Here's something I've come to figure out about the Sox FO.  They decide what they're willing to offer in a trade or free agent signing instead of offering what it takes to get the deal done.  They'll

  • if the sox ever blow past $100 million for a player it will absolutely be for one that is a DH.

Rick Hahn gets brownie points for giving it the ‘ol college try.

Funny I got hammered for that when we were sort of in on him and not Soto.  Scary to be thinking along with Rick Hahn.  That’s not a good thing usually.

Compare the number of pages in the respective threads.  Granted, the national story broke first with the Soto extension rejected whereas the possibility of Ohtani going is relatively recent.

So you want credit for the Sox having a seat at the table?  Ok Rick.

How much did the Sox FO slip to Heyman for this good PR?

If Hahn going after Ohtani sells a single extra ticket this year, sure!

They did the exact same thing with all the hype around acquiring Josh Peavy before it fell apart the first time.

Pay $500+ million for an extension or all of their prospect capital plus Robert, Vaughn or Kopech?

Who cares. There is no credit given for simply making an effort.

(not a knock on the story itself or @southsider2k5)

Why do the White Sox want to make sure it’s out there…with some extra supplemental details even?

Would Ohtani even sign an extension here? Seems like he wants to be on the west coast.

Who wouldn't be interested.

The offer was probably to sign Jon Jay and Yonder Alonso to minor league deals

I guarantee if you asked before this snippet came out, there'd be a few people here saying the White Sox based on the fact that they'd have to extend Ohtani.

But also, in lieu of that, the Rays.

The Sox tried to trade for Ohtani much in the same way I tried to get a date with a supermodel. There was never really any chance to begin with.

"Tried"

@HahnsKiddieTable

Where you at?

We had a trade offer for Ohtani

We had an offer for Machado

We had an offer for Wheeler

The list goes on and on….yet can’t land the big one….it’s the story of this GM and ownership

They should try again in the offseason.

Here's a fun one:

Would you trade Vaughn and Kopech for Shohei Ohtani (FA 2024).

I been on this train for years.

is it even really good pr? maybe they thought it was, but all it's done is opened up the floodgates for a sea of "seat at the table!" comments.

sox get more ink for guys they don't sign than anyone else in the league.

We tried for Otani, here is your Quintana.  Who throws a baseball in the majors, and that is about where the comparison ends with them.

I think this is great PR to the casual fans.

Probably not, he wasn’t interested last time he was a free agent

Still one of the most amazing sports stats of all-time. Maybe ever.

Flaming material to the fan that’s been paying even remote attention to anything he’s said the past 5 or so years
