myself included).

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 09:50 AM) Interesting thoughts from Buster Olney on ESPN today. It's Insider so need a subscription but here's the Quintana portion: http://www.espn.com/blog/buster-olney/insider/post?id=15688 The Chicago White Sox could wait until after the start of spring training or even into next season to trade Jose Quintana, the best available starting pitcher. But evaluators with knowledge of the Quintana discussions say the White Sox seem intent on finishing a deal before camps open. The Pittsburgh Pirates could be the frontrunners for the left-hander, whose modest salary through the 2020 season make him perfect for Pittsburgh's budget. If this is true, we all may be slightly disappointed with the haul. If they're intent on finishing a deal before camp opens, they will end up settling for best offer.

Uh-oh...Harrelson wants to hold on until 2020
Bob Sacamano replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 09:28 AM) I dont get it either. Maybe I'm an easily impressed simpleton but there are hardly any announcers across of all of sports that I'm not entertained by. This is how I feel as well. I do enjoy Hawk in small doses and they definitely are different broadcasts. I enjoy both though. -
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 12:30 AM) To play 2B this year? Can't Saladino and Lawrie handle that? Or is he AAA fodder at this point? Probably the latter. Serving as depth.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 05:11 AM) Frankly, I'd rather listen to Harrelson hype all the young prospects than put up with Benetti questioning Stone over and over and not providing any of his own insight. Hawak can also tell you more from hanging around BP for a week of spring training than we'll get all season from some "voice" announcers. "He has the best swing I have ever seen in all my years in baseball." Yes, great insight. -
Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

QUOTE (HeGone7 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 04:49 PM) Some very good prospects that I anticipate the Sox have a crack at. Potentially franchise altering from what I have seen and read. A bad season should net us a Bryant-type hitter that this "firesale" and system severely lack. From what we've seen trade-wise, they desperately need to be top 2. Not quite there yet. Especially if certain guys are here for half the season or full season. -
Also logical landing places for Abreu/Frazier/Cabrera
Bob Sacamano replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 04:27 PM) Danks was almost forced because they were in first place and it felt like he could drag down the entire season. Melky, they have no compelling need to do anything one way or the other. No payroll crunch, etc. No rush to replace him with a better option, as the other two outfielders we roll out there will likely be much worse. I would still rather have the spot open so we can find out. If they are able to deal Melky after the corner OF/DH/1B market starts to dry up, I wouldn't be opposed to a Liriano-Tilson-Garcia OF. Or someone else who wins a spot. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 04:25 PM) And a worse defender and base runner. Melky will fetch a talented player or two, but they will almost certainly be highly flawed. Agreed. Would I like a top 100 prospect for Melky? Of course. But I think the guy(s) we get will likely be 25/26 year old pitcher(s) with control problems in the minors that they hope can figure it out in the pen. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 04:12 PM) Not only Saunders, but Rasmus and Rajai Davis too. Sox typically abhor eating salary...and nobody other than Liriano/Coats you could even conceive of giving his playing time to. In the end, Melky at $4-6 million (Sox might send $2 with) for 2 months is much more palatable than a full season commitment, especially with how his 2015 season went. They just ate most of Danks' $15 mill from last season and most of the $10 million given out to Latos,Rollins (both cut), and Jackson (missed over half the season). I wouldn't be shocked to see them kick in about $10 mill to move Melky because it is only for 1 year. -
Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Bob Sacamano replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 01:29 PM) I don't think a team like the Pirates can really afford to "gut their entire farm system" like a Boston or Washington could. I would guess they would try to restock it partially with a Cutch deal, but nobody seems willing to pay that price either. So we wait. Pirates could also deal Quintana (and anyone else: McCutchen like you said, Nova, etc.) to replenish the farm in 2-3 years if they wanted. -

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) Phil Rogers @philgrogers 28m28 minutes ago Idle thought: Could @whitesox land switch-hitting prodigy Josh Bell & Tyler Glasnow from Pirates in deal for Quintana & Todd Frazier? Phil Rogers @philgrogers 26m26 minutes ago @whitesox want Austin Meadows in Jose Quintana deal but Josh Bell also fits the need for young hitters w/big upside. Is this the first time we've seen for certain that this is who we want? Or do you think he's just assuming. -
Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
Bob Sacamano replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 12:12 PM) I see a variety of issues with the first tweet. 1) Bell & Glasnow for Q and Todd Frazier is not good value for the Sox. 2) The Pirates would never want to take on all that salary. They'd require the Sox to eat the salary. This would make it even worse value of a trade for Sox. Now if it was Q and Todd Frazier and all of Frazier's 2017 salary, then the return from PITT would need to be Meadows, Bell, Glasnow, and Newman/Keller. I doubt the Pirates want to gut their top prospects for just Q and Frazier, even though this is closer to fair value for Sox. I don't think he is suggesting a 2-for-2 swap. Just that they would be in the deal. -

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 12:25 AM) Personally, I don't see a role on this team for Lawrie if we can't trade Frazier this offseason (and Saladino is healthy). In such a scenario, I'd simply trade or cut him near the end of spring training. I'd have to think someone would take a flier on Brett at his reasonable salary. I agree as well. I'd be on the phone offering him to the Dodgers. A cheaper (in terms of money and prospects) alternative to Dozier. -

QUOTE (South Sider @ Jan 1, 2017 -> 11:05 PM) Forget the rumors, forget the tweets. The only thing that happens now is deals. It either happens or it doesn't. These days, my friends, are the dog days of the offseason. Sure, things will still happen, but it will be when you least expect them. I'm done feeding off of rumors. I've heard enough Q rumors. The next thing for me that will be even remotely interesting involving Q is a Q trade. If it happens, great it will mean the Sox felt that they got a fair price. If not, oh well that sucks I'd prefer if some team had offered enough for the Sox to deal him but they didn't, so consolation prize is having an awesome pitcher on your team. Agreed 100%. -

QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 1, 2017 -> 08:35 PM) I'm guessing this starts to heat up again tomorrow, right? Or are we still in the holidays? Guess it depends on what you mean by heat up. Do you mean negotiations just start to continue? -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 1, 2017 -> 08:04 AM) JFC, Chris Sale was traded less than one month ago, give me a f***ing break already. It's January first and people are talking about the rebuild failing already and it started 25 days ago. I would say it started in July with the negotiating of current player (and Sale) trades and the trade of Zach Duke (good thing we traded him when we did, huh?) -

Bob Sacamano replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 31, 2016 -> 02:19 PM) The price DOESN'T increase, though. Next year's free agent SP class is fantastic, and a bunch of those guys are going to be available at the deadline. You're (all) right that we shouldn't feel the need to move Q for a weak deal, but this is STILL the best opportunity to move him in the foreseeable future, so the goal still absolutely needs to be moving him now. And I'll reiterate again that his "value" has nothing to do with what Chris Sale or other comparable pitchers got in return -- it has to do with how many suitors there are and what those suitors are willing to pay. Every time a guy moves (like Sale) the market changes, because the highest bidder just left the room. Not necessarily.
