Helsley has just been miserable this year.  Doesn't mean he will be next year, but when you're this bad, I think trade offers are likely to be tepid next July.

I'll be surprised if they do. If they pick up Robert's option, I don't think there will be a lot of money to spend. Also, Williams? That's pretty risky. I also believe they will not sign anyone with a QO attached. They can't afford to surrender the draft capital. But they have surprised me before.

The two players being discussed are relief pitchers, one has a 4.98 ERA and -0.3 WAR and the other has a 5.60 ERA and -0.8 WAR. They're both 31-years-old.

If you were the owner, would you want your GM to sign either of those players to large contracts?

It seems since ASB this teams has hit more HR than all of last season.  I don't remember it being like this last year.

Let Vasil and Taylor fight it out for closer, spend money SP, OF, 1B or some combination.

My comment was based on the overall off season not specific to the two pitchers being discussed. 

ANYTHING Getz tries to do, regardless of position will be determined by what JR lets him do.

No reason not to allow him to try and prepare as a SP next year. The worst thing that happens is he's JAG we have another throw away season next year to find out. Hopefully it will be the last for awhile and we are ready to start competing again, but one step at a time.

He wanted to start when the Sox moved him to the bullpen as well. 

Point being, I don't think they see him as a starter, and I think several people have pointed to his mechanics as the reason. 

If they want to give the chance, great. But I don't think that is happening. 

Either way, I don't want them spending money on a high-priced FA closer.

I think they may have already ruled him out as a starter. Per a few people on here his mechanics won't stand up to a starters' workload. I really don't know. 

Point was that I don't want the Sox to spend much money on a closer until they are more competitive.

He's already said he's preparing as a starter over the offseason.

He's looked really good -- watch the games. I wouldn't let him start. Different situation than Crochet. More akin to Mason Miller. A proper closer is probably more useful than a 4th or 5th starter anyway.
