Track Record: Berroa bounced around before finding a home with the Mariners. He originally signed with the Twins for $200,000, was traded to the Giants at the 2019 deadline for reliever Sam Dyson and was traded again to the Mariners in 2022 for utilityman Donnie Walton. Berroa flourished under the Mariners’ instruction and dominated as a starter in 2022 before moving to the bullpen in 2023. He posted a 2.89 ERA in 43 appearances at Double-A Arkansas and made his major league debut with two scoreless appearances in Seattle.

Scouting Report: Berroa is short in stature at 5-foot-11, but he’s strong in his frame and has a big right arm. His potentially plus-plus fastball sits 96-97 mph, reaches 100 and explodes through the strike zone with late life and finish. His 86-89 mph slider has improved rapidly with the Mariners and is another potential plus-plus offering with hard, late downward break. He can both land his slider for called strikes or drop it below the zone for swings and misses over the top. Berroa previously had a firm, well-below average changeup, but he scrapped it with his move to relief. Berroa’s shortcoming is his control. He has a maximum-effort delivery that he struggles to repeat and is prone to spinning off the mound. He only throws strikes consistently in short bursts and has well below-average control.

The Future: Berroa has the stuff to be a setup man if he can improve his control even slightly. He’ll see the majors again in 2024.

BA Grade: 45/Medium

Track Record: DeLoach struggled to hit his first two seasons at Texas A&M before breaking out with Falmouth in the Cape Cod League. He started his junior year hot before the coronavirus pandemic ended the season, leading the Mariners to draft him 43rd overall. DeLoach steadily produced at each level before delivering his best season in 2023. He batted .286 and set career highs with 23 home runs, 88 RBIs and an .868 OPS at Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners added him to the 40-man roster in November.

Scouting Report: DeLoach is a steady player who does everything well if nothing spectacularly. He’s a patient hitter who identifies pitches well and rarely chases outside the strike zone. DeLoach added loft to his swing to hit for more power and saw his strikeouts spike as a result, but he has enough plate discipline and barrel feel to be an adequate, albeit fringy, hitter. He improved against lefties (.306, .905 OPS) to quiet concerns about being limited to a platoon. DeLoach’s power is fringy, but he knows which pitches to attack and has improved at getting the ball in the air. He crushes fastballs in particular. DeLoach is an average runner and has improved to be an average defender in the outfield. His below-average arm fits best in left field, but he can fill in at all three spots.

The Future: DeLoach’s lefthanded bat and ability to do a little bit of everything give him a chance to stick as a reserve outfielder. His major league debut should come in 2024.

Best trade of Getz’s career.  He peddled one year of success (and possibly an injured arm) for a nice return.

We might actually have a lefty RF power bat.  His strikeout rate isn’t very pretty though.

OK, I’m glad I didn’t bet over 62 1/2 wins yet.

Think this makes a Cease trade before OD more likely.

Looking forward to learning about the players they received.

Good rationalization by Getz.  You don’t need a good closer (and one with questionable arm health) for a team like this one that is going to lose a lot of games.

A platoon with Pillar in RF. Wouldn’t mind Phillips still making it over Sheets.

Does anyone think the Mariners were trying for a Cease and Santos package deal but they just settled on dealing Santos separately?

Love the return on Santos and getting a bigger draft pool is huge!

This is honestly a good deal for both sides. Sox could use a little extra cash in the draft and Berroa and DeLoach are not throw-ins. I really like Santos, but its hard to argue keeping a good reliever (who showed warning signs of injury) on a 100 loss team.

I’ve been thinking they will. No idea obviously but I’ve felt a 2 year deal at the start of ST so they can 60-day IL him right away.

Exactly what my first impression was. Interesting deal. I think the Sox weren’t too high on Gregory as a teammate.
