Big series for the White Sox this weekend. Take 2/3 and you clinch the tiebreaker against the Rays. Take 1/3 and the tiebreaker falls to division records - the Rays currently have an advantage there, but the Rays will have more games to play against their division rivals upcoming. Get swept and the Rays clinch that tiebreaker, and move 7 games ahead in the standings on top of it. Sweep the Rays and the White Sox are 1 game out of the #1 seed with the tiebreaker in hand.

Thanks for doing this!

Potentially impacting the AL East and WC race:

Sundays MIN/NYY and TEX/BOS very unlikely to get played due to a hurricane approaching the NE. Not sure why they aren't doing doubleheaders today.

I just want to say I want the Yankees to miss the playoffs. Not because of them beating the Sox but to see that fanbase cry and cry in October

You are gonna have to settle for the other bitches missing the playoffs, the Red Sox

Just hoping they are peaking now and struggle come October and lose the WC game but yea Red Sox missing is nice too. I think I dislike that fanbase more anyway

You think Oakland will overtake Boston?

I do, after watching them against the Yankees last week I just think Boston is tripping hard

I count losing the play-in game as “missing the playoffs” too, so I’m still holding out hope for the Yankees suffering that fate.

Yankees on an 11 game winning streak fortified with LH power and an improved bullpen.  I think the road to to the AL pennant will have to go through NY.

I'd love to see Sale vs that lineup in a winner-take-all WC game.

IIRC the magic numbers will start to post soon right?

Its 28, and yes.

8/27 update:

Sox now hold a 9 game lead over Cleveland, 12.5 over Detroit, with a magic number of 27.

Tampa Bay has a 4 game lead over New York and 7 over Boston.

Houston now has a 5.5 game lead over Oakland.

Yankees now lead the Wild Card race by 3 games over Boston. Oakland is 2.5 games out of the 2nd WC spot, Seattle 3.5 out, Toronto is likely no longer going to be mentioned.

Tampa leads the playoff seeding race by 4 over Houston and 6 over the Sox.

In the NL, San Francisco's division lead over the Dodgers has edged back up to 2.5 games, and Cincinnati has taken a 2 game lead over San Diego for the 2nd WC spot.

This weekend:

Sox host Cubs

Cleveland hosts Red Sox

Houston at Texas

Tampa at Baltimore

Yankees at Oakland

Increasing the lead over Cleveland seems likely but drawing closer to the other division leaders probably not happening.

8/28:

Sox now hold a 10 game lead over Cleveland, 12.5 over Detroit, with a magic number of 25.

Tampa Bay has a 4 game lead over New York and 7 over Boston.

Houston now has a 6.5 game lead over Oakland and 7.5 over Seattle.

Yankees now lead the Wild Card race by 3 games over Boston. Oakland is 3.5 games out of the 2nd WC spot, Seattle 4.5 out.

Tampa leads the playoff seeding race by 4 over Houston and 6 over the Sox.

In the NL, San Francisco's division lead over the Dodgers is at 2.5 games, and Cincinnati has a 2 game lead over San Diego for the 2nd WC spot.

8/29:

Cleveland lost last night, so the Sox lead over Cleveland holds at 10 games, 12.5 over Detroit, with a magic number of 24.

Tampa Bay has a 5 game lead over New York and 7 over Boston.

Houston now has a 6.5 game lead over Oakland and 8.5 over Seattle.

Yankees now lead the Wild Card race by 2 games over Boston. Oakland is 3.5 games out of the 2nd WC spot, Seattle 5.5 out.

Tampa leads the playoff seeding race by 4 over Houston and 7 over the Sox. The #1 seed is pretty much out of reach now, so it's just a matter of trying to get past Houston to get home field in the ALDS.

In the NL, San Francisco's division lead over the Dodgers is at 2.5 games, and Cincinnati has a 2 game lead over San Diego for the 2nd WC spot.

Based on lineup construction, I’d say it’s more hoping than trying.

But whatever. Rest is good. Stay healthy.

8/30:

Magic number is 23

Cleveland came back from 4-0 down to beat Boston last night, so the Sox lead over Cleveland holds at 10 games.

Tampa Bay has a 6 game lead over New York and 8 over Boston.

Houston now has a 5.5 game lead over Oakland and 7.5 over Seattle.

Yankees now lead the Wild Card race by 2 games over Boston. Oakland is 2.5 games out of the 2nd WC spot, Seattle 4.5 out.

Tampa leads the playoff seeding race by 5 over Houston and 7 over the Sox.

In the NL, San Francisco's division lead over the Dodgers is at 2.5 games, and Cincinnati has a 1.5 game lead over San Diego for the 2nd WC spot.

Boston and Tampa play 7 times in next 10 days. Interesting to see how Sale will do in possibly 2 starts against Rays.

So in order to help themselves, the Red Sox also have to help the Yankees. That must be a bit torturous for their fans.

Postseason schedule was announced last week. AL goes first…Wildcard game on Tuesday. Division series starts Thursday, October 7. If the Sox end up in Houston, the two home games are Sunday and Monday, 10/10 and 10/11.
