Can he still go get the ball? I think defense is needed badly.

Then you want Engel, Pence has long been pretty poor.

agreed. With Engel's splits last year I am totally cool with that. Pence would strictly be for good hitting numbers and veteran Grit. Grindy.

Cool. Let's stick with Engel then and hope he has a hitting renaissance.

Unless... Mookie.

I think he's unlikely to be our 5th outfielder.

Nah, this is after Trout has announced his coming out of retirement come back party to help Eloy and Yoan have one last chance at winning a another WS.

This is a legacy move for Trout to put the Sox over the top for a 3-peat and secure his GOAT status.

Engel is too inconsistent with his mechanics to put a lot of weight into a relatively small sample size

For a backup OF available at low cost, you get a choice, do you want a defensive guy or do you want a decent bat? If you're looking for both...the guy isn't a cheap backup.

Considering the regular LF and RF won’t be considered gold glove candidates it probably is a good idea to have a good glove on the bench.

Sox still need a depth piece in the OF, as Eloy and Robert are huge injury risks. Relying on Engel and Garcia to back them up seems like a big risk to me.

100% agree.

Is it me or does Steve Stone come off as extremely condescending on Twitter?

I was just going to post this after reading his replies to people.  Wow.  It’s like he gets super pissed off if people don’t listen to his initial tweet on players and question him further.

1st Tweet thread:

The guy had it it coming.  Just wanted to continue to insist in wanting Stone to kiss Rose's ass.

2nd Tweet thread:

Another delusional idiot begging for an Arenado trade.

The guy in the first tweet just stated some facts about Pete Rose.  It was harmless.  The second tweet makes me think that Stone gets pissed if people question his insider knowledge of Sox moves.

Yeah I'm just being cheeky. I'm very optimistic about this organization and it's future. Fun times ahead!

Why not go for one who's sort of meh at both (Cameron Maybin perhaps)? I know Maybin had great hitting stats last year but it doesn't seem sustainable to me. He should easily be better with the bat than Engel, though. And while he's not a great defender, he has good range and is at least better than Mazara/Eloy

Stone's always been rough around the edges in fan interactions IMO. There are numerous stories throughout the years about him being a prick to people at Soxfest because he won't write his Cy Young inscription on there or flat out refusing to sign certain items (and I think he reacts this way because he truly believes every adult getting memorabilia of his is out to make a buck - which is absolutely not always the case). Guy can totally do what he wants, don't get me wrong, but he does seem to have a very short fuse and get annoyed quite easily. Some of his tweets could totally be taken as rude, but I've seen him have plenty of positive interactions as well. I think he's just a 72 year old with very strong convictions and doesn't want to bother with anyone that attempts to present an argument that conflicts with his beliefs. My dad is 71 and he's totally the same way at this point in his life, hahaha.

Not according to all the discussions going on in the Castellanos thread.

100% agree.  This desire for a bench full of specialists is crazy to me when we have a starting OF full of guys that get injured quite frequently.  Mazara has averaged 122 games over the past two seasons.  Eloy only played in 122 games last year and has battled injuries in both minor league seasons with us as well.  Robert was mostly healthy last year, but battled multiple injuries before that.

I do NOT want to rely on Adam Engel or Leury Garcia as an everyday starter if / when one of these guys goes down for a month.  Let’s add someone that is a bit more well rounded and won’t kill you if exposed to everyday at-bats.  Maybin would a huge upgrade over Engel in that sense and can still be used as defensive replacement in both corners.  Until one of the minor league OFs proves to be a depth option (hopefully Basabe does at some point next year), we need a better 4th OF than Adam Engel.

With Engel and Garcia we have ideal bench pieces but they have been over exposed to WS fans.  If they had been doing their thing for another team...many here would b extolling their virtues.

In this case the grass is greener because Engel sucks and Maybin is a passable bench outfielder

and if Engel played for another team we wouldn't know about him because he never would have come up.  So there would be no virtues to extol

You are entitled to your opinion.

Ideal bench players are guys who can play some defense and hit a bit.  Engel is all glove and no bat and Leury is mediocre at both and makes boneheaded defensive plays.  No fans of other teams are jealous for an Engel on their bench.  James McCann as a backup catcher?  Sure, but the rest of our bench is mostly mediocre to bad.
