Colson Montgomery to AZ Complex

I actually think he was rushed in a lot of ways. '21 he played in 26 games in AZ. '22 he played in 96 games reaching AA for 14 games. '23 he played 64 games with only 37 games at AA. Last year was the most games he played at 130 all in AAA. To me, as a HS drafted player to only play 51 games at AA over 2 seasons seems like some development was skipped at those levels. Also, not all development is linear. Even this year, he has the horrid start, goes to AZ comes back and looks better. He then proceeds to get hit with a fastball on the knee cap and then a few days later gets hit in the hand. I know no one else really pointed anything out, so maybe it was just me, but it looked like his hand was still bothering him some up until recently. I thought I noticed him many times shaking has hand off after foul balls as if he was still in some discomfort.

It would def be nice if he could stop getting hit by pitches. It's not easy in season at any level to keep stopping and starting.

I agree. The one on the knee cap he had no chance to avoid.

He's prone to getting hit because he expands the zone down and in. Everyone tries to keep him from extending his arms and he goes fishing on a ton of breaking balls waaay out of the zone. He'll get hit less if he stops swinging at those cuz they'll have to change their approach to him.  Also, James has alluded to the fact that the balls in Charlotte may be dusty, so getting him outta there would probably help.

Dusty Balls. That’s definitely a contender for my next screen name.

Yeah, bonemer should be there.

He’s struggled for a while now, his numbers aren’t nearly as impressive as they had been.  But yeah, one hot week for Colson shouldn’t force him back in either.

Yep, he fell off quite a bit since the end of May.

With those long levers he's going to get jammed a lot until he proves he can rotate this hips open quickly and keep the ball fair in the air. Or at least get his body out of the way. Pitchers gotta do what they do neutralize strengths and you don't want him barreling it up with thos long arms extended. Some of the best HR hitters can kill you inside when they miss there spot . That HR Baldwin hit yesterday typical down and in breaking pitch off the plate both low and inside that he jumped all over. You pull that, get out in front of it while it's hanging there even in that location and you hit it a long way .     Also Colson will be seeing your typical sliders at his back foot, fastballs up and out of the zone and sliders & curves backdoor.

You're not giving the people who do this for a living much credit if you think it's because of " one hot week".

I'm on the same page. Let Colson sustain some success in AAA until after the ASB or trade deadline at least. Bring him up once you're confident he's injury-free and producing in a way that he can sustain in MLB.

I don't know why Baldwin isn't up yet, especially over Capra. All I can think of is they think Baldwin is in the Elko camp of AAAA players, but even that's better than Capra.

There's no reason for the talent evaluators on the Sox to be pinning AAAA labels on any productive minor leaguer since any player is capable of reaching unexpected heights. Sure pedigree counts but so does production.Slapping labels on players is much more of a fan thing than it is real talent evaluators who know that baseball talent  takes time to develop unlike a lot of instant success of more physical oriented sports like basketball and football. Fans have a difficult time separating their baseball prospect lack of patience with development from the other more instant prospect success sports.

Baseball coaches recognize your strengths but basically work with what the players have to improve upon to reach the next level. It's way more of changing sometimes very fundamental things that start in your head not your physical talent. It's way more about thinking the game and approach than it is finding mechanical flaws. But you need people who can combine the mental and physical to truly develop picks more consistently outside of the 1st round that separates good from bad systems.

That’s only really true if they are good at their jobs. Yet to be seen one way or the other.

If you actually think that I don't know what to tell you . We had plenty of people here giving strong reasons why calling him up isn't any kind of disaster. I'm sure the decision makers had discussions that covered more than hey he's swinging well and we're going into Coors against a bunch of righties.
