Vargas to 10 Day IL, Elko up

Featured Replies

No surprise there. Only other possible option was Ramos. I still suspect Ramos > Mead, but we’ll have to see. I have very little belief that Elko can hit mlb pitching, but he seems like a good guy, so I will be rooting for him

Is Vargas the next chronically injured Cuban?

It’s not as if he was hurt stepping over the foul line. A huge man ran into him.

Not how those guys got injured.

Coulda been worse.

Just let Elko play

I am not convinced from what I have seen in mlb that Elko is more deserving than Ramos. Maybe Ramos is a Sept 1 call up and they both get some run.

Ramos is only 23 still but sporting just a 720s ops in Charlotte...like a 620s anywhere else.

Ramos was hurt in Spring. His second half has been much better. My issue with Elko is that he has massive holes in his swing that mlb pitchers will exploit. Ramos has a much sounder swing and is more versatile defensively.

Sure.  Doesn't matter.

He can't be any worse than Mead, and Vargas will be out awhile, so Ramos could get some rest over there.

And Mead stays?  Not even trying.

Good, Ramos isn't even a JAG. No standout traits. At least Vargas has shown some ability to be a decent regular.

Hopefully Vargas is actually healthy

Will Ramos even be on next years 40 man? my guess is absolutely not

Vargas 3B, Montgomery SS, Meidroth 2B , Sosa at 1B should be the starting infield for most games, IMO...

No Mead.

I don't think so either. Infield getting awfully crowded.

He won't be protected and wont get drafted either he's probably headed overseas or maybe he enjoys living in the US on his AAA salary for a few years. Seems like a fine guy just can't hit enough.

He's not eligible for Rule 5 unless I'm missing something. That was an issue a few years ago and they added him to the 40 man. I might think he still has options left and could be outrighted back to MILB without being designated for assignment. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd give the guy another year with the org, but if he needs to be DFA'd, just do it. Really like him, he's sort of grown up in the organization, learned English and did his, like, two MLB press appearances in English. Not judging players for not learning the language, but I think he tried really hard to ingratiate himself to the fans. It worked for me. I wish the Sox played him at SS, he's a good enough defender and the lack of bat becomes less of an issue. I think he still has some tools though.

He is out of options after this year. They could DFA him at the end of spring training if he doesn't make the team, or they might just want to clear him before the winter to have the 40-man space. There's about 2-3 guys on the 60-day IL they'll want to protect, and about 4 who will be Rule 5 eligible this winter, who at least deserve consideration for a protective roster spot.

Ramos did work hard, but he doesn't have the track record of acing each level like Sosa does. Ramos might be in the same boat as Fletcher, who had his big shot and couldn't take advantage. Guys like Meidroth, Teel and Quero did. It's good to say that the Sox might be moving up to the type of organization that doesn't have the luxury of waiting for guys like Ramos or Elko to take a year to figure things out.

Yup, no debate here.  Especially re: Sosa. I just really like the guy!!!

Why did they DFA Altavilla?

Ramos has had 119 major league plate appearances and turned 23 this year.
Seems a bit premature to dump him.
Also, he's only been up for 2 seasons; shouldn't he have an option?
