Later in 2025 season - Schultz and Hagen S. as MLB bullpen pieces

I don't think there's a rush. But let's be real these two are going to push the issue. Their stuff is good enough to punish minor league bats. Timetables change and I don't think late 2026 is realistic for those two in their minds.

I never said late 2026  I said the beginning of 2026 perhaps . That way you get the whole off-season to play with the roster and remaining options left and who you might want to trade . I'm hoping a lot of the arms are not so marginal.

  • I think Schultz makes big league starts in 2025

  • Bannister likes to give starters some exposure to mlb out of the bullpen when they have basically reached their innings limit a la Iriarte last year. They are not putting Schultz and Smith on the Sale

  • I think it's a terrible idea.

Your going to be dissappointed.

Yep, it will be a way to get experience with keeping the innings down. Just a few appearances similar to iriarte this year.

And this here is why I want them to start signing quality free agents now. As usual, if they’re going to start the clock on all but one of their top 7 prospects in 2025, the window to start competing again just got pulled forward.

Smith is experienced at pitching late into games, and is a much more polished pitcher than Schultz.   In a scenario where he progresses and destroys Charlotte for a couple of months, I would entertain the idea for a Hagen call up, but only after forcing the issue.  We don't need to Carlso Rodon him so he spends years at the MLB level learning how to pitch to MLB hitters.

Dutch still has so much conditioning and game situations to learn through the early part of his window should be mid to late 26.  He has literally never worked with starters stuff.  He has literally never thrown more than 68 pitches in a single outing since at least high school or summer leagues in 2022.  He didn't thrown any more than 64 pitches in a 2024 outing.  Learning to pitch to 100+ pitch outings is every bit as important as how many innings he throws.

Carlos Rodon was a normal Hahn callup. A guy who clearly hadn’t shown he was ready at any minor league level but who was called up based on prospect status to save a big league rotation. If we are talking about calling these guys up on April 15th, Rodon is the comp. Midseason, or later, if they’ve actually had a dozen strong starts? Very, very different.

agreed

I hope that late growth spurt doesn’t throw off Schulz, but seems like it could result in problematic mechanical issues to me

It's the reason why the farm is ranked as high as it is.  There's at least 5 guys not even in our top 30 who had good RP years in AA and AAA .Some older (26) like McGough and Schoenle .

I know the recycle bin is pretty full too so we'll see what happens .

It could happen with Schultz. Doubtful on Hagen Smith.

They can always get that time back.

He seemed to do pretty well while it was happening .Sometimes there is pain or other issues with late growth spurts  but it's probable he grew in the off-season and had no trouble with it in season.

I think ot does.

Both Tanner Scott and Jeff Hoffman are still free agents. They would improve the White Sox bullpen. Looks like the front office has no interest in signing either one or improving the team. This losing on purpose is terrible.

Is accidentally being historically bad any better?

Not just that but they’re viable flip candidates for the endless rebuilding cycle. They don’t cost anything other than money and are only “blocking” Justin Anderson from closing.

Neither guy will be coming here…

“Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports that free agent right-hander Jeff Hoffman is seeking a contract in the same range as the three-year, $38 million deal that Clay Holmes signed with the Mets.”

Ownership is just not spending that type of money this offseason

To be fair, guys have to want to come here.  I don’t see why Scott would unless you did something so stupid it negates a lot of his value.  Maybe there is a better chance with Hoffman because you tell him you’ll commit three to four months of starting without any risk of moving to the bullpen, but again, a better team might offer him the same.

Say...San Diego if they miss on Sasaki?

Already familiar/comfortable with NL West.

Or next offseason…or the one after that…

You really can’t wrap your head around the idea that paying market value for free agents when you are multiple years from competing is a bad idea as they will likely be bad when the rest of the team is good.

A team becomes better with better players. When JR bought the team he bought a bad team. He went out and signed Fisk and Luzinski.  Those signings made the team better. Now I realize he's not going to sign anybody decent. He wants  a low payroll.  If this team ever gets a new owner I would expect  he would sign some free agents for some big money just to let fans know that better days are coming. Also, has anybody noticed that JR has completely disappeared from the media? He's probably afraid to meet with the media and answer questions about the White Sox.

I mean, if people are so desperate for Reinsdorf to spend money, maybe hang outside of Alinea on the odd chance JR takes his family there for dinner, and they can watch.

If the Sox were "normal bad," this might make more sense. But since they went out and made themselves historically bad, it becomes a completely different scenario. They've dug such a deep hole for themselves that signing these players, while it would make the team marginally better in the very short term, would not get the team any closer to contention.

I mean if we want to get right down to it, the Sox signed Carlton Fisk and The Bull after a 90 loss season.  The Sox would have to improve 31 whole games to improve to the point where they were as bad as when the Sox signed Fisk and Bull.  In that year they moved up to a team that was 2 games over .500 when the strike happened, but make that an entire season, and they are 82-80, or 10 games better than they were the previous year.  Are a lot of people running out to buy tickets for this as a 111 loss team instead of a 121 loss team?
