From a BA prospect chat

Pair of Sox on the hot sheet:

10. Braden Montgomery, OF, White Sox
  • Team: DoubleA Birmingham (Southern)
  • Age: 22
  • Why He’s Here: .500/.621/.864 (11-for-22), 7 R, 8 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 5 RBIs, 5 BB, 6 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Over his first 12 games with Double-A Birmingham, Montgomery hit just .239/.286/.326. However, this week against Pensacola, he turned things around in a big way. He collected hits in all six games, including four multi-hit efforts. He reached base in more than half his plate appearances, limited his strikeouts and looks like he might be turning a corner. Despite above-average production at every level, Montgomery’s season has been at times uneven, as he’s shown less game power than expected.

17. Tim Elko, 1B, White Sox
  • Team: Triple-A Charlotte (International)
  • Age: 26
  • Why He’s Here: .391/.462/1.087 (9-for-23) 6 R, 1 2B, 5 HR, 10 RBIs, 2 BB, 4 SO

The Scoop: Elko showed he could hit for power but didn’t hit for average or get on base in a brief 20-game stint with the White Sox. But in Triple-A, he’s been a terror for International League pitchers. Elko moved into second place in the IL in home runs this week with 24—one more than Samuel Basallo and Jose Rojas, and six behind Bob Seymour.

I see where Smith had himself a very good game:

Hagen Smith, LHP, Birmingham (CWS No. 5/MLB No. 92)
Getting the ball on his 22nd birthday, Smith turned in one of his best outings of the summer for the Double-A Barons. With his heater sitting consistently in the 93-96 mph range and his two-plane breaking ball devastating hitters, Smith finished with seven strikeouts across five frames with just one run allowed. He scattered two singles and two walks, with just four balls leaving the infield. The fifth overall pick in the 2024 Draft, Smith has had an uneven first full year (3.54 ERA, 40 walks in 59 IP) but hasn't allowed more than three runs in all 16 of his starts while holding opposing batters to a .167 average. His 34.1 strikeout rate leads all White Sox Minor Leaguers who have thrown at least 50 innings in 2025. Gameday

A positive Lip Man post

Im framing this.

Hagen Smith will pitch three or four complete games with ZERO walks before I see this again.

Zavala in August: .296/.408/.438 with 11 walks to 6Ks.

Jeral Perez in August: .400/.456/.643 with 8 walks to 7Ks, plus 4 HR (8 XBH total).

BMont in August: .358/.456/.552 with 10 walks and 10 doubles in 19 games.

Why are they announcing player for month of July at the end of August? More curious - awesome to see.

Had to wait for all the mail in ballots. 😁

Not ideal seeing Fajardo listed as Boston’s hottest pitching prospect. At the time that trade was a head scratcher. It has not aged well. For the Sox, Pipeline listed Oppor, no wait, McDougal, no, Peyton Pallette. A reliever. Don’t know what to make of that. I don’t think they’re paying much attention to the Sox system.

"For the fifth time in his past six starts, Low-A Salem starter Yhoiker Fajardo walked off the mound at the end of his start with zeroes on the scoreboard. Fajardo held Carolina scoreless for six innings on Sunday. Fajardo last allowed a run in his Aug. 8 start against Kannapolis, where he allowed two runs in three innings. Since July 10, he’s allowed just three runs in 38 innings over seven starts."

I know Bowden is a clown, but in his recently published Top 50 prospects, he has Braden at #21 overall with the highest hit tool grade I have seen for Braden so far at 55. I thought that was generally supposed to be his weakness with the high K rate as FG has it at 40 and Pipeline at 50, so it was nice to see the 55.

Here is the writeup:

21. Braden Montgomery, OF, Chicago White Sox (Double A)

Age: 22
Bats: B Throws: R
Height: 6-2 Weight: 220
Scouting Grades: HIT: 55 PWR: 60 RUN: 50 ARM: 65 FLD: 50

Montgomery is a complete player who will contribute with the bat and the glove. In the outfield, Montgomery is a sound defender with a right fielder’s arm. (He was a two-way player early in his college career.) Offensively, he’s going to hit for power and can steal a base, having fully recovered from the broken ankle he suffered during the 2024 NCAA Super Regionals. The switch-hitter has a great work ethic and feel for the game, as well as special leadership qualities. He was one of the headliners along with catcher Kyle Teel in the package the White Sox received for Garrett Crochet in the offseason trade with the Red Sox. He’s on a quick path to the majors and should arrive early next year.
