Schriffen speaks...

I have watched enough games to form my own opinions and tune out announcers, especially old guys like Stone who repeat themselves ad nauseum. Hey, Andrew Vaughn was the best hitter in college. Really now?

Hawk and Harry were brash and entertaining, Bennetti was an insufferable nerd, and Schriff is a young man who is awkward at times. He tries too hard to please fans and critics. Some folks will never give him a fvking break. The announcer should not be an issue, at least for people who know and enjoy baseball and don't need to be entertained by a clown like Harry or be titillated with trivia or arcane side stories. Can Stone demonstrate his grip on a circle change again ?

100%

This team and organization have been insufferable and JS takes brunt of that. He has flaws but I enjoy the positivity/home run calls and enthusiasm......Because god knows this organization sucks that out of you.

Here's the thing. I think guys like Hawk were announcers first, and Sox fan's 2nd. Yes, they were going to try to promote things, and show things in a positive light, but they weren't going to insul

I'm sure he's a nice guy but that is about near the bottom in attributes for a good play by play guy.

A lot of people have already touched on many of the annoying things about this guy. When the score is 9-0 and the Sox hit a solo home run to finally get on the board me as a fan is like "Geez, finally they did something" where Schriffen is like over the top in your face beat my chest about it. There are very few things that deserve celebration when getting your ass kicked.

I like to learn about the game from the announcers. Hawk and Wimpy were great for that. Hawk and Don Drysdale were great, too. Not just the stories, but explaining why something happens. I get none of that from Schriffen. He doesn't even ask thoughtful questions. "Green light on 2 and 0?" is just inane.

With all the hate Schriff gets here, I certainly wanted to cut the guy some slack. I hate his cadence and that taunting tone. It's like acting. Don't "act". Let yourself feel the anger in a scene and be angry. I feel like Schriffen's trying to act excited instead of letting himself feel excited.

Agreed...........John has enthusiasm real or fake? Probably both at times, but he is not a baseball man. He is barely a professional. Besides his many mistakes his take seems to be that of a casual fan.

Time for Stone to roll away. He has become a caricature of himself. When Beckham feels like an improvement you know its gotten bad.

I cant stand Schriffen, but the Sox have been so comically bad I dont think angst is what missing from the broadcast. Watching a talented team go 81-81 is far more angstful, at this point it would just be beating a dead horse. The underlying problem is he just isnt a baseball guy

Over many years...I have NEVER tuned in or out of a game because of an announcer. I want to watch baseball, not listen to BS.

Some viewers just mute the broadcast or play the radio crew, but then you get a delay.

Stone Pony has to keep that gimmick up because he has been saying that Vaughn would break out every year he was with the Sox. Like you said, he also had to mention Vaughn’s Golden Spikes Award at least once per series. 🤣

What about Harry Caray and the Cubs ballgirl Marla?

There are a lot of players to study, not exclusively on the Sox major league roster but the entire league or at the very least the AL Central, but it's something you ought to do if it's your job to talk about it 162 times a year.

This was one of my criticisms of him in his first year and it doesn’t seem like he’s gotten any better.

He calls games like it’s our hometown heroes vs a bunch interchangeable nameless enemies who don’t deserve to be recognized. And if he does say something about an opposing player, it sounds like he’s reading straight from the intro section of their Wikipedia page.

Broadcasts are so much better when you can feel a little extra drama and a different energy based on who the opponent is.

When the Sox are playing the Marlins, I want it to feel like Sox vs Marlins, not Sox vs <insert opponent here>.

This is a solid breakout. The good ones have a healthy respect for talent, even if it is on the other team. There is nothing wrong with that at all. Again to me (and as someone who does this as a hobby since the early 1990s) it shows that you are being honest with the folks who took time to listen to what you have to say. It shows you have a respect for them, and your opponents, and most of all for the game being played.

I truly hope that they bring in someone worthy of the position after the contract expires. They tried something new, it hasn't really worked. Cut the cord and be done.

Just judging by some of these posts, Jason’s become a much better White Sox announcer since he left.

I would be surprised to see him go TBH. Loyalty seems to be the most important trait of a Sox employee.

I'd be shocked if he's back for 2027. I was told he was gone this year because the relationship with some others in the booth was untenable. I was very surprised when he was announced to return. He had a year left on his contract though. I know of multiple young broadcasters from other markets who were expecting to interview for the PBP job last offseason in anticipation of an opening.

Ah, I was wondering about that. There is definitely a TONE there at times.

Do you mean a sTONE? Can he get along with anyone regardless of who it is? I’m thinking it’s time for him to go as well.

We know Jerry doesn’t like cutting people loose with time remaining on their deals.

The Schriff-dawg only has one gear.

And it's "FULL STREAM AHEAD"

“Southside Samurai” is as bad as it gets. This is coming off last night, when he said we need Everson Pereira in the lineup. I felt like I had relationships with Hawk and Benetti. At the very least, I was entertained and learned something from them. I’m not sure what they are thinking with this experiment. It’s another thing that has alienated the die hards.

If you are right, the timing of this Merkin article is pretty sad…

Honestly, it's why a guy like Hawk with a million stories, or a guy like Jason who knows the right questions to ask, are so good at this.

Some announcers are meant for baseball…

Others are meant for SlamBall.

that got old quick but when a team is bad at baseball......

I couldn't imagine what we would hear mostly from the FCC if Piersal was around

Absolutely true. The closest I ever came to baseball was doing Idaho State and Big Sky softball. I reached out to Dave Wills (rest his soul) and Pat Hughes and both told me baseball is not like any other sport because of the amount of 'dead time.' Softball was the same way, I had to know the team and the opponent and get into what I called the 'news, notes, facts and factoids' in order to keep the broadcast going.

You parachute in carpetbagging, and the first thing you do is shame the locals. The wound is simply never going to heal. Especially while saying doofus stuff like Southside Samurai.

Instead, we get treasures "relationships" with Clevinger and McGuire.

In combination with Beckham, it's like scratches on a record listening for more than a minute or two.

The silver lining of a complete blowout like today is that Schriffen couldn't break out his taunting HR calls, or even the surprise Kung Fu yells he might have ready for the next South Side Samurai blast.

He got game: An avid hooper, he played in the 2013 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.

  • And according to ESPN, he's also been a practice player for the WNBA's Vegas Aces, where he lives.

5. Crossover: It's not just sports, he had a previous career in news reporting. First locally in D.C., then he moved to New York City and eventually landed with ABC News, contributing reports for "Good Morning America" and "Nightline."

The intrigue: Schriffen has a side hustle. On top of his busy broadcast schedule, he somehow found time to invent a new dog waste system called Poupé.
