typical KW draft pick.great athlete, looks fab in the uniform.

Only problem is he's not a baseball player.

Man, don't know who it was last year that looked awesome defensively and was hitting. Guess it was just an athlete.

He was productive his entire way up the ladder in the minors and was an above average SS last year despite only playing 99 games. Pretty impressive for someone that isn't a baseball player.

Small sample size, league has figured him out.

Whatever you do just don't throw him a strike .

He was productive in a sense in the minors

Alexei and Tim Anderson are so similar it isn't even funny. When Alexei got here, he had a ton of the same sorts of defensive problems with consistency and basic play execution.

At the plate, they are the same hitter.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jun 23, 2017 -> 11:57 AM)
Most of his defensive problems are just a lack of fundamental preparation, especially to his left where he rounds way too many balls off instead of putting the bill of his cap over his bellybutton and the ball. That's very correctable with time and experience.

Agreed. that's why the progression isn't linear and he just needs the time to continue to work on it. In relative baseball years, he is still a very inexperienced player.

This is a terrible post reeking of meatballism.

Tim Anderson's cool

He will certainly improve

Enjoyed this haiku?

I honk this thread is ridiculous. As someone said, you're worried about the team's young shortstop, who didn't start playing baseball till he was 17/18 in the first year of a rebuild?

I second this notion. People need to dial back on the impatience.

Anderson only just turned 24, he's just a kid. If he's able to hit around .250 so far in the big leagues, he's doing pretty well.

He is a super athlete with a high ceiling and his defense will get better with time. He needs a few years, which we have since we're rebuilding. If he is still the same two years from now, then I'll join the chorus of people with serious concerns.

I think there are legitimate concerns, not so much that he needs to be but today, but at least legitimate enough that the Sox need to make sure they have other options in the pipeline. Right now, they have 0 prospects in the minors that project to be even a replacement level SS in the majors. Its a major position of weakness in the system, and one of the hardest to fill.

Yeah, except that one Ks to the tune of ~26% of his PAs, whereas the other only K'ed >13% once.

Oh, and one has a contact rate of 70%, whereas the other had a contact rate well into the 80s.

One had a silver slugger to his name, whereas the other one ride a whopping Wrc+ of 95 to sucker KW into giving him a contract extension.

I see your points and counter with the fact that you hate everything.

I'll only add that Alexei was criminally underrated by Sox fans. We'll be extremely lucky if Anderson is as good.

Agreed 100%. If Anderson becomes Alexei, that isn't a bad player.

Yes, I agree. Alexei was mostly solid across the board defensively with flashes of being really good, he lost a step toward the end of his tenure here as age caught up with him, but he was a player that a lot of teams would have liked to have in his prime. Hopefully Anderson will make himself into frontline starter, but he has a long ways to go to catch the Missile.

Just to be clear, there is nothing wrong with the career of Alexei Ramirez as a whole. If we get that out of Tim Anderson, it is a win.

The comp comes from both players being extreme free swingers who weren't interested in walks, extremely athletic players with long limbs and long but quick swings who could make the spectacular play in one moment, yet blow the routine play in the next. Both have/had plus speed, and bad base running instincts. Both are medium power guys with mostly gap power, but the ability to run into 10-15 per season.

Can we lock this and have Ron remake it?

I'd be very happy if Anderson ended up having as good of a career as Alexei Ramirez. He was a quality player for us from 2009 to 2014.
