Bobby Witt Jr signs 11Y/$288M extension with KC

Featured Replies

Good for him. But wowza.

Since the Royals spent money and we seem to love all things Royals maybe....

....never mind.

So that just leaves Oakland and Sox as only teams to not sign anyone to a $100M+ deal?

Obviously not a good thing for the White Sox, but glad the Royals were able to do this.  I’m all for starts sticking with their original clubs long-term and not just immediately signing with the Yankees, Dodgers, etc. upon hitting free agency.

Ballsy

Yep. This is great for the Royals and great for Witt Junior. Dude is an awesome young player and fun as hell to watch.

Bad bad news for us White Sox fans, however. We are already discussing trading Dylan Cease instead of giving him a contract extension. The Louie Robert trade talks will pickup steam next offseason as well most likely.

Exactly.

Am I crazy to say a guy like Witt doesn’t deserve this much money?  He’s no Trout.  His walk to strikeout rate is pretty bad and his resulting OBP is poor as a result.

It is probably an overpay, but for a club like the Royals it's worth it. He'll be the face of the franchise for the next decade, their regular All Star, and the one guy that they can market.

Embarrassing for the Sox Twins Guardians.

It's like the Correa deal going sideways has now frozen their vision for the future.

Greg775 will flip out about a rising in parking and concession prices in KC.

Fits the positive vibes there with all the new stadium talk.

Let's not forget they lost 106 games last year...but are still acting like a team planning to contend this season.

Correct.

Royals
FA contract: Alex Gordon, OF (4/$72M, 2016)
Extension: Salvador Perez (4/$82M, 2021)

FA contract: Andrew Benintendi, OF (5/$75M, 2022)
Extension: Yoán Moncada, 3B (5/$70M, 2020

Athletics
FA contract: Billy Butler, 1B/DH (3/$30M, 2015)
Extension: Eric Chavez, 3B (6/$66M, 2004

Pirates
FA contract: Francisco Liriano, LHP (3/$39M, 2015)
Extension: Bryan Reynolds, OF (8/$106.75M, 2023)

Also gave KeBryan Hayes a significant extension.

Interestingly, Cubs have Carlos Zambrano at $91.5 million still as their biggest internal extension.

https://www.si.com/mlb/athletics/news/the-biggest-contract-as-owner-john-fisher-has-handed-out

Largest All Time Athletics contract: Eric Chavez $66M in 2004 (signed by prior ownership, about $100M inflation adjusted). The White Sox $75M Benintendi deal is dead last in terms of 2024 dollars.

Coco Crisp (2010-2016) was the highest paid player by John Fisher at $53.25M, though this was earned over multiple contracts.

Billy Butler ($30M) was the largest contract Fisher signed and honored. Yoenis Cespedes ($32M) and Khris Davis ($33.5M) signed larger contracts, but both were traded before the deals expired, and Khris’ contract was reduced by about 1/3 or $10.5M due to the 102 game owner lockout in 2020.

So that's only $213MM more guaranteed than the value of Benintendi's contract.

And the Benintendi deal is already looking like a major flop and one the Sox would love to get out of. It seems like Jerry's main focus is on getting a new stadium lined up. No major signings are happening on the South Side anytime soon.

And sadly these constant long term deal flops for the Sox is the reason Reinsdorf feels validated in not continue trying.

And these are for miniscule contracts compared to the rest of the league.

2036 is the year we get him.

There are opt outs and a club option which can land the deal anywhere between $148,777,777 and $377,777,777 depending on how long between 7-14 years Witt ultimately stays. $288.7M is guaranteed if Bobby doesn't opt out between seasons 7-9 of the deal, with an additional $89M available if the club exercises their club option after 2034.

Quote

The pact can be extend to 14 years via a three-year option, per Anne Rogers of MLB.com. Passan relays some more details in a full piece at ESPN, including that Witt can opt out of the contract after the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth years of the deal. The three-year option is worth $89MM, which would extend the deal to $377.7MM over 14 years if triggered.

What’s worse — the fact that you just mentioned or that the biggest contract the Sox have given out was to Benintendi?

This contract is going to be a big hamstring for the Royals...but Bobby's kids are SET for life. His on field performance hasn't warranted this payday, but the pedigree is there and interesting to see them put so many opt outs to make it all come together.

Is this the first Pre-Arb deal that hasn't had some type of hometown discount?

Part of me is really annoyed by this, the other part just thinks that even if we did sign a nine figure deal, it would just be awful like our eight figure deals... just bigger.

Tatis?

That was the biggest pre-arb deal in history at the time…right around where the Betts extension with the Dodgers was at…at least in terms of guaranteed contract dollars.
