A LOT of GMs have come into complete disasters.  That's usually what opened the job in the first place.  None of them have ever managed to do what Chris Getz achieved last year, and a large chunk of i

There is absolutely, positively nothing absurd about it and if you feel otherwise then you have proven incapable of being rational on this matter.  Any GM who came in had to deal with an organization

  • Ask yourself iis there another MLB team that would hire Chris Getz to be its GM? I think the answer is no. Maybe I'm way wrong, but I really doubt it.

Merkin said he is meeting the team in Chicago, so I guess he is a bullpen piece?

Unless he has unlocked something weird, Vasil is a depth starter for Charlotte, right?

I don't think he can go to the minors.

Huh? He hasn’t been good in AAA. What are they thinking? They have 23 pitchers on the 40, plus 3 on the 60-day. At some point, they’re going to have to have position players. It’s in the rules.

Rule 5 pick so he’s making the majors.

So, their 13 man pitching staff will include 2 Rule 5 guys who cannot be sent down. This really is a tank year. I may be optimistic thinking they can win 51.

I guess in a tank year may as well see if they have anything. Since it's a claim it's minimal cost to return him. Bannister and Katz must see something. It will be interesting to see what it may be.

Vasil was the 9th ranked prospect per BA for the Mets last year before falling off.  Below is his report from BA:

Quote

BA Grade: 50/High

Track Record: Vasil scuffled through three years at Virginia but has emerged as one of the Mets’ top starting pitcher prospects since they drafted him in the eighth round in 2021. Bone spurs in his elbow truncated his 2022 full-season debut, but he made 26 starts in 2023 and logged a career-high 124 innings, most of them at Triple-A Syracuse. Vasil walked just 4% of batters with Double-A Binghamton, but that rate shot up near 12% at Triple-A, where the automated ball-strike system wreaked havoc with pitchers’ walk rates.

Scouting Report: Vasil has worked hard to turn himself from a pitcher who had a 4.74 ERA in 161 college innings to a four-pitch starter on the cusp of making his MLB debut. He came into the 2023 season in better shape and focused his attention on loading the back side of his delivery to throw harder and with more precision. Vasil pitches at 93-94 mph and tops near 95 with a four-seam fastball he uses to set up the rest of his repertoire. Like many pitchers contending with the ABS system at Triple-A, he had trouble registering called high strikes with the tight zone. Vasil’s mid-to-high-80s slider is his standout offering and grades as plus based on his ability to throw it for strikes or induce chases. He throws his slider both ahead and behind in the count. Vasil’s mid-80s changeup has developed into a trusty chase pitch he uses to try to put away batters. He will drop in an occasional low-80s curveball when ahead in the count.

The Future: Vasil’s ability to command all four pitch types to both sides of the plate helps him keep hitters guessing. He is a high-probability starter who might fit at no. 4 or 5 in a rotation. Vasil is poised to make his MLB debut in 2024.

Scouting Grades Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 45 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55

Vail is yet another guy who has a 4/5 starter ceiling and who just uses the fastball to set up the slider. I mean, it’s a low cost move, but he doesn’t have great stuff and walks a bunch of guys. Maybe they unlock something. When you’re tanking a year, you do stuff like this. I wish there was more upside though.

I think baseball rules require a team to score at least 1 run to win a game.  Maybe that has changed while I wasn't watching.

I agree, but why doesn’t playing younger players in the outfield than Tauchman and Slater apply then in a tank year?

This is the type of player that the Sox should be grabbing.

At some point in the future I’d love to get to see a list of “This guy played in the majors??”, just from this 2-4 year stretch of Sox ineptitude (who knows, it also may never end)

I like it. Especially 2 guys from 2 good organizations.

I mean why not? You never know. Maybe he turns into something maybe he's rubbish.....

That would be fine except you want at least a couple of veterans somewhere on the team. They picked those. It could have been anyone.

They signed them early so they are sunk costs. May as well keep them.

Why should it ? Who earned it ? Apparently you want them to set another loss record.

I'm confused. How do you claim a rule 5 player? Don't they have to be offered back to the team? Since they weren't, wouldn't we be able to send him down?

Not being facetious but does it even matter? What is the difference between losing 110 games or 125 games? Both are embarrassments, just a matter of degree... correct?

Another record probably costs Getz his job.

JR would be much happier with a relatively quiet 52-110.
