Of course there are success stories. The Griffey's, Fielder's, Molina bros. It just doesn't happen with the Sox lol.

It depends on the whole package involved from BOS and PHI.

Yes Mayer is ofcourse better than Miller but he has injury issues etc.

Crawford is a better 2nd piece than Montgomery.

I think that’s debatable

Don't forget Elijah Tatis.

Chris Getz.  Either the prospect, the player dev guy, or the GM is on line 2.

Offers would seem to be close though, no?

I personally think the Red Sox offer is quite a bit stronger unless the Phillies were to include other valuable pieces that the Red Sox aren’t. I’m probably higher on Montgomery than most though. I like him better than Crawford.

Do you think it is a a bit scary to go all in on a guy that young?

I would build this deal on two really solid guys who are ready to play on opening day.  Perhaps they are blocked because of the star players in front of them.  We desperately need players who make the team watchable.  Those big-name free agents get added when you are already good.  Those future star guys won't put a single fanny in a seat.

IMO if BOS actually offered either Campbell/Montgomery or Mayer/Montgomery I bet a deal would be done by now.

I suspect they are trying to see first if they can outbid NYY for Fried.

If I were to guess, I bet BOS is offering something like Abreu, Montgomery and Arias. Getz has said I don't want MLB players and I want one of your top 4 as the top piece and BOS is determining whether they will pay cash for a SP or prospects.

No, this shouldn't be the priority in a major deal like this.

While I wouldn't need guys ready to play on opening day, I also wouldn't love a package of 18 year olds if I could have my choice.  It'd be nice to get guys in AA.

At least then you can squint and see some type of core forming with two good AA prospects for Crochet, Montgomery, Quero, Schultz, Smith, Ramos... and then guys like Wolkow and Bonemer and others following a year or two later.

I could see that

I'd rather have Montgomery over Crawford pretty easily.  Tired of no-power hitters

Yeah, I agree with that. A lot of the guys we're talking about are like 20/21 and reached Double-A (besides Montgomery). At least the Red Sox and Phillies guys anyway.

I know Montgomery was drafted last year but was he injured? I see no stats for him.

Edit:

Aidan Miller, 20 years old, reached AA last season

Justin Crawford: turns 21 next month, reached AA last season

Marcelo Mayer: turns 22 in 3 days, reached AA last season

Kristian Campbell: 22, reached AAA last season

I'm mostly tired of people who can't hit .220 with or without power.

Yet, you're the biggest Nick Madrigal fan on the planet.

Ironically, Madrigal finished with a .221 AVG and 0 homeruns for the Cubs last year.  But he is a .274 career hitter at least.

His lifetime batting average is .274...sounds pretty good from what I've been seeing.

BA is not that important. For those of us not still stuck in the 50s and for those of us who dont spend most of our days yelling at kids to get off our lawn, OBP and SLG are better correlated with offensive production.

And .274 isn't super great anyway, it's like a 55 hitter....far from the Mr. 3000 t-shirts your boy was wearing.

Let's have him hit .315 to .320 a few years in a row and then we can talk.

A completely power empty .274 is pretty awful.  It's one thing if you are Steven Kwan or Luis Arraez and putting up a league leading average, but when you have zero power you have to bring a decently above average in something else to be useful.

I was a Madrigal fan, but he makes Robert and Moncada, and Eloy look like Cal Ripken.

Seems unnecessary

I did think Madrigal would be better than he was after his first two seasons with the Sox, but you could see the issues with his game immediately.  He was definitely not a very fast baserunner so it made you wonder how he was ever going to consistently beat out all those bunts, groundballs, and choppers for hits, since that was a large part of his offensive game — not striking out and making weak contact.

Quality, not quantity. I'd much rather two high quality guys than 4 borderline guys

Would be nice to see Fried sign somewhere that isn't Boston and Teoscar to sign with Boston ASAP.

Yes, please.  From your fingers to Getz’s ears.
