Crochet trade; almost a season later

Overall winner? I know its too soon to tell but Crochet is marching toward a Cy Young and Teel and Meidroth have been very solid. Braden Montgomery also showing potential at AA. Would you make this trade again?

While both teams are probably really happy, the White Sox got 4 players, three of which are contributing to the ML roster and the other is flying up the prospect rankings. Whenever you can trade 1 player you have no intentions to keep for 4 players who will be here for several years it’s a massive win.

Looks good for both teams, but who can really say? Crochet could get injured, Montgomery could bust, etc. All four players performing at the major league level would make it a big success...but Crochet is one of the best pitchers, if not the best, in the league for a while if he doesn't get hurt. I think as it stands, both teams got what they were looking for. I liked it at the time and still do. Really like Teel, but didn't love getting another catcher because Quero might end up a better hitter and neither guy looks like an elite defender/game caller. Plus Korey Lee is more than serviceable as a backup. I liked Mayer and obviously Anthony as the 'big' piece. Getting Anthony would've been a huge steal whereas Mayer probably would've been an overpay (Kyle is at .779 OPS in 205 PA, Mayer at .674 in 136 and keeps getting injured). I might've wanted Bleis too, but he's had a really tough year, .550 OPS at AA.

Getting Braden was awesome and I don't think Boston knew what they had with him. Still could bust, but I think he's going to show out like his brother from another mother, Colson. Wanted to draft him in the first place. His injury was overblown and I think we got a steal there. Meidroth and Gonzalez were basically just 'some guys' but really nice tertiary pieces. Meidroth has been up and down but has been better defensively than expected and still looks like a potential leadoff hitter. At worst, utility infielder who puts the ball in play and actually looks very good at both SS and 2B. tbh, I don't think it would have been crazy to send him down at some point or even start him at AAA next season depending on how spring training goes. His command of the strike zone hasn't been as good as advertised. Wikelman has also been pretty good in limited time. He's looked better in MLB than in the minors which is interesting. That seems true of several Sox players. I think he'll start striking more people out, his stuff looks good, but the walks are a little scary.

All in all, I like the trade and I'm happy Garrett is doing well!

I think so considering Crochet only works every 5th day. Imagine if they got 2 pitchers and 2 fielders instead?

It looks like a good trade form both sides.

Get'z trades look a lot better ever since he got more of his guys/outside hires into the org. Fuller, Bannister, all the analyst they've hired, Watson, Barfield.

Barfield is supposedly responsible for the Fletcher trade.  He suggested acquiring him to Getz.

That POV and determination a loss for an organization and fanbase going in. That’s like saying we’re losers. We suck, but we’re trying to make the best of it. Gaaaaaaa!

There was and is a ton of risk in Crochet's profile. The idea of trading him was a good one IMO. Of course, when the upside is as high as it clearly is for Crochet, you need to do well in the trade too. So far, I like how it looks. Teel looks like a long-term starter at catcher and is a player who is really easy to root for on top of it. Meidroth is having a solid season in the big leagues and looks like one of those guys who will be around for the long term as well — still some chance he becomes a high-end bench player, I think. As others have stated, Braden Montgomery is probably the highest upside player in the organization not named Luis Robert and he's putting up some numbers at AA that tell you he might not be that far away. Wikelman Gonzalez I am frankly not impressed with but getting something out of him would be a nice cherry on top.

Sox only had Crochet under contract for two seasons. So to break even, you need them over 6 to 7 years to combine for what are looking like 2 excellent seasons of Crochet. Of course, Sox would have had little use for a Cy Young caliber starter this year. And extending a pitcher with so little track record of success and so much track record of injury would have been a strange way to finally start spending big money on the team when it's not particularly close to competing. I think an investment of that kind only really makes sense for a position player with where the Sox are right now.

That being said, we should just make it clear up front that we aren’t keeping any superstars we might be lucky enough to bring up as our own prospects. Just tell us the truth, man.

Well that is certainly going to be the case under JR for his remaining years. When Ishbia takes over that could change.

What's not to like? Nasty stuff backed up by a 2 ERA. I don't think the expectation was that he would start, but looks like a solid reliever. I think the Ks will trend upward.

His WHIP is mediocre for a Cy Young candidate. A little luck involved?

Everyone you mentioned outside of Fuller has been around for the Cease, Santos, Mena, and Booser trades. They've let Robert's value atrophy to hell.

Those have all been bad (Santos and Mena may have aged poorly themselves, but at the time of trades, has much higher value.

Crochet and Slater are good. The rest are either washes or wait and see.

One thing to note is that Crochet is now a top of the rotation staring pitcher.  That has helped make the Red Sox a contender which they were not the previous seasons. As a White Sox fan, I would not have felt, with his injury history, that he would arrive to that spot so quickly. Since Boston had plenty of prospects, they were able to not touch their top 3 prospects and  still put a package that would interest the White Sox. So both teams got what they wanted but we will see if Crochet continues to be a #1 and if the White Sox end up with their prospects being valuable starters down the road.

He was an ace last year, what are you talking about about?

He was an "ace" last year for the White Sox but was limited by innings pitched due to health concerns.  This year he has a legit shot to be best starter in AL .He had a 3.58 ERA last year in 146 innings. He already has 178 innings this year with 2.67 ERA.  Crochet was not in the Top 10 starters last year for Cy Young. .

Obviously a positive trade for the Sox.  It was a fair deal when made; and so far it looks even better.

It was a better balance of perceived quality/quantity than, say, the Sale trade.  Sale had the high ranked prospects, but the other 2 pieces were weak.  This time, the prospects weren't ranked as high (but were ascending) and the 2 secondary players were both interesting.
