That’s the only guy I could think of as well but I’m not really sure if he’s even that much of an upgrade. Maybe Dinelson Lamet?

I think he's a pure reliever at this point

  • Huge news...Kimbrel spotted near the Dodgers Spring Training complex.

  • Yes. Sox would forfeit like the 65th pick, the bonus pool amount associated and $500K in international space. They should be willing to do it though.  This offseason hasn't been a good one for

Lamet is basically a reliever now.

And a history of injuries. Sox need a reliable arm.

They're not going to trade Lamet right now, that's crazy...they have too many question marks in their rotation and bullpen to countenance that.

Makes sense for the Mets if they believe in him as a starting pitcher...and depends how much of the Hosmer contract they are willing to take on.

Gives the Padres salary relief...Voit to 1B and Dom Smith to DH.  LF would be a mix of Profar/Beaty depending on matchups.

Cuts the Padres rotation back down to five with Lamet, Gore and Weathers...eventually Morejon, providing depth.

Not so bold prediction, but I think Manaea is a member of the White Sox within the next 72 hours.

I suspect that many of you will be surprised at how little Hahn will have to give up to get Manaea. He's a one year rental and is a middle rotation pitcher.  I understand that there are allegedly several teams pursuing him, but have we heard any details of specific packages being offered?

Gavin Sheets and Jared Kelley

Wes Kath/Jake Burger

Vera/Romy Gonzalez

for Manaea, three packages thrown out there via internet speculation

The  3rd one is probably not happening.

Engel Romy Keuchel and $40M.

Steamer projects Manaea to have the 21st highest fWAR amongst all starting pitchers.  He is a very good SP but I think his lack of overpowering stuff with keep his price down some.  That being said, he certainly won’t be cheap.

completely agree.  He's an okay pitcher, hurt often and on a one year deal

I just don’t know if the juice is worth the squeeze. I am not even sure if Manaea would be in this playoff rotation. If Kopech is still pitching in October (fingers crossed) and Cease takes another slight step forward (I think he will), Manaea is our 5 starter in October. I’d certainly take him, but the price has to be right. Winning a bidding war for a guy that maybe makes us win the division by 10-12 games instead of 8-10 games isn’t worth ravaging our already very thin farm. Sheets straight up is probably the most id give, but I’d certain prefer to keep Sheets. Still prefer something like Kelly/Dalquist/Thompson + Adolfo + backend top 20 type.

The first might be OK if paired with an immediate extension. If not, forget it.

No to the other 2.

Inside info?

I think you might have mentioned that the Twins could beat any offer we would make. If I’m imagining that, then ignore this post, but my question is this:

Would the Twins even be willing to beat us with an offer? For only one year, it seems like they might prefer to just keep their prospects. Is Manaea really going to change the outcome of their season much?

I am sure Manaea would be.  I love Kopech as much as the top guy, but playoffs are a bullpen game and Kopech could be the second best reliever on our team.  For this year, he'd make a TON of sense to be out there in the playoffs. I am where you are regarding a package.  I'd love to be able to headline with Sheets +..  Would love to avoid Kath.

The Sox are not trading Gavin Sheets.

They have no one who can come close to replacing his production against right handed pitchers.  To trade him would create a hole in the lineup.  Plus, he's cheap and under control.

Vaughn?  Second worst hitter on the team against righties last year.  I'm sure he will improve, but so will Sheets.

Sox need more power hitting lefties, not fewer ones.

Vaughn will improve more than Sheets will because he had to play last year after making the jump straight from A ball. Sheets was given the luxury of making those improvements while moving through the minors at a normal pace. I even recall a time a couple years ago when people were calling Sheets a bust, and he was facing minor league pitching at that time.

So looking at the Bassitt & Gray trades as benchmarks, we’re probably looking at Manaea costing us a 45 FV or 40+ FV (if positional) prospect as the headliner along with a lesser secondary piece.  From my perspective, Montgomery, Colas, & Vera are much closer to being 45+ FV prospects and are too valuable to be the headliner.  That basically leaves Kath, Burger, Cespedes, Popeye, & maybe Ramos as possible headliners.  Sheets is the one major leaguer you could add to the mix as well.

If I had to guess, the Sox are trying to sell the A’s on one of Sheets or Burger as the main headliner while the A’s are still pushing for either better (Montgomery, Colas, & Vera) or younger (Kath, Popeye, Ramos) prospects.  Ultimately I don’t see the Sox caving on the big three and I don’t think they want to give up Cespedes or Popeye given their potential newd at the major league level in the near-term.  As such, I think we likely see one of Sheets, Burger, Kath, or Ramos paired with one of Thompson or Dalquist to get a deal done.

Yeah twins are definitely caught in between. But they’re paying Correa $35M this year, extended Buxton and have made other shorter term moves. I think (know) they’re still after another SP. Do think they prefer Montas to Manaea tho.
