White Sox sign Jarred Kelenic, non-roster invite

LaMond Pope got the memo, too. In today's Trib:

Chicago White Sox: Offseason additions — and areas to address

Kelenic leads off an "off season additions" piece. Nothing interesting, just recapping the off-season for people who don't follow the off-season.

“I’m looking forward to going out there and proving the player that I can be,” Kelenic said. “I’m looking forward to playing with another group of guys. I’ve been traded a couple of times. One of the cool things is you get to meet a whole different group of players and build so many more friendships. That’s definitely an exciting thing for me.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the guys, getting to know the organization and doing everything I can to help the team win.”

Build new friendships, to replace the old friendships...hmmm I wonder why he needs new friends?

I think this excerpt from Merkin’s article tells a lot.  I don’t think he’s your average NRI.

The left-handed hitter already has worked a few times with White Sox director of hitting Ryan Fuller, focusing on changes and adjustments Kelenic previously had in mind.

Because he works with coaching staff when his career is on the ropes?

It seems like Getz may have targeted him, if Fuller perhaps saw something he could fix and recommended him.

Oh? A swing adjustment? Do tell.

I’d say there’s been a lot of great teams with a lot of different personalities on them. A number of them aren’t the most conformist in the world, and certainly not Boy Scouts. Talent is what makes everything ok. If Kelenic was good, he’d just be considered quirky.

AJ comes to mind.

AJ also put a season 200 OPS points higher than Jarred before the Sox signed each, respectively.

I think Kelenic's immature, maybe on the spectrum, a bit, for the way he just doesn't know the perfect amount of athlete-speak. He's certainly not Milton Bradley. Kelenic entering his 4th organization may be a wake up call for him, if it hasn't been explicitly laid out in that way for him, to pull his s%*# together and have a career.

AJ rubbed guys the wrong way. In an interview way back, AJ once piped up about Aaron Rowand, mentioning that he likes to get drunk and aggressive when out on the town, and that's just not something anybody needs to be talking about in the media. The clip that got played here of Kelenic talking about how his teammate's child passed, that's just a thing where if you don't know how to address that with the utmost of respect, don't mention it. I believe he doesn't have that filter.

That, and he's a hot head who hurts himself throwing a tantrum, or he sulks.

You know he's made the team when the talk turns from he's an asshole to he's our asshole and just misunderstood.

Did you know Miguel Vargas made a swing adjustment at the end of April?

Since the offseason is the chance to dream, If the Sox fix him I will donate 25 dollars to a local Jeep dealership in loving memory of Ursula.

I heard those donations actually go straight to the White Sox Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting.

Doing everything he can to help the White Sox win is nice. And he will do that by playing in Charlotte.

That’s why I said talent is what makes it OK to be….whatever y’all are accusing Kelenic of being.

Correct 👍

If you are looking for the best chance at playing time this season....Jarred sure seemed to make the right pick with the White Sox.
