Vargas drawing interest

Where does it end?

Trade Vargas Sosa Quero and kick the can further down the road?

Taylor before he blows out his elbow?

We barely have a first wave of prospects that can fill out 3 positions at 2-3 fWAR or higher.

Montgomery's and Teel.  For now.

Assuming the draft pick is an advanced collegiate hitter, that's 4.

B.Carlson might be 3 1/2 to 4 years away, optimistically.

Someone in another thread wants to trade Robert and $10 million for god knows what FV player that will even get you...besides more debt.

it's obvious to me that they're building for 2030 instead of 2027

Oh, this is Scott Merkin taking fan questions, and weighing the pros and cons. Of course they have to listen. I'd assume that Teel, the two Montys and Shane Smith are the only untouchables at the moment. But for the way Vargas gets talked about as a clubhouse leader, and unrealized potential, I'd think they'd have to be blown away by a package to move him.

I'd trade Vargas at any time. He has a very long swing. Decent defense at 3B isn't going to change that. I'm not

saying he's a bum. He may have a season or two where he out peforms. I just can't see him being a core piece

on a good team.

I'd be surprised if Getz traded Vargas. Miguel is really a Getz type of player in my view and his big improvement is a feather in the cap for White Sox player development. Mead is an interesting piece but I wouldn't want to just hand him a starting spot at this point.

I don't see Vargas having the value to make him worth trading rn, to be honest.

I think these are both true in that Vargas probably means much more to the Sox than he would to another team.

That's a great way of saying it as well.  Looking around MLB, how many teams 3B or 1B situation is worse than Vargas?  How many of those teams would be willing to pay up to get him?  I can't imagine that list is very populated.

Looking back to confirm, Vargas ranked 16th of 18 qualified primary 3B's this year with his 1.3 fWAR.  The two that trailed were Minny and LAA.  Pushing it out to 400 PAs instead of qualified, Vargas sits at 22 of 28, with probably the Mets as the only team being represent as a potential playoff team for 26.  (others include LAA, STL-2, MN-2)

I'd move him if the price is right. I've never really considered Vargas as a player that will be here when this team is ready to compete.

Or at most, fine regular or backup 1B/3B.

I feel like Colson ends up at 3B longterm, with one of the middle infielders in the minors (with possible top pick at SS in 2026) at short.

I could see that. Vargas doesn't seem to have the bat for 1B, and his defense is too rough at 3B to stick there. Like you said, he's kind of a complementary player rather than a lineup fixture long-term.

I don't know how long Carlson would take to get here, but I have to imagine we are talking probably 2029 for a raw high school bat, even with his supposed gold glove type skills defensively.  Caleb Bonemer is probably more of a late 27 to early 28 track if he keeps going, so I don't think that is a worry in the near future, but could definitely see that happen in a couple of years.

If everything falls into place, which is highly unlikely because not every player 'makes it' - I would say the ideal outcome is Carlson at SS, Bonemer at 3B, and Montgomery in LF. But again, not all these guys are going to pan out, baseball doesn't work like that.

I also don’t see him vastly improving his trade value either. Dude is nothing special, especially if he’s relegated to playing 1B. If a team want to give you something, I’m inclined to take it.

That's also fair, but there is a decent chance that by the time Carlson is getting here and looking to establish himself, if Montgomery is still a thing, and pans out like he showed in his hot streak, he is looking at a $500 million contract very soon. At the very least, but the time Carlson gets here, he is decently into his arb years.

Hopefully Ishbia is 100% in charge so we don't need to worry about seeing Montgomery leave. If the Sox land the #1 pick in the lottery, Roch Cholowski is going to make all this moot.

I keep reading how good Vargas is defensively. He has a bounce throw to first base, because he can't consistently hit the first baseman in the chest. Sosa is even worse. Niether is going to the minors. Niether is going to ride the bench. Niether is going to suddenly be able to consistently field third or first. One or both will have to eventually go. Montgomery is the future third baseman. Get what you can for one of them now, and the other later.

He actually was much better defensively than advertised. He still isn’t the hitter Schriffen makes him out to be. He did have a glorious stretch, but per usual, regression to the mean occurred.
