Pirates now somehow have two deals bigger than Benintendi’s

On Friday, Mitch Keller and the Pirates agreed to a five-year deal that will ensure he will have that opportunity to bring playoff baseball back to Pittsburgh for years to come.

The deal will pay $77 million, making it the largest contract for a pitcher in franchise history. It’s the third time in less than 24 months that the team inked one of its foundational players to an extension, totaling over a quarter of a billion dollars guaranteed to Ke’Bryan Hayes, Bryan Reynolds and Keller.

Reynolds is 8 years, $106,750,00…and Hayes 8/$70 million.

And if O’Neil Cruz has the season predicted of him AND stays healthy at SS, he will be the next to be extended into the 2030’s.

I mean, who cares? Haven’t we already established that Jerry sucks?

Well, the people who care will have some say in the White Sox getting a new stadium.

Imagine JR announcing a $150 million extension for Dylan Cease, $250 million for Robert and $600 million committed towards the new stadium.

The mood around the fanbase and about the stadium project would change dramatically, OVERNIGHT.

For example, like one of the Dodgers’ principal owners (Todd Boehly) with Chelsea FC.  Reinsdorf would not even dream of signing more than 3-5 similar players because he’s more afraid of what can go wrong rather than dreaming of what could actually go right.  He is at the age where wealth preservation and risk mitigation supersede all other considerations.  Imagine even those lowly Rays being willing to reinvest $650 million of their own money back into new stadium efforts.  JR won’t publicly put in even a penny so far.

Since then under Boehly, Chelsea have handed out seven-year contracts seemingly for fun and paid more than €1 billion in transfer fees for 28 new players -- a previously unthinkable sum of money for a previously unthinkable number of acquisitions in an 18th-month span.

Harping on the lack of  a $100M contract is a bit on the form-over-substance side.

JR has  still spent in the upper quartile multiple times.  The Pirates' (and others') owners have not.
They did offer Wheeler over 100M.   And as clownish has Hahn's pursuit of Machado was, they did offer him over 100M (that dog and pony show said a lot more about Hahn than it did JR).

The problem has been the FO's poor use of resources provided.
While Getz is in the same lineage as KW and his sidekick Hahn, at least he doesn't have them looking over his shoulder.
Now if those resources have been permanently ratcheted down, that's another story.

Not for a team in a major market that was close to even with the Cubs until the late 90s.

Poor use of resources (Bennintendi), foolish trades (James Shields) terrible Draft selections (Carson Fulmer, Zach Collins, Nick Madrigal, Courtney Hawkins...) and  the last straw (for me at least) was letting Jake Burger go. Then the acquisition of over-the-hill veterans like Shields, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, Mazara, Grandal..

You can't complain about Owners failure to commit more resources when money is being thrown in the garbage can by management without anything to show for it. Owners are not worth billions because they just throw good money after bad money.  Good riddance to KW and Hahn. I wonder what the final straw was that caused them to be dismissed summarily with a brief notice advising them to clear out their desks and not return to the field.  We have not heard from those two since.

But you can still take issue on the restricted allocation of resources.

Yes he allowed their payroll to get in the upper end, BUT he made them do so by bargain shopping.

Think of it this way.  There is a budget for $1,000 household items and you have to go to stores to get all your items.

Instead of going to one store to get your important pieces, like buying a Fridge at Menards, and then the dollar store for the fridge magnets, J.R. made it be so that they bought everything at the dollar store.

The thing that makes no sense is blaming the fans for that poor allocation of resources...I mean there's got to be a middle course between having 6-7 $100+ million contracts like the Padres in?a small market and NEVER having a single one...ever.

I agree.  You need some higher commitment level contracts and for sure you need to do good on bargain shopping as well.  The strategy of trying to hit on all the bargain shopping has utterly failed.

Just think of the guys that “the money will be spent” went to.

Harper smokes all their value.

It doesn’t mean you should run out and sign a $300 million pitcher, but you should at least be in true play on the top end position players.  J.R. won’t try at those.

That isn’t the fans fault, that is his fault and his anti-players union pride.

Reinsdorf doesn’t get credit for offering Machado $100 million when there were poison pills in there and he had no intention of ever paying that money.  It’s as credible as any one of us offering Machado $100 million.

Same for Wheeler.  It’s easy to offer something that won’t be accepted.

I do actually think they tried for Wheeler, but they weren't willing to step up and declare "We are going to put the highest offer out for this guy".

There's lots of components about that. There's the team's hesitation to actually go out and buy guys that are really good fits. There's the fact that they blew $50 million on trash the offseason before that.

Exactly.  Let me know when JR actually approves and locks up a $100+ million dollar contract.  Yawn…

Remember all that matters to the buffoons is having a seat at the table!
