Is “The 78” Dead? Or even more alive? Fire announce plans for SSS

Today, we’re proud to announce our plans for a new, privately funded, soccer-specific stadium and entertainment district at Roosevelt and the river. We expect to open in Spring 2028. This new home for the Chicago Fire Football Club will anchor the city’s future 78th neighborhood and serve as a catalyst for job creation, economic development and vibrant community life.

Off topic question but why are most Soccer stadiums especially in Europe and now in America built with right angles in the corners copying the field, should be some curvature like American Football stadiums so fans don’t need neck surgery after a game as they have to be craning their necks quite a bit. That was one of the bad things about old Comiskey if you were sitting in the low boxes down by the foul poles.

Yeah I thought the owner of the 78 wanted two stadiums there? I don't think this particularly kills the Sox building there. I'm sure a lot of other things will, though.

Continues the trend of making Jerry look weak.

One of those slots is now hypothetically filled. Time to put up or shut up.

The developer has said in the past there's room for both stadiums at the 78.

Yeah I'm cautiously optimistic that this is actually GOOD news for us. It's like filling the first home or shop in a new development - once one person bites, it makes the whole thing viable and others get on board.

This will have the city/state fund the infrastructure that Jerry needs and gives the ownership team confidence that the whole region is going to be developed. They aren't left holding the bag hoping to fill the whole thing.

IMO it's definitely good news in regards to having two "anchor tenants" at the site, and the ask for infrastructure $ should be more palatable if/when the Sox do confirm now that the Fire are locked in, especially if they privately finance the stadium themselves (Sox).

Just getting out in front of it here as well, Sox are still "considering" the site.

Responding to an inquiry from WGN News, the White Sox said they’re still considering “The 78” as an option for a new ballpark.

“Related Midwest first approached the White Sox about building a new ballpark on a piece of property they were developing, and we continue to consider the site as an option,” a team spokesperson said in a statement. “We believe in Related Midwest’s vision for ‘The 78’ and remain confident the riverfront location could serve as a home to both teams.

“We continue to have conversations with Related Midwest about the site’s possibilities and opportunities.”

the Fire getting a ballpark village, water taxis, surrounding buildings going up... i mean, that is not happening without the Sox. i've been to Fire games and it's amazing support from a dedicated fanbase but that aint no anchor tenant

This is very reassuring. While there was room for 2, my worry was that with the Sox dragging their feet, maybe Related would say screw it and put the soccer stadium in the middle of the property and leave them out.

lets say there were two stadiums at the 78-- can they both face the skyline? I think one would block the other, right?  As parcel  is longer north/south than it is east/west

The soccer stadium isn't going to have a view of anything outside except the sky. It will be closed on every side with a canopy covering all the seats (at least, based on the rendering).

I read elsewhere that a new White Sox stadium at the 78 location would only cost $400 million. If that is accurate I would think it would be built there.

Most of the old stadiums in England were built as individual 'stands', or sides. And that allows them to expand by tearing down and rebuilding 1 side at a time.

Liverpool's Anfield is a great example of this:

Any new stadium is just copying that design for aesthetics.

we sure this means the state is helping foot the bill?

This probably puts a little pressure on the Sox to step up with some serious cash before all the land is scooped up by developers. At a minimum if they just sit around waiting on a handout they might find themselves short on options.

Yea based on this you would think the Fire will be the south anchor, as the skyline view is almost completely irrelevant, with the Sox (hopefully) being the north.

I think they might have meant it would only cost the state $400 million.
