Ishbia increasing minority stake in Sox

Yeah I don’t know about this. It doesn’t seem like Jerry is giving up control anytime soon based on everyone I’ve talked to. Ishbia has to have some assurances but I don’t think this moves quickly.

Counting on Jerry to honestly tell us his plan seems not likely.

To be honest, the dream is Ishbia coming in, building a beautiful new park at the 78, and having a couple mega free agents to supplement young core.  I love going to the Rate but it’s time for a new,

Ishbia is passing on the Twins to up his stake in the Sox based on conversations with Jerry.  There is some sort of plan in place which will become much clearer once he buys out the minority shareholders next week.

Yeah either something red flagged with the Twins or Jerry made him an offer he couldn't refuse.  This was not random

I think we'll get an an announcement if the board changes and Ishbia acquires majority share.

The most telling part to me is the 1.8 valuation. This could be about stadium funding as well, but also makes a lot of sense if the 1.8 point was where the share holders would be willing to sell out at for him to acquire control.

Time will tell.

If there is no Jerry shares trading hands, majority share still wouldn't include voting rights unless there was a back room deal involved.

Is there something worse than hell?

The Sox since 1980?

I don’t get this stadium angle.  If the minority owners are selling their shares to Ishbia, how does this help fund a stadium?

Correct.  The money goes to the people exiting the organization.

It’s just weird that this news was dropped in passing on a random Friday night. I feel like this should be a much bigger deal than it is and that the reactions would be way more positive if it really is happening. Perhaps the apathy of this fanbase right now plays a role in that.

I think things are mostly being kept on the hush until after the Feb 28th deadline.  Jerry doesn’t want any of his plans revealed until the rest of the shareholders are addressed.

I read he’s from Michigan but is based in Chicago so you might be onto something. He’s also not that old. But still, if I were him I would prefer to have this process done ASAP as opposed to being in a holding pattern for an indefinite period of time.

And we literally just had an Orioles sale get done that transferred control before the controlling family actually sold their shares.  There is a precedent here on how to construct a deal that allows an owner to effectively sell his team without incurring the major tax consequences that would happen prior to his death.  I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t be the outcome.  Beyond the obvious what’s in it for Ishbia, what does Jerry have to gain by controlling the team if he has an already agreed upon transaction pending his death?  Does he really want to oversee a rebuild if it has no bearing on his proceeds?

All of the shareholders are getting older and have different issues with estate planning. JR could simply be helping one of the shareholders in their transition by controlling who buys in.

There’s playing Devil’s Advocate and then there is this post.

This is the part that bothers/scares me. It could be another 15 years.

JR is 89. The man isn't living to 104.

But why would Ishbia pull out of his Twins pursuit just to cover some more minority shareholders spots? Seems like Ishbia is doing this to eventually land the big fish of majority ownership....

Or prior to 1980. Aside from ‘77, late 70’s were pretty bleak.

As other people in this thread have stated, what’s in it for Ishbia then? Why would he pass up on the Twins opportunity that would presumably allow him to take over quickly in favor of this where he could have to wait for years until Jerry dies? It just doesn’t make sense.

Eventually owning the team. I'm not saying 20 years. Less than 10. I was commenting on someone who said it was going to happen within a year.

From what people are saying it's probably more like 5-10.

For Ishiba to backout of the Twins pursuit, there HAS to be a spitshake agreement with the White Sox.

I can’t get excited until JR actually relinquishes control of the franchise, if and when that happens it will be one of the happiest days of my life.

That makes zero sense to me.  Ishbia simply isn’t going to wait that long to get his team.  No eventual owner has spent 9 to 14 years of time (he bought his initial shares of the Sox in 2021) to seize control of their target.  He was already in process of shifting over to the Twins prior to Jerry reaching out and making some sort of offer to him.

I can understand a few years but 10 plus doesn’t make sense. Not if he really was getting the Twins.

No way in hell is it that long.

I think we'll learn a lot when they announce plans for the stadium.

Yeah I wouldn’t say it’s definitive that he’s taking over immediately. Let’s wait for the details to come out.

Mr “you might as well just go to games and cheer on the players and give Jerry all your money” tray?

So it sounds like we have a chance to rid ourselves of JR sooner or later. Great information in this thread.
