It's actually a huge boon for baseball because it will force out the owners who are unwilling to spend in order to compete. Kansas City, for example, spent 10-15 years protesting the Evil Empire Yankees....and finally did some things about it with two World Series titles in a row. I posted this in another comment. An economist did measure it. $337mil in 2022 (Japan and USA combined) though you should probably not consider his salary in the equation. How Much Revenue Does Shohei Ohtani Actually Generate? It probably increases playing in Los Angeles for a brand like the Dodgers. Of course, this is assuming he continues to pitch at a high level which is a big risk. Any investment is risky but it seems like a good one. Was execting $500-550 million after the pitching injury...this number is just shocking. It's almost like LIV trying to buy out the PGA...except it's one franchise. The Yankees/Red Sox don't even seem relevant in the face of this kind of move. (Yet everyone recalls the initial reaction in STL to Pujols leaving. Things don't always go as planned.) It will be interesting to see the financials of the deal when they get released but If most of money is deferred and doesn’t put a strain on the Dodgers luxury tax threshold giving them flexibility to bring in even more players then there is zero reason it is a terrible contract. Not even hating on teams anymore that do these things, just pissed we don’t have an owner that can’t understand in order to make money you gotta spend money.
