Hopefully other teams without any emotional investment in Kimbrel's meltdowns are feeling this way too. Results i can see being dismissed, but I think his stuff being down is absolutely going to affect his trade value, right? how could it not?

He's going to be our 4th inning, we're getting blown out, try to stay in for two or three innings, guy.

  • I feel like the general consensus among other baseball fans is that Kimbrel's struggles were a combination of regression to the mean and him not pitching the 9th inning. What they didn't know is that

  • James might be correct, but I guarantee teams interested in him would have rather seen him at 96-97

This just isn't true though. ST results are entirely meaningless, but Kimbrel not being able to dominate bums with just his stuff, regardless of his control, is absolutely problematic.

It's not as if he was some veteran trying to work on something new today; he was showing the same issues he had shown all second half last year and none looked corrected. I agree it doesn't impact his projections for 2022, but I think it does tell a tale about whether or not his stuff has bounced back.

Also, calling a young players production who has never seen the big leagues meaningless also just isn't true. Young players more than anything else can show you things in spring-training. It's not just results driven, but regardless his approach and production certainly have meaning.

Something involving Kimbrel sucking and James? You'd think he would be in here like the Flash.

I actually like James, agree with him more than I disagree with him typically. It just so happens that when we disagree it seems to be more offensive than when I disagree with the rest of us idiots here.

As anyone knows, typically if I'm responding to your thoughts and etc, I have enough respect for them to go back and forth on the mindset.

I agree with James that ST is meaningless. I really disagree with them when it comes to how Kimbrel looked in general. Spring training is not about results, but it certainly is about approach and process.

Where's the eye roll emoji response when you need one.

Come on man, you hate Kimbrel and beef like crazy with James.  I ain’t trying to hate, but the two combined should be like the bat signal for you.

I honestly probably don't respond to 99% of James posts and he likely responds to me more than I do to him. Mostly because I don't disagree with him all that often.

You're a victim of the moment and some recency bias here. I respond to posts, not posters. If you look through my history I respond 95% of the time when I disagree and to almost anyone. People just get very bizarrely defensive when i did it to James.

Chitown a great example here. We been on the same page this offseason so in the boards eyes the beef is over. It's never beef for me, I'm just responding to posts regardless of who makes them.

Edit: I've also been spot on about kimbrel from day 1.

-_- or perhaps :stick this may be too much :finger:

I believe by May there won't be any room on the Kimbrel sucks bandwagon to hell.

I want him to be good to. I'd love to be wrong, but fact is he was a bad acquisition and an even worse contract pick up. We been hearing about kimbrel being on the move shortly for months. The market isn't there. Hahn blew it

If the plan was always to bank on some contender having their closer blow out their arm in spring it was a terrible strategy. People that thought kimbrel would net a viable mlb player were always crazy

He’s done - Koch done.

I believe the majority of moderators defended that trade (at least in the beginning) because 1) it's not their nature, at least most of them, to be OVERTLY anti-Hahn and 2) the polarizing nature of Nick Madrigal as a player.  There was at least a belief in the philosophy of creating a "super pen," if executed correctly, with the right pieces to fit together.

Perry Minasian (Angels GM) was on the radio program pre-game this afternoon arguing essentially for the same plan Rick Hahn is attempting (or WAS) with their bullpen, and especially the fact that starters were averaging 5 1/3 IP in 2021 and it was expected to be under 5 the first half of this season.

Of course, was Hahn "playing 4-D chess" knowing that the lockout would break the way it did, leading to an abbreviated spring training?

If he was, and had 3 offers of ANY kind out there for Kimbrel, he should have taken the best one before the value of Kimbrel dropped even further or he got injured.

(Arguably he's NOW worth more if he didn't pitch the entire season due to an injury and the Sox instead took the insurance payout, compared to having to recoup that money via another organization taking on his salary or partial salary in this case via the trade market.)

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/33538122/los-angeles-angels-adding-archie-bradley-ryan-tepera-bullpen

For example, they re-upped Raisel Iglesias, and signed Ryan Tepera and Archie Bradley, along with Aaron Loup...so a very similar offseason to the White Sox and also a Top 5-10 payroll team adopting a similar Hahn-ish philosophy.

Bradley is eager to team up with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani to provide part of what the Halos have lacked for years.

"When you look at what they've added, you really start to turn your head," Bradley said.

Tepera joins the Angels after spending last year with the Cubs and the White Sox.

Bradley and Tepera were among the top free-agent relievers available, and the Angels made good on Minasian's desire to bolster a bullpen that has let down this franchise repeatedly for years. Los Angeles' relievers were 24th in the majors with a 4.59 ERA last season.

Minasian added standout reliever Aaron Loup before the lockout, and he also re-signed closer Raisel Iglesias to a four-year, $58 million contract after his outstanding performance in 2021.

I said this aboit him when the Cubs signed him. Boston didn't trust him in the playoffs the year before.

He can take his stupid little wind up and GTFO

Yes the Sox shouldn't have picked up Kimbrels option but people are putting way too much importance in his first outing of the spring. He was throwing 94. So what? Hendriks was at 94 his first outing. I'd like to see them peak when the games count.  Not when it doesn't matter and they are working on mechanics. Spring Training stats are meaningless unless you are a fringe gut trying to make a team. And with how spring training went down this year, even less than the normal meaningless.

Yes.

It appears that Hahn gambled on Kimbrel having trade value and Rodon not being able to get a QO level deal. We know now that half that gamble didn't quite work out.
