They've said the plan is still to have him make all of his starts, though I imagine the leash gets shorter for them much like Crochet last year.

September 11, 2025Sep 11 5.2IP scoreless with 4 hits/Ks today for Smith. He threw 16 straight strikes in 3 ball counts before finally giving up his only walk in the 6th (helped by a borderline call going against him). Came back from 3-0 to get an out three times. 13 whiffs, velo up a smidge over his season averages despite continuing to add innings. Good stuff.

Loved when he was down 3-0 against Fedducia then threw 3 straight 4 seamers that were just stared at. Dialed up the fastball from 95 to 96 to 97. The third strike was just nasty.

September 24, 2025Sep 24 What a season for Shane Smith. Seeing his progress and development throughout the season has me very encouraged for the Sox and the current regime going forward. I think Smith has 2/3 starter upside and they found him in the rule five draft. They took someone else's scraps and turned them into a very valuable asset. Smith, along with Martin, has a secured spot in next year's rotation. He went for 140.1 IP, hopefully he's up to 175 IP+ in 2026. I know he did a lot of the work himself but this is a huge player development and pro scouting win for the Sox. They don't have too many of those, certainly not ones that are this successful. Going forward at least we know the team can find pitching anywhere.

Vasil and Gomez are prime examples of their ability to find/create/develop pitching. Injuries are irrelevant to a team’s ability to do either of those things.

Except Perez missed four months, injured twice...and Houser eventually led to Mead, who has been a net negative due to his lack of power at the corners. Fedde turned into a 1+ fWAR Vargas, but he still needs to be a 2-2.5 war infielder to provide any real value to a playoff caliber team.

I know you're trying to turn an innocuous statement into a net negative, but in the game of baseball, you need guys to stand on the mound and pitch. It works better if they don't hurt their necks watching home runs fly out of the park every three pitches. So, yeah, guys get injured, and every trade doesn't turn into Fernando Tatis Jr. That's why, as we've established, it's good that the White Sox can create pitching out of waiver wire claims and projects. The White Sox do well at picking projects off the waiver wire or signing meh starters cheap and getting meaningful innings out of them. Those guys have run the gamut from Houser's ace-like presence through the hit and miss nature of Perez and Civale to Bryce Wilson's ineffectiveness. Teams who can't develop pitching would have traded somebody meaningful to get a proven commodity. Edited September 25, 2025Sep 25 by WestEddy

September 25, 2025Sep 25 "Those guys have run the gamut from Houser's ace-like presence"... GM's watched what happened with Fedde and gave Chris Getz the major league equivalent of Jacob Gonzalez in Curtis Mead. You simply can't scout players going off prospect rankings or reports from 2-3 years ago. Of course, the Sox cut their scouting department down to the bone in every direction but internationally.
