McCullers actually pitched worse than Darvish, he just got super lucky.

Excellent post. It's true.

Here's the "Astros save Houston from flood" narrative

Man you are cynical. It's a nice story. Houston was ravaged. Still is in many parts. I actually know a guy driving down there tomorrow from Wichita with friends, no lie, to do some volunteer rebuilding work. True story.

Now that was the type of game that is boring as all hell.

Agreed. The LA offense failed big time with so many LOB's. Houston set the tone right away and LA just couldn't take advantage of their opportunities.

Happy for the Astros, they did it the right way. Good drafting, good scouting, and timely trades. Looking forward to the Sox doing the same

Not taking the Quintana trade and using less pieces to get Verlander?

Yeah and Verlander dominated for them since coming over. The team won every game he started except game 6 of the world series.

Also, glad they didn't trade for Q since I prefer Eloy over Kyle Tucker.

Pretty cool to see Beltran get a trophy on the way out, and to see the emotions from him. That guy was damn good for a long time

Hey SI, how about a Sox champions in 2020 cover?

How do you pick white sox or braves though? ;)

Astros found so much value giving some players chance to figure it out at big league level that would have been marginalized on a competing club. Makes me want to not sign any position players, which was a preference anyway, but underscores it.

Yeah I don't think there really is any room to add position players. Even if they were to deal one of Abreu and Avi, there is still other guys in the minors we can give a chance.

Francisco Liriano, World Series Champion

Where is our Liriano?

Also, I even broke out my old Astros hat today.

Just read the SI Copy from 2014 is going for a few hundred dollars on ebay.

I think I just threw mine out in the last few months because my gf was complaining that I kept all my old SI's for no reason.

Boooooo

Darvish was tipping his pitches.

Yu Darvish may have been tipping his pitches in nightmare World Series performance

Glad to see the Astros win it all for the very first time (at somebody else's expense, NOT ours ;) ).

Remember, the Astros completely whiffed on two consecutive #1 overall draft picks (Appel, Aiken). This just proves that not all top prospects pan out. That's why you have to bulkload prospects during a rebuild (like Hahn is doing).

Appel was indeed a full out dud but Aiken turned into Bregman.

Exactly. Turned out good for them in the end.

As with the Cubs in November 2016, it now seems to be accepted wisdom on sports talk radio that nobody can realistically hope to compete with the Astros for the next 3, 4, 5 seasons. After all, they just won the World Series, and will bring back basically the same team. Pencil them in, since that's how it always works in baseball.

The cubs and Astros are a bit different though. The Astros still have a very healthy farm with both pitchers and position players to rely on in the future, the cubs farm is back to being a barren wasteland. This doesn't mean the Astros will win out year after year but they have a better chance than the cubs. Luhnow deserves alot of credit for the way he and his scouts built that team for now and the future.

Bet the house on it.
