I think it's been bandied about in a few places that this move doesn't preclude a Canning signing. Fedde could certainly throw reasonable innings while Thorpe/Bush/Adams work their way back and Sandlin/McDougal/Schultz work towards a promotion. Canning might be on that same timetable.
February 10Feb 10 Great signing. Heard this guy was crushing in Japan. Smart move to take a chance on him.

Ha! Thanks for the mention. Nobody responded to my question about that phrase, so I’m going to assume it’s just a trendy phrase that caught on, similar to “I didn’t have that on my bingo card.” There’s a non zero chance I’ll use it at some point.

I don’t know how we juggle both on the 26 man roster though. There just isn’t any room for another major league deal for the pitching staff outside of theoretically another LH reliever. Feels like this was an either/or thing with Fedde or Canning.

I would have responded to your question, but honestly don’t know the answer. I just happen to use it quite a bit.
February 11Feb 11 Fedde, Hicks, Dominguez. Sounds like a 4-2 win, to me. Erick Fedde 2.0. pic.twitter.com/BcV9LNkuQZ — Chuck Garfien (@ChuckGarfien) February 11, 2026

Guess that depends on how Paez and Alberto look so can carry a lot of guys in ST and if those Rule 5 guys just dont make a great impression they both might be returned. Even if Paez is already in the Sox Top 15 prospects its extremely difficult to make the jump from A+ for either of those guys.

Those Rule 5 guys, if they show anything, are more important than Fedde, Hicks, etc. They need to keep them.

While you can succeed without being elite there, it's more rare and no one is succeeding below 3%! He also had the 2nd lowest K-Rate, all paired with the 12th worst hard hit rate in baseball. If they can get something out of Fedde again, I'll throw them a parade myself. He's in a small group of worst starters in baseball.

I meant in terms of perhaps getting Canning or making a trade for a young MLB ready arm not the retreads. There's giving guys runway like Acuna , I'm just not sure that runway includes the ability to keep 2 guys for a full season who last pitched in A+ . That's miles of runway.

He probably has to take a MILB deal if not for 2024.
February 11Feb 11 I think we can all agree that if his strikeouts don't go back up and his walks don't go back down, he's probably going to stink

This is a cheap roll of the dice that buys your young arms some time if needed.

February 12Feb 12 Mehh for that amount of $ he’s worth a shot to see if there’s any life left. I highly doubt it, but worst case he can eat innings as the long man out of the pen for a few months…someone’s going to have to do that job.

If Newcomb Hicks Dominguez and Leasure are the back end of the pen, plus the other lefties...
February 12Feb 12 if the Cardinals couldn't fix him I doubt the Sox can. Maybe he needs his Korean pitching coach.

Yeah it probably means only keeping 1 of the rule 5’s, but don’t know how realistic that both were going to make it anyway. Not going to pretend to have a strong opinion on either guy, but we’ll see if they push the issue of making the roster. In theory Taylor could be sent down to continue to work as a starter if both rule 5’s deserve a roster spot. If Fedde doesn’t grab the 5th spot I think it will be 1 of Newcomb, Vasil, or Hicks. I think the signing just (thankfully) eliminates the possibility of Cannon making the OD roster. 13 pitchers on the OD roster: Smith-Martin-Burke-Kay-? Fedde, Newcomb, Vasil, Hicks, Leasure, Taylor, Dominguez, 2nd Lefty, Rule 5 (Yes, Newcomb being the 5th starter would complicate all of that) Edited February 12Feb 12 by TheFutureIsNear
February 12Feb 12 I think the Sox will employ more than 5 starters by May 1. They have so many multi-inning guys that I can see Venable mixing and matching with guys like Fedde, Newcomb, and Vasil (or Paez if he makes the team) based on opponents and also to give extra rest to Kay (coming back from pitching once a week in Japan) and Shane Smith. So, I am not really that concerned with who the initial 5 are.
