But Harrison has been at least major league average for two months.

And plays above average defense and seems to be a solid leader/clubhouse guy…compared to the likes of Pollock or Grandal or Moncada.

Nobody would have counted on two consecutive Moncada game winners.

And guys like Engel and Jimenez had their chances as well.  You should never surrender two stolen bases and a lead like that when there’s such a high correlation between winning and scoring first (Guardians 48-17 in those situations this year…of course they have a large share of home comebacks as well, particularly against the Twins.)

Yes, Harrison has been fine the past few months.

If you're looking to bury somebody, how about Leury and his .512 OPS.  Andrus already appears to be an upgrade there.  

There’s no reason not to pick him up for a month. If he’s bad or complains about playing time, you just release him. Same money to the roster spot either way. It won’t end Sosa’s playing career to get optioned, but it could potentially help the team eke out an extra win, which is likely to be significant in this dumpster fire of a division race.

Basically.

My understanding is that whatever the Sox pay him will come out of what he's owed from Oakland... so a prorated portion of the league minimum is what the Sox would probably pay, and the prorated portion of league minimum is just subtracted from what Oakland pays him for the rest of the year.

Romy supposedly plays more defensive positions,  including the OF, so it makes sense to make him the new Leury.

He can sign with anyone in MLB.  Even if it isn't contractual dollars, he is going to want some reassurances on things like playing time.

Assuming he becomes the starting SS, until Anderson returns, where else would he get that opportunity? Are there any other contenders, that have a need at SS? There really aren't many competitive races, at this point.

That doesn't mean he isn't going to try for the best opportunity possible.  Even if it isn't with the Sox, the guy is playing for his next contract, not this one.

Andrus was also making as much in one year as Leury was in three, without including the vesting option.

Since he already has the money guaranteed on his contract with Oakland, money is probably a much less important factor than playing time and a chance to play for a team with realistic post season potential. If the following report is accurate and we compromise with an expected return date of the middle of September, that would mean that Andrus would get about a month of playing time: 'The earliest Anderson will return is the first week of September for a series against the Seattle Mariners. If he's sidelined for the full six weeks, he won't return until late September, when time is winding down in the regular season"

To you that makes sense.  If he can guarantee himself more money and a starting spot for the rest of the season elsewhere I could see him taking it

He could well be negotiating for playing time past when TA gets back.

non contenders aren't going to sign him , why even pick up a minimal expense. Most contenders are pretty set at SS. Andrus doesn't have many options. He'll get time now, and if he earns it, he can play 2B when TA gets back. Most other places, he's riding pine most of the time. Would probably start for a little while in Tampa, but once Franco gets back, he might get sent home.

True. In the NBA though, it is different. If you get waived, and another team signs you, you get your guarantee from the team that waived you, and what you signed for. A raise for sucking so much, a team would rather pay you not to be around.

Probably, Romy strikes out but has shown a pretty good approach at times. Sosas walk rate hasn’t sustained outside double a, not that it was high.

he's also a positive WAR player, Leury is a sunk cost and any move that doesn't recognize that is flawed. Not saying you weren't, just wanted to emphasize that Leury's salary and roster spot shouldn't be a concern here. I'd actually consider cutting Leury once Andrus is signed and TA is back.

This was in reference to the idea we should have brought Andrus in to play 2nd to start the year.

Hmmm I thought once you clear waivers that the team that releases you is on the hook for the entire contract.  But admittedly I don’t look into those rules very hard anymore

You’re good. The article on MLBTR even explains that Oakland would be on hook minus the league minimum paid by new team. The vesting option, however goes away.

Not worth it at this point. We have our established fourth and fifth stringers at SS.
