Draft Day Three - discussion thread, Tracker in OP

They picked none.

While not high school kids, Tyler Johnson, Skoug, and McClure are high ceiling players and most likely require going over slot. Abbott is unknown. I think much of the excess money so far will go to Skoug to be honest. I suspect we may have money to sign one more high schooler picked in the late rounds.

I've seen/heard on a number of different picks how much the analytics/trackman played a part in that particular selection. For those upset about the lack of upside/projection, I suppose this can alleviate concerns a bit.

Wake Forest is playing on ESPNU right now, if anyone wants to watch Sheets in action.

Hostetler said Sox were set to take some high schoolers early on that ended up getting picked elsewhere

I bet he's referring to Austin Beck

Would be interesting to know if they would have taken Adell or Burger...or Hiura.

Yea I would have loved to see how they ranked the "5 players" they had on their board.

Also found it fun to learn that Hiura was from my high school and Greene was from the same town as well. Santa Clarita valley represented hard core this draft.

"There was a time in the third round where we were targeting a high school guy and got picked," Hostetler said. "We got picked three different times on high school players."

Draft recap from White Sox.com noting their change in philosophy:

Interesting nugget:

Hostetler... pointed to 11th-round pick Will Kincanon and 14th-round pick Alex Destino as possible standouts from Wednesday

Cool, so we drafted a 50 year old. He is instantly old for every level.

Or did Scott mean great-grandson?

He's had like 8 ot 9 marriages..he might still have younger kids than that.

In the back of my mind I wonder if the Robert signing is forcing the team to try to save a few bucks in the draft by not picking the high dollar HS players, in general.

No that's not the case. I don't really think they saved much. It's hard to do so when picking 11th. I would think Burger gets something like $3.4 million. That saves about $800K. I bet they use the savings throughout to sign Kincanon and Skoug for overslot. Hostetler mentioned that they were likely going HS in round 3 and that player got picked ahead of them. He said it happened a few other times too. He could obviously be lying but there's no reason to offer that up.

Not surprising, there was a run on the high schoolers in the first 10 picks of the 3rd round.

First handful of reports on signing status are now up on our Tracker - just 5 or 6 so far. We should be getting a lot more in the next week.

Abbott and Mockbee have now both confirmed they are signing. Up to 17 of those reports now in the Tracker.

Abbott (the 8th rounder) is a mild surprise to sign that quick.
