02/26 - Sox vs Padres

Yes, I saw his first at-bat, although not much to take from that.  I also watched videos of him batting last year when we first traded for him.  His game is taking pitches and making contact…what have you seen so far that makes you think those skills won’t translate to the majors?

Tons of swings and miss and when he did make contact, it looked really weak

If somebody has the time you know what would be greatly appreciated? A thread every day by one of you that watches every game to summarize the things we want to know and not the propaganda of mlb.com.

Example: Thread title: Sox vs. Cubs (Feb. 27):

Things you should care about: Montgomery played 8 innings and was flawless in several opportunities on defense. He raced in the hole and threw out xxx; so and so pitched four innings and struck out 10 and was great; so and so played right field for the third game in a row and did xxxxx.

What I learned watching the game: So and so appears to be a lock to make the team; Vaughn looks lost at the plate. Etc.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

You are ignoring his entire minor league track record of plus bat to ball skills over six plate appearances to kick off spring training.  And yeah, he’s not a guy who will regularly impact the baseball when does he make contact…if you’re expecting that from him you will certainly be disappointed in his game.

Seemed to be pull happy...but grounders and not line drives.

Great, but we also need to 2 win players all over the place.

Replacement players would be a great start.

Sort of like a sports reporter who works for free.  Interesting.

Why have I not seen any highlights of Schultz?

I figured some people like to post things and would be willing to inform their friends what is going on with the team. But I forgot $$ rules the world in all instances I guess.

Does anyone watch these games on TV?

Why don't you do the first one? Or does Scrooge McDuck have to keep his money pool overflowing?

Wait wait wait wait whoa now, I don’t want to actually do the work MYSELF but if anyone else wants to detail everything I want to know, please do it thx

Also, let it be noted: Left-handed hitting Mike Tauchman his his HR off of the left-handed pitching Ryan Och.

His splits are pretty close to even. He doesn’t really need to be in a platoon.

Or I should at least say he’s not bad against lefties.

Looking at Benintendi, his splits also seem to be pretty much historically neutral. I sure hope Fuller sees something magical in Austin Slater to unlock.

Yeah, they kinda don’t need both Slater and Taylor. I guess you can DH Benintendi against lefties and play Slater in LF (depending on how the rest of the team looks). I know the platoon is in RF to start but that can change.

If only we had people who were experts in those areas who were willing to do it for free for us, right?

Okay, I guess my very pedestrian recap of yesterday's game (you can still cue it up and watch it on MLB.com) would be as follows:

1) We have 2 exciting pitching prospects in Schultz and Hagen Smith. Rodon comps are bouncing around for Hagen. Much smarter people than me have broken down their outings in this very string.
2) Sean Burke looked fine, as did Bryce Wilson. I'm not concerned about our starting pitching.
3) Steven Wilson threw a clean inning. If his DFA made the Cease trade look worse, this outing makes it look better.
4) Eric Adler is a guy who has some buzz as a future closer. I would have liked him to have not walked 2 batters to create the clutter that enabled Hackenberg's Folly in the 9th.
5) Concerning Burke, I would have liked him to put away Oscar Gonzalez in the 2nd, rather than an 11 pitch at-bat culminating in hard contact. But looking up Gonzalez, the Yankees took him off waivers from the Guardians during the 23-24 off-season, then the Padres signed him as a free agent this last November. Watching that at-bat, I'd think a guy like this should have been Getz's first priority over Austin Slater. Where are our scouts? Did this guy web-stalk some teammate's baby mama?
6) Tristan Gray, Andre Lipcius and Joey Gallo are here to hit. They didn't.
7) I'm kind of surprised at Gray and Jacob Gonzalez falling asleep on that 9th inning stolen base (Hackenberg's Folly). Bone-head play that Gonzalez should have been running laps for after the game. Fielding is Gonzo's carrying skill. If he can't even do that, he's toast.
8 ) I'm wondering how much weight last year's record has on this spring. Everybody says they've turned the page, etc. But plays like Lee's (I know errors happen, and it's early) just feel like they're pressing.
9) Meidroth - I have nothing to say. He's a baseball player; he looked like a baseball player in the field. He hit a high fastball to right field. I was told he can't hit the high stuff. Maybe that was someone else.
10) Circus Vargus. I want this guy to break out so bad. I want him to want to break out so bad.  Life comes at you fast. So do baseballs. I was up at 6:00 am this morning. I hope Vargas is, taking grounders this morning.
11) Please hit some baseballs.

Hackenberg didn’t mess up there. You’re supposed to throw the ball to 2B. That’s on Gonzalez (or whoever was at 2B if a righty was up, can’t remember).

Tristan Gray was the 2B. I know it wasn't Hackenberg's fault, but I believe he took the error on the play. It felt like the scene in Vacation where the camera pans the car trip, back seat, everyone's asleep, front seat, passenger, then Chevy Chase zonked out like a light.

Unless they all had the sign that they weren't going to throw down on a steal attempt with a guy on 3rd.

If that was on then hackenburg shouldn't have thrown it.

I don't know if that was the case but it's possible he is the one who missed the sign.

They had another play where the ball got away on a relay throw from the outfield allowing a runner to advance to second.

Was that when Smith was in?

And then he failed to hold the runner at second...but managed to strand him with K's anyway.

I believe that was Wilfred Veras' error that allowed the runner to take 2nd. Hagen Smith was the pitcher who allowed the runner to steal third.

Two errors or less per game would be nice to see...
