I guess if Rodon gets and rejects the QO then I'd do it because the picks even out, but I don't like giving up draft picks. They're really valuable.

This team is competing, not rebuilding. To hell with worry about losing draft picks. Sign players to win now.

See, I don't always disagree with James: I agree 100% with this. Syndergaard and Verlander were extended QO's and they have a ton of risk as well. I believe Ed Rod was extended a QO as

I don’t see how it tracks that they are okay picking up a Kimbrel option in order to trade but they wouldn’t do same with Rodon even if they didn’t want to keep him.

Its a one year deal. Guys like Smyly were getting 11 last year on a lot less results the previous year. I don’t see an issue moving that.

Can’t trade Rodon until June if he accepts the QO without his consent.

Rodon was one of the best pitchers in baseball. Not enough innings but he was worth 5 fWAR. Are we just assuming that Kopech replicates that because I’m certainly not.

Rodon was awesome. But the Sox need someone that will be awesome in October more so than May and June. Does anyone feel confident that will happen with him?

And for Kopech, no...you have to look at him as a #4 and consider anything beyond that a bonus.

I've been saying since the Sox were eliminated that they need to work on acquiring a TOR starter or starter with TOR potential soon, and if you need to dangle Andrew Vaughn  towards that, then you consider that IMO.

How can he accpet the QO without his consent?

If Rodon accepts the QO, the Sox can’t trade Rodon until June unless he agrees to a trade.

I like Conforto but no way I give up a draft pick to sign him.

You've........seen...how this organization does in the draft, right?

Ah, so without his consent is modifying the trade, not the acceptance of the QO.

Confirmed players being extended a QO:

  • Nick Castellanos, Reds
  • Michael Conforto, Mets
  • Freddie Freeman, Braves
  • Robbie Ray, Blue Jays
  • Corey Seager, Dodgers
  • Marcus Semien, Blue Jays
  • Trevor Story, Rockies
  • Noah Syndergaard, Mets

Other players that could receive one:

  • Carlos Correa, Astros (will 100% get one)
  • Jon Gray, Rockies
  • Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers
  • Carlos Rodón, White Sox
  • Eduardo Rodriguez, Red Sox
  • Chris Taylor, Dodgers
  • Justin Verlander, Tigers

Less than three hours to go!  The longer this drags, the less convinced they will QO Rodon.

Yes, the idea is you can’t turn around and trade a guy who accepts the QO right away.  The power shifts to player, at least until mid-season.

Hahn already said at his presser that they want Rodon but will see how his market plays out. Doesn't sound like he will get the QO if that is indeed true, because I think he'd accept it.

I kind of read it the same way, but Hahn speaks lawyer so hard to be too certain about anything he says.

30 minutes to the deadline and not a word on Rodon yet…

I have a feeling half the board is going to riot in 15 minutes.

Whoops, I’m traveling through Indiana right now and didn’t realize I wasn’t on Central time.  Looks like we got another hour to go.

Wonder if they’ve been negotiating on a longer contract offer.

Hmm. How many teams have his full medical report? And that one doesn't seem interested.

Exactly.

Taylor getting a QO hurts as I can’t see him not accepting it.

The deadline has passed...End of the Rodon era it appears. Unless a long term contract is worked out.

I’d give it a few minutes.

Nah - they’ll bring him back with a bunch of incentive based items.
