  1. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 03:59 PM) I get the feeling that Hahn and Co. do not want to be in the business of paying a mid 30's first baseman retail money like that. The only way I would sign him to an extension is if he takes a substantial discount to stay with the White Sox. 5/90 or 4/80 is not what I would consider to be a substantial discount by any means. Abreu is not getting any younger, and giving a 33 year old Abreu three more guaranteed years is not necessarily a wise decision. I am with Steveno89 on most every subject. YAY!
  2. QUOTE (WestSuburbanSox @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 01:43 PM) I am not sure I trust this front office to sign big name free agents. This rebuild would go a lot better if we get 3 or 4 stars from Jimenez, Moncada, Kopech, Hansen, Giolito, Lopez, Rodon, Cease, Robert, Rutherford, Adolfo, etc... and sign more guys like Wellington Castillo who can consistently deliver above replacement value at reasonable risk. We probably need 4 OFs, 5 IFs, 2C, and 5 SPs that are at a minimum worth 1 WAR. If we find ourselves 3 months out from a solid chance at the WS, great, pull a short term deal if you need to. But first, assemble a very deep team of solid players. It sounds like you're wanting to do what we had done the past 5 years.. Have 3 or 4 stars (Sale, Abreu, Quintana, Eaton) and then sign patchwork guys.. This doesn't work and we've proved it. I hope we don't fall into the same problems. EEEK
  3. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 11:18 AM) He won't be in the pen. That would put too much stress on his shoulder. He will need to be on a regular routine. I would think it's the exact opposite. Throwing 6 innings is more stressful than one inning two straight days. Rodon to me seems destined for the bullpen.
  4. At this point I would be fine with absolutely any position as long as they aren't picked because of their athleticism.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 10:00 AM) I would go out on a limb and say that the biggest free agent contract the White Sox hand out this off season has already been signed. agreed
  6. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 09:49 AM) That was my intention, sorry if I was unclear. I agree. I think something like 4/80 or 5/95 would get it done. I do not see the point one bit at extending him if it is going to cost that much.. Can someone give me a reason why extending a 33 year old 1st basement for 20 million makes sense? Just wait till his contract is up and extend him then if he is producing at 20 mil a year
  7. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) I doubt the Sox trade Avi or Abreu before Stanton gets moved. I am assuming that if he doesn't accept a trade by the end of the first day of winter meetings those teams that were interested will move on.. They'd have to.. At least the Cards would since they're respectable without him and can sign other FA to contend. The Giants I guess can keep waiting.
  8. I agree he isn't an amazing player. But there's got to be a point where his cost is worth losing a pick. Now to be clear, I too am not certain what I'd put that value at.
  9. I too don't hate the idea of adding Moustakas IF his price drops to around what we are saying here 5 years for 70 mil.
  10. QUOTE (FT35 @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 08:43 AM) Anyone think Avi could net Alex Reyes in a deal with the Cards? I don't think Abreu OR Avi could net Reyes.
  11. White Sox trade Abreu to the Cardinals for Kelly and Sierra
  12. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 04:48 PM) Why? Flaherty's numbers are a little misleading, as his 2.74 ERA in 15 AAA starts looks more pedestrian with a 4.10 FIP and 4.06 xFIP. His cup of coffee at the mlb level did not go very well either. He's still a quality prospect, but I see mid rotation ceiling for him. Piscotty I don't see us trading for as he was signed long term and is coming off a bad season. Bader is overrated in my book, as he really does not have any standout tools. He seems to be a guy that ends up being a good fourth outfielder on a contender, but I don't think he has the bat to be a corner OF regular on a championship team. I'm not trying to tear these guys down, but who out of these guys do you feel is too much for the Cardinals to sacrifice for an impact bat? I agree with all 3 of your assumptions with those players.. My problem is that all 3 of those with those projections are more valuable than 2 seasons of abreu. That's 3 major leaguers. I'd expect something like Flaherty and Bader and that's about the top end but not all three.. Hopefully I'm wrong obviously lol
  13. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 04:04 PM) http://www.stltoday.com/sports/if-not-stan...cbe99163c8.html This article seems to suggest something in the realm of Flaherty + Piscotty + Bader might be just short of what it would take from the Cardinals fan perspective. Personally I would want more in order to deal Abreu. If I am St. Louis I would be very interested in acquiring Abreu if the cost was only prospects. They have a glut of outfielders and Flaherty is expendable. No matter what kind of good stuff we are smoking there is no way you get that package for Abreu.
  14. Cards just signed Mikolas so now they have even more SP depth to trade from. Making Flaherty and possibly even Reyes now available. If Hahn could get Reyes he would have reached his "asking for an arm and both legs" assumption.
  15. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 10s The Angels have agreed to terms with infielder Kevin Maitan, who was made a free agent after MLB ruled the Braves violated rules in signing him. I wonder how much he is getting
  16. Of course the white sox are a forgetful team.. espn, ESP freaking N forgot that we even ever won a championship. THE WORLDWIDE LEADER IN SPORTS forgot that... Not one worker thought of us and brought it up.. It was embarrassing and it shows what people outside of the fan base think of us.. Oh well. I love us so that's all that matters
  17. If we did happen to trade Abreu, MAtt Adams would be the perfect signing.. Been a very good bat but has seemed to be bitten in the butt by bad situations.. Not much playing time in STL because they had Carpenter at 1B and not much in Atlanta because of Freeman.. He could be a big bat for an AL team that needs someone.
  18. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) I doubt Hahn needs to be truly overwhelmed. If Abreu was 26/27 years old with 3 or 4 years remaining on his contract then it would be a different story completely, but he's still a quality asset controlled for two seasons. He's valuable, but I would be astonished if a team parted with its very best prospects (depending on system of course) for him. The White Sox can ask for Devers, Benintendi, Rogers, etc. but they aren't getting those guys in exchange for Abreu. In order for any deal to actualize we need to start with a sky high price, and have the negotiations take us to a place where the price is still fairly high, but acceptable for the Abreu suitor. Abreu makes sense for the Astros, Cardinals, Rockies, Indians and Red Sox right now, just remains to be seen if they want to pay the price. My exact thoughts.
  19. QUOTE (Wanne @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 03:03 PM) Wow...great signing! MLB article states that Renteria was a big reason he decided to come here also. good to hear about Renteria
  20. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 01:50 PM) I know Flaherty is pretty good, but is Sierra at the level where that's a deal we can't turn down? Any second piece is going to have question marks. To get anyone as the second piece that we could immediately plug into the MLB would be a cant turn down deal. He has potential and is a great defensive CF. He's the second piece not first.. If you think that trade is light then people are going to get really upset if we wind up trading him and we see what we get. However, I hope I'm wrong
  21. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 01:41 PM) Flaherty and Sierra. I don't see how unless you're of the camp that doesn't want to trade Abreu regardless. I'd be surprised if we got a deal of Flaherty and Sierra for Abreu.. Seems too good to not jump all over
  22. This is outstanding. I was wanting to see if we could get him when the offseason began
  23. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 11:49 AM) I do think we can compete in 2019, but that's beside the point- I value his leadership more than most, I suppose. It's not just an on the field issue to me. We've had major clubhouse issues over the years and he has been vital to maintaining it That is just such a soft argument to me though.. You can sign a cheap leader if that's what you're worried about. Get me a good young prospect or two who have a legit chance to make an impact during our contention period.
  24. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 10:44 AM) Jason Martinez of mlbtraderumors had this to say: "Zamboni 5:44 Flaherty and Sierra get it done for the Cards for Abreu Jason Martinez 5:45 I'd say one of their top pitching prospects, one of their best OF prospects and maybe one low-level guy with high upside. So Flaherty/Sierra could be in the vicinity of what it would take." I'd prefer to swap Kelly and Flaherty based on organizational needs but that return would be absolutely outstanding.
  25. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 11:55 AM) I hope this brings other teams like the Rockies around with more depth in the system. Rockies are losing cargo and could move Desmond to outfield and open up 1st base They would be the ideal trade partner.. Give me Dahl please
